  • The Word Lost A Uniting Voice on July 16, 2019 after his 4-year battle against pancreatic cancer. Known as the "White Zulu", Johnny was a South African song-writer, singer and activist. Johnny Clegg's story is significant. He made an indelible mark in the hearts of the people in South Africa.
He is often credited as a leading musical force that many credit in helping overcome apartheid on South Africa. Johnny is truly a Legacy Hero in so many ways beyond pancreatic cancer. This video brings back so many memories of Johnny Clegg when he attended the Seena Magowitz Foundation's 2018 Annual Fundraising Event in Boston. He was so instrumental in the fight against pancreatic cancer.

It does not exist a human word that can express more than thank you. If I could create it, I will do for you. White black metis indian, you make those men be brothers and free in South Africa with so much strength. And you are going on, that is great ! May your way be happy and peaceful, alive for now and then.

Johnny you inspired me since the Juluka time. I remember i bought a white track suit written Juluka in red on the sides of the pants and tops. You have set an example to all of us as South African on how we should treat each other. I will definately see you again John 5: 28, 29 if all south african can learn something out of this "Zulu White Legend" our country would be different on what it is today. You have made your mark.

"At dawn on the morning of the dance, an ox is slain by thumping a short knife into its shoulder. The longer it struggles to stay alive, paints the sky with crimson squirts of blood, the better. It is indicative of the strength of the community. Then the beast is chopped into pieces and the hefty slabs of meat are rolled in heaps of coarse salt and thrown onto the open fire for the pending feast." these are the pagan rituals Johnny sadly was involved in.

There are tears in my eyes as I write this. This man was an inspiration to me, as a white youth, growing up in the SA of the 80s. He showed that it clearly was possible to have integration and understanding across the race boundaries.

He found his way to the ears of many Afrikaans kids by way of a movie about a dog. It was only much later that I realized that Great Heart was the first crack in the wall of apartheid for me. The last time I cried about the death of a person I don't know was for Madiba. This feels like the same deep loss.

A great South African. I belonged to an organisation Natal Folk Music Association and in the 70's we gave Johnny and Sipho one of their first gigs at the Methodist Hall in Durban. I have loved them since then. The drummer Bokkie de Beer is my lifelong friend. We still talk often, him in Canada and me in various places around the world. Johnny's loss upset him terribly.

I first discovered Johnny Clegg in 1982. A few years back, I was at B.B. King’s in New York and saw that he was playing the following month. I immediately bought tickets. What an incredible show, one of the best I have ever seen. I loved his explanations of each song. The place was filled with folks from South Africa who couldn’t believe their luck at seeing him play such a small venue. RIP Johnny...

Mr Clegg's music, showmanship, humanity and spirit impressed me greatly when i first saw his music video for 'Scatterlings' in my teenage years. I have watched and listened to him from afar over the nearly 40years since and never lost that first great impression he bestowed upon me.
He was a real man of the world who showed many how to see beyond skin and look deep into the hearts of our fellow man and see how it could be easier to share our planet.
He will be remembered for many many years as an amazing musician, teacher of culture and great advocate for peace.
From one small Scatterling in this great world, to a Scatterling who returned home, you shall be sorely missed by many. R.I.P.

Wonderful to have my fellow South African perform for these fruit cakes who don't appreciate him!! In the end of the few minutes he was on stag did they check how amazing he is.
He still had so much energy. Thank you Johnny Clegg for all you did for us not just through your music but also fighting against apartheid. He's 20 yrs my senior. Incase you're all wondering what I did to help again the fight. I was just a kids in the middle. If you didn't like his music you were against the Blacks. At a young age of 12 yrs I became aware that the apartheid was wrong. Through Johnny's music helped.

I just recently remembered Johnny Clegg and wondered where he is now. And sadly I have learned that he died this year. I remember the first time I learned about him was when I was visiting Capetown in 1987. We arrived by sailboat (actually we were a bunch of tall ships on our way to Australia) and was invited to go to a concert for Johnny Clegg and Savuka. Never heard of him but concerts are fun, so I joined our crew. I was happily surprised at how great it was. And the whole band gained a new fan. I think that we were the only white people in the crowd. It was held at what seemed like the grounds of a school futbol yard. We were all on the ground, (it was not full) and they were on a makeshift stage. I never knew how famous he would be. May Eternal Light shine upon him.

I cant believe The White Zulu is gone. May his Crossing be joyful and his journey be guarded. His music gave to me a vision and understanding of a mutual nationality. I first "discovered" Johnny Clegg via a New Zealand TV show called "Radio with Pictures" in the mid-80s. The host said that despite South Africa being under a cultural boycott (so in theory she wasn't supposed to show any musicians from SA; especially white ones) she felt we needed to see this guy because he was fighting the system from within. The song was "Scatterlings of Africa" and it had a profound effect on me far away in NZ. He is a great South African and I wish him only the best in his new struggle. Go well Johnny

Greatly saddened to hear of the passing of one of my all-time favourite musicians and human rights advocates, Johnny Clegg, who lost his fight with pancreatic cancer on July 16, 2019.
I saw Johnny and his band Savuka perform live several times, and even had the unique opportunity to meet him briefly. He worked tirelessly to bring down the apartheid regime in South Africa and must have relished the performance he did when Nelson Mandela joined the band on stage some time after the fall of apartheid. Such a beautiful human being. He will be sorely missed by all those whose life he touched with his music and his soul. May the angels of love lift you up and may your family be consoled. We love you Johnny!

a man of substance, that embraced friendship, respect and joy, using music as a language. If we could all learn something from his music, and practice what he shared, we would gain more, and equip our lives better. RIP Johnny Clegg. A great tree has fallen, and the shade he gave, remains in us.

    Repose en paix.
