West Coast 4: Santa Barbara & Monterey

- We woke up in Albuquerque and the weather was bad. The ceilings were low and the freezing level was below the minimum IFR altitudes for the mountain west. Considering our non-turbo charged plane, we decided the safest thing was to take an airline to LAX.
In Los Angeles we rented a convertible Mustang and started driving the Pacific Coast Highway north. Our first stop was in Santa Barbara where we stayed in a nice hotel, went onto the pier in the harbor for dinner and saw their old courthouse. Then we continued north to Avila Beach where I got stung by a bee and onto San Luis Obispo for Jaime to shoe shop. Finally, we drove up to Monterey for the night.
Next video we continue our trip north in California!

Sorry for those who haven’t seen an update in a while! I’ve posted it on some comment sections here and there.
Our place of employment is short staffed. We are forced to work 6 days a week and that made owning/operating a traveling plane very difficult. I decided instead of letting it rot away from disuse to sell it and get back in when they resolve the staffing issue or retire.
I’m trying hard to continue editing the content we had till I get chronologically caught up to the sale and then decide what we do with the channel. Unfortunately, it’s taking me longer than I had hoped. Maybe we’ll continue with aviation content or something different???
Thanks again to everyone for the support over the years!!! Y’all have been amazing! Still a hand full of 1BC era videos to come. 😀
Thanks for the update. Good to hear you guys are good and healthy during Covid.
Thanks for the update Kevin, a lot of us long time followers are glad to hear it. I hope you do keep the channel going, as you are able. I know this change for you guys hasn't been easy, but trust me when I tell you the 8 yrs. will go by fast and you both will be young enough to follow your dreams then. Best of luck to you guys no matter how things turn out with the channel.
Great to hear!! I know you'll make aviation great again!! I was going to say that you'd build back better, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it. 😂😂 ~Frank
*Bummer! Thanks for ALL the enjoyable flight-vids, over the years.*
Kevin, it must be tough right now. Not only is ATC facing shortages, but of course the ATP level airlines are also facing shortages, which I guess, in a way, makes your job harder, also. I'm sure that 1BC is in the best possible hands. I would assume that you developed some kind of a relationship with the new owner. I hope they keep you updated. My hope is that you won't discontinue your channel. Maybe we can see something like 'flying once a month to kee your hand in', in a tail dragger, or something like that.
Anyway, it must have been hard to sell 1BC, especially with all the work that went into her in the previous year before selling.
Editing, hey, you know, it gets done when it gets done. We aren't paying the bills for you, so we can wait until you're ready. Thanks for the update.
It's great to see you two having such fun, and enjoying your trip. Nice!
Kevin and Jaime, it is so good to see you again after a loooong dry spell. I am glad you are having good times and making the best out of unforgiving weather.
"Thanks", for taking us along and sharing your vacation with us all; have fun and stay safe!
Hi from your NYC Fanclub! You guys were my late father’s favorite CZcams channel (and mine)-he got his ticket in a Piper Cherokee 180 in 1968 at Westchester Country Airport. Thanks for taking him flying these past few years! ❤
This is pretty cool! Been following you guys for some time and to se you in my neck of the woods is cool 😎! The wife and I just did this trip last November down and up the coast but in our boat! Left Sacramento all the way down to Avalon, Catalina islands then back up. How ever we snagged a crab pot right north of San Louis Harbor and had to rescued by coast guard and towed in by Harbor patrol into San Louis harbor/Avala. What is cool is we were there and we’ve never been there and lived in ca. my whole life. We stoped at all the stops you made! And yeah it was very adventurous! I use to fly and seriously wish I STAYED WITH IT!!!!! You guys are an awesome coupe and very down to earth! ❤️ you guys. I’ve been married this month the 25th for 30 years! You remind me of my wife and I! You guys have the same, respect for each other and I believe this is the key to a successful marriage!! Very happy for you 2!! 😉♥️🍎
Hey Kevin great to see you guys having a good time. Enjoy life cause life isn't hanging around forever. Thanks mate
Several years ago I stayed that this same hotel and being for Phoenix, I got up in the morning, put on my shorts and T-shirt, and opened the door, and was shocked at how cold it was on a July Morning! Love your Videos, please don't stop Youtubing!
Thanks for the update, I will definitely keep following your channel. Totally understand, you guys did what you had to do. Love your channel. Godspeed.
"Fancy like Applebee's on a date night".....classic!
Friday's just are not the same Kevin & Jamie. Thanks for the trip. Hope all is well.
Awesome update!! Sorry you all are having to work so hard. Jamie you look so beautiful
Missed you guys! Was watching re-runs just to get my fix!
