LOL, the word "fort" came to my mind as soon as I saw all the blankets too LOL. It'll be a rough couple of months, I'm sure, but short term pain for the long term gain. It'll be well worth it, I have no doubt.
I'm pretty much the same as you when it comes to coffee. I used to drink it with cream and sugar, but went to black because I didn't want all that sugar in my diet. It really adds up if you sit down and think about how much sugar it is over a year. I recently went back to just cream in my coffee, and am enjoying it SO much more than I did with it black. I am a bit of a coffee snob, I must confess. It's hard for me to find ones that I like, and I don't think I could do it with the vacuum sealed cans. For long term storage, I'd get green coffee beans (probably not easy to source where you are though) and roast them in small batches. Green beans last forever, and I could have fresh coffee even when snowed in. See, told ya I was a bit of a coffee snob lol.
I am really enjoying these videos you do that show how you prep for being at home for long term. I would do the same just so I didn't have to go to town and deal with all the people. The older I get, the less and less I can tolerate even small groups of people. I figure I'll be a full blown hermit in about 10 years LOL.
That bear, or bears that are using your property as their highway is something that would be a concern to me though, and i hope I'm wrong. But with them being so comfortable with the area, and getting comfortable with the smell of a person and dog around, that just seems like a face to face meeting waiting to happen. Unfortunately, once a bear is used to going somewhere, and the smell of people and dogs, I understand there will be little to deter them. I am no expert on bears though, so just do what you feel is right for you!
I can really see the excitment in your face in this video, especially when you talk about the renos that are about to (and likely already have now) start. Keep an eye on the crew doing the work when you have time to watch. You'll pick up a lot of tips and tricks that you'll be able to use in your own projects.
I know I have no vote, but I'm going to cast it anyways. Yes to chickens and even bigger yes to the ducks! You will not believe the personality that a duck has compaired to a chicken, they are so much fun to watch and interact with. I had 4 Indian Runner ducks for a while, and they were SO much fun to watch. It would always bring a smile to your face. Chickens are great too though. I had one that bonded with me, and would run up to me every time I came into the pen. If it's something you feel fits with your life up there, you can't go wrong with chickens and ducks. Of course, they're darn tasty too.
Oh boy, this comment got a tad bit lengthy. Sorry about that, I hope it wasn't a pain to read. Hopefully you're reading it when you were looking for some entertainment lol. I hope you're having a wonderful day, and are snuggled up with your pup :)

Colin! Thank you for the comment! Love it! And now I am going to respond to all of it, so its going to be lengthy ok 😁
I used to be a coffee snob myself! You would have never seen a tub of Foldgers in my kitchen! I was never really keen on flavored coffee just wanted a rich coffee taste. The coffee creams that are sugary ruin the coffee taste in my opinion. Taste great but not like coffee. I spent a long time trying to figure out why I wasn’t enjoying coffee. And it was the sugar. Which is odd because I would sometimes get Starbucks twice a day! 😳And we are talking sweet! Extra Carmel upside down caramel macchiato with double shot of espresso. Um yeah! Probably spent enough on Starbucks to buy a tractor. As I started practicing to live in Alaska, I started making my own coffee with cream and sugar. Then just cream. Then I had to figure which cream would be able to freeze. Foldgers was more of a reality check with if I’m going to need 6-8 months worth of coffee I better drop down a few snob notches. Green coffee beans I may get just to have as backup!
As I was practicing my food preps for Alaska (in Colorado) I bought a lot of food and meats. Not as many kids living with me so I had a full room to store stuff including a basement. But as I needed to go back to the store and pick up a little more of this and that, I realized, I hated it! It’s strange now. I can see three people in a store and complain (under my breath) about “the crowds” or three cars being “traffic”🤣
Previous owners said they never had a “problem” with bears because they had a dog(s). They would just walk through quickly. I do plan on getting a fence (electrified with solar) built around my cabin. That way I have a buffer zone and Kenai can go outside untethered.
I have been watching the 2-3 guys working on my roof and am picking up some tips and tricks. The roofer guy I hired does seem to know his roofing skills REALLY well. Just one of those guys that can figure out anything roofing. And is ultimately concerned about the integrity of the roof and his reputation. But I am taking notes and pictures. Some for CZcams but some have the roofers asking “Why are you taking a picture of that! 🤣
As for chickens and ducks. I will most likely raise both and also quail. But I have to be able to get to their coops so a tractor will be needed (for winter). I only say I haven’t decided (I think) because I’m not sure when I can do it. Looking into a pole barn. Just want to raise small farm animals like the birds and maybe rabbits And of course supplementing with hunting.
Thanks for the comment Colin! I pinned it so its always the first comment in the section! 😁

I am retired and living alone in a remote part of Northern California. We have 545 residents, so there are more people here than you have there in Alaska. I drove here from Delaware with my little dog and love my quiet solitude. Most people don't get it, but I know you do. You have planned well and survived your first winter there, so CONGRATULATIONS! I live in an rv, so space is limited but I have adapted. I wanted to live tiny in my senior years, because I did not want to be a slave to my home, either financially or physically. I enjoy the peace of living in the forest and communing with nature. There is so much beauty around me and each of my windows has a beautiful view. I think you are going to be successful in your new life, and the change in your lifestyle and location will benefit your mental and physical health greatly. I make shopping trips monthly, and only once, so far, have run out of my dog's favorite treats. Will try to stay 2 months ahead in pet treats from now on, lol. I am really looking forward to seeing the changes you make to your home. To me, your life is very exciting and you are an exceptional woman to take on this big change,so enthusiastically. Well done!

it was a real game changer when I found out I could freeze 10% coffee creamer. I live 45 minutes away from a major city where I food shop and I like my coffee and creamer. I keep chickens for eggs, I do not have lights in their coop so they quit laying in October and start back laying in March. My girls lay 3 eggs a day for 4 hens and they are now 6 years old. In the winter we get -25 C for 3 weeks straight and there is no heat in their coop. To make it through the winter I scramble the eggs and freeze in ice cube trays. All eggs laid in Sept and Oct I keep in the fridge and they last into January so I really only need enough frozen eggs to take me into March. With only shopping every 3 months I live by my lists, everything to buy has to be on the list and I plan my trip based on what can stay in the vehicle the longest (so the feed store is 1st and the grocery store is last).

