How to germinate pawpaw seeds
Seeds can either be purchased or obtained from ripe pawpaw fruits
For those obtained from fresh fruit, wash them , allow to drain water and store them in a cool dry place for 3 months
Soak them in warm water for 24 hours to break seed dormancy
You can then plant the seeds under a shed or in a tree nursery
For dwarf varieties , the seed will germinate after 2 to 3 weeks
For normal varities, you have to wait for 1-2 months
NEXT UP WE LOOK AT HOW TO TAKE CARE OF PAWPAW SEEDLINGS
TIPS ON HOW TO TAKE CARE OF PAWPAW SEEDLINGS
USE STERILIZED SOIL
PROTECT THE SEEDLINGS FROM DIRECT SUNLIGHT DURING THE FIRST 100 DAYS
GIVE THEM LIGHT
GRADUALLY INTRODUCE THEM TO SUNLIGHT
WATER REGULARLY
ENSURE WATER IS NOT WATERLOGGED
PLANT THE SEED WHERE THERE IS MANURE
ENSURE THERE ARE NO WEEDS
REDUCE TRANSPLANTING
Next we will look at how to transplant pawpaw plants
TRANSPLANTING PAWPAW PLANTS
DWARF PAWPAW VARIETIES ARE TRANSPLANTED AFTER 3 MONTHS
FOR NORMAL VARIETIES , WAIT UNTIL THEY ARE 6-7 MONTHS
BEFORE YOU TRANSPLANT , YOU NEED TO HARDEN
BEST TIME TO TRANSPLANT IS DURING THE RAINY SEASON
IF YOU DO IT DURING DRY SEASON , MULCH AND REDUCE NUMBER OF LEAVES
AVOID TRANSPLANTING TOO EARLY OR TOO LATE
WATER REGULARLY AFTER YOU TRANSPLANT
TRY NOT TO DISTURB ROOTS AS YOU TRANSPLANT
PREPARE LAND WELL BEFORE YOU TRANSPLANT
SPACE PLANTS 2.5 METRES APART
Next up we talk about how to care for a pawpaw sexes and pawpaw varieties available in the market
PAWPAW SEXES
MALE-ONLY PRODUCES POLLEN
FEMALE -ONLY PRODUCES FRUITS IF FERTILIZED
HERMAPHRODITE- HAS ABILITY TO SELF POLLINATE
COMMERCIAL DWARF VARITIES ONLY HAVE HERMAPHRODITE PLANTS
PAWPAW VARIETIES
THEY CAN GENERALLY BE GROUPED INTO NORMAl and dwarf varieties
Dwarf varieties include calina papaya IPB9,SUNRISE AND RED LADY
PAPAYA CAN ALSO BE CLASSIFIED BASED ON COLOUR OF FRUIT WHEN RIPE: ORANGE AND YELLOW
Next up we look at caring for pawpaw plants
CARING FOR PAWPAW PLANTS
Tips on how to care for your pawpaw plants:
1. use MANURE or FERTILIZER
INCASE YOUR ARE DOING IT COMMERCIALLY, DO A SOIL TEST TO ASCERTAIN WHICH NUTRIENTS ARE MISSING
APPLY PHOSPHATE RICH FERTILIZER WHEN TRANSPLANTING
TOP DRESS USING NITROGEN RICH FERTILIZER
BEFORE FRUITING, APPLY BORON AND POTASSIUM
2. IRRIGATE REGULARLY
FOR SEEDLINGS, IRRIGATE TWICE A WEEK
FOR MATURE PLANTS, ONCE A WEEK
3. REGULAR WEEDING
REGULAR WEED TO AVOID COMPETITION FOR NUTRIENTS
4 . IF YOU INTERCROP, PICK APPROPRIATE SHORT PLANTS
5. SPACE ACCORDINGLY
Next up we look at pests and diseases that affect pawpaws
PESTS THAT AFFECT PAWPAWS
1. WHITE FLIES
Is a type of aphid that sucks liquid from leaves
CONTROL
Remove and destroy all affected leaves
Spray insecticides
2.PEST THRIPS
Occurs during dry season
Attacks region around flowers
CONTROL
Use natural predators e.g beetles, lady bugs
Maintain cleanliness in the farm
PEST MITES
ATTACK LIVES CAUSING IT TO BECOME STIFF AND THICK
LEAVES BECOME BROWN AND DIE
CONTROL
Good sanitation
Use natural predators- poison mites
Insecticides are less effective
FRUIT FLIES
Cause fruit and flower loss
CONTROL
Use insecticides
NOW WE TALK ABOUT DISEASES THAT AFFECT PAWPAWS
DISEASES THAT AFFECT PAWPAWS
1. ROOT ROT
Occurs after rainy season
CONTROL
Maintain good drainage
2.BORON DEFICIENCY
Fruits and leaves fall off
CONTROL
Spray boron rich fertilizer
3. RINGSPOT VIRUS
Causes leaf distortion and irregular spots on leafs
CONTROL
Get rid of infected plants
Use insecticides
Use diseases resistant varieties
POWDERY MILDEW
White like mould on leaves and stems
Stunted leaves
Dropping of leaves
CONTROL
Use fungicides
NOW LETS LOOK AT HARVESTING PAWPAWS
HARVESTING PAWPAWS
Harvest pawpaws when they are 25 % yellow
How to harvest : hold fruit , twist it until it snaps or hold it and cut it with a sharp knife
Handle with care
Don’t expose ripe fruits to direct sunshine
Don’t stack them on top of each other
TRANSPORT PAWPAWS TO MARKET
Use hard plastic fruit crates with paper fillers
THE BUSINESS SIDE OF PAWPAW FARMING/ PAW PAW FARMING BUSINESS PLAN
BEFORE YOU DO PAWPAW FARMING, YOU NEED A BUSINESS PLAN THAT INCLUDES THE :

HOW MUCH FRUITS DOES ONE PAWPAW TREE PRODUCE IN A YEAR
COMMERCIAL DWARF VARIETIES PRODUCE 75-150 FUITS A YEAR

. appreciated
Super presentation
Great
Mine germinated after a week
Mind sharing the slides as pdf?
What about birds
If you take seeds from fruits, then both male plants & female plants came, it's ok for gardening purpose but not ok for agriculture😂😢