You guys are the best duo on CZcams !
Sweet finally on the West coast. Great video as usual!
Been waiting for a new video, great job .. glad y’all had a good time
Kev, gotta love her positivity you are so lucky that she keeps
your spirits on track. Glad our Double Eagle hospitality exceeded your expectations
Please take care of yourselves and we look forward to hearing from you. You created a special family out here in CZcams world. We care about you! Blessings,
Phil
Kevin and Jamie, it's so great to see you again. Sorry for the poor wx abq... Jamie, flip flops go with anything. Please keep the videos coming.... Love you guys.......
Dayyuuummm!!! I didn't recognize Jamie at first. Rockin' the bangs!!
Thanks for all the videos, aka travel documentation aka fun-to-watch episodes! Can't imagine what it means to sell your plane you and Jamie (plus kids) spent so many hours, exploring your part of the world. You will be back for sure. Who knows, 1BC might be coming back to you. Stay safe! Greetings from Germany.
Lmao at 12:36. So love this!!! Hope all is well with the family, miss your videos
Love the flying video's but this was so Fun and i really liked it!!! Thanks!!
Welcome to California. You two stopped and Shopped in SLO. I’m 20 minutes north of that. Nice ride up the 1. Yes you never know if your going to get a clear day or a fog day. Thanks for uploading new videos. Thanks for coming to California.
You guys are so cute together. You always make me laugh. Been to Santa Barbara a couple of times and had lunch at that restaurant on the pier. Great place and great view. Enjoy and thanks for the update on your situation. Staffing seems to be an issue everywhere these days.
Hi Guys, really missed your vids. Just wanted to reach out to see if you will be attending EAA Airventure this year, and possibly do a meet and greet somewhere on site! I always love that "little stroll" up to North 40 to see your plane and just kick back. Thank-you very much for always making yourselves available for all of us who follow you religiously! Keep 1BC in the air!
Good to see you posting once again...even though you no longer create live videos, as 1BC is no more. You and Jamie are special folks. Will miss the regular updates. Your background music floods me with memories. Hope you continue flying at some point in the future. Hey Kev...how about those Dawgs...national champs! Look forward to your next posting.
Thanks for taking us all on your Cavacation even if 1BC was partying alone in ABQ. Even with "Mustang hair" after 4 hours Jaime, you always look beautiful!
Beyond that coastal VFR fog, I'm only 6850mi away to the southwest
Santa Barbra is one of my favorite places to visit. Longboards is a great place. My fiancé and are getting married at the SB courthouse next month. Great video. Thank you.
Cool to see you both enjoying our area! SB is gorgeous. Shame I didn’t get to see your plane on the ramp, maybe next time!
Were all missing you Kevin, seems way back that we had regular films from you both . Hope your keeping well 🙏
So glad to see you. Was a bit worried. :-)
Great to see the updates and the rumors squashed. Hopefully with all the extra time at work, you guys can retire sooner and get back to flying. Thanks for releasing some of the stored content. Must be hard to edit given the situation. Wishing your family the best.
Looks like a great trip so far!
Welcome back guys
Thanks you guys for sharing you trip ,well enjoyed👍👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Spent 40 great years in SoCal and have been to all the places in your vid. Gave me little bits of remorse for ever leaving, but we all have to move on. It's great to see you two again and we all miss the regular Friday posts! Hope you and Jaime are enjoying life to the fullest.
You would not be how CA has gone down. Not the beautiful place you remember no matter where you lived. It is a shame. It was so beautiful from the 50’s thru 2000!
Man alive! The first thing I thought when I saw that Mustang was that Jaime would be driving it! Guess she knows how bad California traffic is. Anyway, we have missed your youtube videos. Certainly hope to see more!! Well, I've been reading the comments and sorry that you have sold your plane and work conditions are hard right now. You guys are too good to stop completely so will patiently wait for more great videos in the future.
You guys have a safe trip!
Fun video, Californiacation...new shoes = happy wife/happy life.
Great video. Made me realize I need to take another trip up the coast highway. I used to live near Santa Barbara and it is nothing like Santa Monica, as it's a 180-degree difference.
Totally get it, Kevin... I retired a couple of years ago during covid when I had the chance. They were working me to death! I use to watch your videos at lunch at work. Now, whenever lol. Hang in there with work hopefully, it gets better. I wouldn't worry about youtube. Family First! Thanks for the enjoyment over the years. I learned a lot about instruments, aviation, and aircraft with your channel. It's weird how the years pass and you think nothing of it until a life-changing event happens. I will watch up to selling the plane. Eric
Dang, selfishly, I want you to continue posting content. Your channel and adventures are so fun to watch. If you don’t continue, may I just say a BIG TYVM for all the fun you guys have shared. But I really hope you do keep posting something 🤓
Thanks for the update. You guys have influenced me over the year to get my pilots license, which I currently am looking to start doing. Its terrible that you guys have to work more because of staff shortages. Hopefully you will still produce more content for us from time to time.
Great video, BTW that was pretty good Jamie @ 11:25
Hello, Kevin and Jaime, drove through my Central Coast. Santa Barbara down town and beach with plenty of walk paths. In the center of S.B County, Santa Ynez, yep Hot... then I saw you cruising through Nipomo, plenty of great place to view. Your best stop, San Luis Obispo, SLO, down town shopping with plenty of old bars. I hope you both enjoyed my neighborhood, best of wishes... :)
I smiled when the notification lit up with a new 310 Pilot episode. My Dad was a Navy pilot and you guys were driving through our old stomping grounds. Driving the PCH brings back many memories from my time there at NAS Pt Mugu. While watching your video I had to take a phone call so I muted the video and put the closed caption on. I laughed my butt off with the translations. Try it! Can't wait to see another adventure.
Go DAWGS!
I served at Pt M back in 1958/59. Was really a fun base in those days.
Even when you’re grounded, you still give us a flying video… great job.
Grounded? What do you mean?
Not sure they are grounded. FAA still shows 1BC registered to Kevin.
@@dcarts5616 simply meaning… they parked 1BC because of weather and continued on their trip…
I have to say it's pure genius of Jamie to "forget" all of her shoes. It would be TERRIBLE if she had to go shopping in California for new shoes!
Too bad you didn't get to fly into Santa Barbara. It's a great airport and flying along the coast is spectacular. Looks like you all had a nice time.
Haha seeing this made me wish you guy's take some annual leave and visit down under.
We are relaxed and warm and the life is easy. Get yourselves to Australia and have some fun.
missed you both and am happy to see you again. Sorry to hear about the work situation. Hope it resolves soon or you make a ton of money, retire and fly again! Love your videos Tanks for sharing again! Jaime, you're as beautiful as ever!
I've been watching your channel for a few years now and have seen all your videos. I've never felt the need to comment on Jamie's obvious beauty before but after seeing this video, I'm sorry but I just couldn't not comment. Specifically the time index of 2:06 to 2:36. Absolutely stunning and totally off the charts. You're a very lucky man Kev. Also hoping to see a TBM as the new 1BC when work lets you get back to it. God bless you both.
This is your Nashville watcher that lived in CA from Monterey in Navy for 3 years to San Diego. Funny listening to you speak about CA. Totally different from your world in Chicago area. Beautiful area you covered but you missed Oh so much! Waiting to see what you show us if you are going on up to SF! Great to see you two having fun again! Don’t worry about flip flops in CA, you just looked normal!
Hair looking good Mrs Grumbles! 😜
"forgot my shoes"...Hmmm. Thanks for sharing parts of your lives with all of us. I hope you both realize how lucky you are to have each other. 310 Pilot sub for as long as it lives!
How fun to see the tourist thing in my home town through the eyes of a visitor. I am born and raised in Santa Barbara. You got a room right across from the beach and had food at the Harbor Restaurant. Great choices. I wish I knew you were in town so I could have shown you around.
LOL! Thanks for the great camera work at 8:45 Kevin!
Loved the Jaime (The Voice) Show!
Good video Kevin and Jaime
WB 310 Pilot I missed you both!
Hello from Minnesota! In the Marine Corps we had a saying Semper Gumby! always flexible. It's a bummer you couldn't continue flying 1BC but you made the best of it. Can't wait to see the rest of the episodes!
When I was a young lad with dreams of becoming a pilot for the majors, I learned at and used to fly from SMO (Santa Monica airport) where I was based to my favorite airport, Santa Barbara!! Loved the airport and city! Years later, I am just a prison nurse, but am now hoping my daughter goes to either ucla or UC Santa Barbara….
Us guys spend one third of Our Lives waiting on our wife but we do it because we love them and we have to. Glad y'all having fun.
We'll stick with ya, just keep on keep'n on!
My home town of “San Luis O’ Biscuit!”
Ya’ll driving back through
Avila Beach is awsome. My family loves that place. Been going there for years. As well as Pismo Beach and Morro Bay.
I live in Santa Barbara! welcome its cool to see you guys here visiting : )
The shoe shopping….. I feel your pain brother :) Reminds me of me with my wife. She refuses to take me to crafts stores after I spelled out “Help me” in glitter letters on the front display at Hobby Lobby….lol
I saw the bee crawling on your shirt, and I was yelling "Huge bee!! Huge bee!!!" But, apparently you couldn't hear me and the bee got annoyed. And, yes, Jamie, I know the words to every Jenny Nettles song ever recorded! LOL
Love it!
Wish I would have known you guys were coming to California. Would have loved to me you guys. Love your channel.
Glad to see you back!
You guys duplicated our honeymoon trip. My wife and I stayed in Avila Beach, shopped in San Luis Obispo, drove up through Big Sur, and stayed in Monterey. Thanks for the memory. Oh, and we also made the trip in our own Mustang convertible.
Bet you did the 17 mile drive!😀
You guys were certainly in my neck of the woods. My place is about a mile south of SBA in Goleta. And my kids both attend Cal Poly San Luis Obisbo. So, yeah were frequent flyers up and down 101 and Longboards on the pier. Good stuff.
Hi Kevin and Jamie,
Thank you for sharing your vacation. That area really looks nice.
Take care,
Be safe.
Nice car, Kevin and Jaime
Used to live in the Bay area, been up and down Hwy 1 on my motorcycle a few times. It's like a convertible, hot and cold along the ocean.
Oh Boy! No more 1bc videos? I have missed you both and am sad 1BC is gone. I agree with you not letting 1BC rot though. I hope you get back into flying, your a natural! Even if Jamie is a little nervous! LOL!!
The drive through Big Sir is a great drive in the right car, just avoid the summer, with everyone’s on it. Locals do know the good places, even if the atmosphere is not really nice. For me 30 years ago while in Albuquerque for work, the best Mexican was in a bowling alley down by the river.
Pretty cool you guys came to my neck of the woods.
Perfectly captures living in California - including amazing Mexican food from a gas station!!
that was a good video!
Wow guys, I sure hope you did more in Monterey. Maybe it will be on the next video, but if you didn't go the aquarium or Cannery Row and do the 17 mile drive you have got to go back. You could spend a whole week there and never see all of the beauty it has to offer. I really hope you didn't travel all that way just to miss out. Also, for a whole in the wall great sandwich shop and desserts try Compagno's Market & Deli. It's a little off the tourist beaten path, but well worth it.
Oh my gosh, finally!!!!!
Appears you guys ate dinner at Longboards on Stearns Warf!! Santa Barbara Shell Fish Company would have been a much better choice. LOVE that place at the very end of the pier. Right around the corner of where you guys stayed is Marina Beach Motel on Bath Street. One of the best motor lodges on the west coast!! That is a classic place to stay. Looking forward to the rest of your California visit in my state. Enjoy 🙂
love the shoe shopping
That was a good call. I lived NW of ABQ (FMN) for 3 years and you don't want to mess with spring or winter weather out there. For one thing, it's a radar black hole. I've seen snow coming down on the mesa AND rolling back into the clouds with nothing on radar. Not while flying of course. The last time I was in Santa Barbara the beaches had tents all over the place.
The summer fog of the central California coast is well known. It is persistent and the further north you travel from southern California the more you find. Mark Twain once said “The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco."
Interesting twist getting taking a commercial flight. Looks like you had fun.
Shoe shopping! I guess she's worth it! :)
I recognize all the places you went there in Santa Barbara (NOT Santa Monica!) lol. My aunt lives there and I try to visit when I can. Such a beautiful place.
Cali coastal fog is usually the result of valley heat. When it's hot in the valley, usually over 100, it's foggy on the coast til at least 11am then it usually clears. In Monterey there's everything to see, would take a week to see it all. 17 Mile drive is a must. Driving the coast of Pacific Grove and seeing the golf courses, deer, and tourists, ugh, too many tourists. A walk up and down Carmel main street is also a must, so many shops and restaurants. I could go on and on about what to see there but looks like you guys saw a bunch.
Welcome back, missed you guys😀👏
I think this video is from last year. The channel is awesome either way, wishing the best for them both.
I love the UGA in all your videos
The Monterey/ Carmel drive is one of the loveliest places I've ever been!
Rik
Lived in Cali off and on for 17 years. Oceanside to be exact while I was in the Marine Corps. The water is cold even in Southern California.hence the reason surfers often wear wet suits. Love Jaime's pronunciation of San Luis Obispo LOL.
I've been to LA twice. Traffic is horrible, prices are outrageous and I have no plans for going back. Enjoy you flying adventures.
Thumbs up for Jamie's bangs! WOW!
310 Adventures are awesome
What a sport model that gal be. Make that a super sporty model.