    • @stevet8121

Prior to moving to Alaska I sure did a lot of testing on what creamers I could freeze. I like what you are doing with the eggs! I had never thought about scrambling them first.🤔 I mostly use eggs for baking. You definitely have a good plan for eggs and I bet it's the same with everything else. 😁 But I absolutely plan my trips into town, always thinking about how much longer everything will be siting in the vehicle until I get home. Grocery store is almost always last unless I need to make a quick stop somewhere on my way out of town. Awesome comment Lyn! Love it! 😁

There will definitely be a camera on that blind spot! I can still work and live out here. But it does take up a big chunk of my day. So I don’t get to do all day trips to the hot springs videos….. YET! Also selling my house in Colorado helped. I was able to purchase the property clear and had enough to get a new roof. But how I pay to live like this is a legit question. A fenced in area so they can get outside and forage when the snow is gone. I believe that you would need netting or fencing material over the top to keep out predators with wings.

Howdie, lots in common here. Homeschooled my kids, volunteered at an 1800 living history museum with them for 10 plus years. Teaching the public how our ancestors lived in 1800s. I adore off grid living and cooking from wood stove. Grew up in Ozarks. But I'm an ex Navy gal and prefer warmer weather. Spent 4 years enlisted in Hawaii. I live in blistering hot Texas now. Not really a cold weather person and I'd get cabin fever in those dark Alaskan days. My daughter moved to Anchorage before covid. Drove there all the way from Texas and through the Yukon. I visited a year later to help her pack and return home. The pandemic really changed things and Alaska was cracking down hard. I've cherished my time there though and think its stunning in Beauty. AND WOW the fishing! Oh, bought myself an American Solar oven to cook from even though I live in the burbs. It arrived today! We could easily survive here if we lost grid. Anyway, glad to see you're stocked up too! New subscriber, catching up on a few videos. 🙂

You have a nice place in rural Alaska. I had some family working in Alaska in the late 70s and the late 80s. Extreme cold 80 degrees below zero in or around Nenana, Alaska back in about 1988 or so. I remember the movie " The money pit " the lady opening up the medicine cabinet and the constitution worker asked her what she needed and handed it to her because their was no wall and her medicine cabinet stuff was hanging of the scaffolding in a bucket.....lol....
I do the same thing with onion's, peppers, celery and the like I soak them in cold water with lemon juice ( couple of table spoons to the bowl ) while chopping... Then drain and freeze... Keeps for months and no discoloration at all ( old grandma secret )
If you can afford to... Stock up on anything that you can... the food prices are going to keep going up for the forcible future unfortunately.....
Ohhhh the beeping at the end.... Oh what a shock... I guess that proves that you are human..... Lol

What I found helped keep my freezers organized was milk crates. I could sort veggies, meats, breads and such in their own crates and stack them on top of each other. Saved food from freezer burn being able to have newer purchases to the bottom or back of each crate. Just a thought.

As for the BEARS they are creatures of habit jist like the moose so they tend to roam around their territory and check things out especially when they hear new noises be mindful and couscous but never in fear as fear causes mistakes. An electric fence charged by solar could provide a safer path to the outhouse at night. Even thought its light outside night time is when they tend to roam more. It might not hurt to have a one year supply of most of your food stuffs just in case. Your doing great you have this. Definitely more dog treats a little scotish voice told me to type that. Currently I use a 5 gallon bucket and use the outhouse only to dump the bucket. So no cold fridged, dark walks to the outhouse! I am slowly building up a longer supply of food. I love LOVE your fort. That is so great to have a barrier between you/Kenaye/electronics and the upcoming renovation work. I'm dealing with construction of a three story house right up against my lot since January. I feel for you! These changes are going to benefit you so much, just keep your eye on the prize!!! It's so worth your sacrifices now. Loving your explanation, it helps me to sort out what to get to stock up for myself. Your insights are much appreciated. Our lives are polar opposites, so fascinating to compare. We went from scorching dry hot to rain and MORE rain overnight, like a flick of a switch. Nice to see the snow is melting there and spring is popping up around you. You are doing so great with editing/filming. Talented for sure. Love Thursdays now! Hammer On! 🌺🌈

Ah yes, the grocery bill in Alaska! I remember taking my daughter grocery shopping in Alaska, - I was in shock to say the least - very expensive compared to the lower 48, indeed. The first time we went shopping for her - there, i. 2001 - I spent $850 dollars on her groceries. The positives - if my memory serves me correctly, was there was no taxes on actual perishables or food. We filled her freezer pretty well, but yes, groceries are expensive there.

Luckily for me, living in Colorado (California 2.0) I was used to paying a lot for groceries or anything actually. Now I can spend 1K and maybe be good for 6 months. But it does cost me 200 bucks in gas no matter what. And yes perishables still are not taxed. Nothing feels as good as being resupplied and ready for winter! LOL! Thank you so much Charlotte! 🧡

Love these kind of videos for cabin life. Tour the pantry and freezer, grocery haul contents, anything about food : ) ! Would be fun to see more cooking or meals for the day etc. For the ziplocks I get the strong freezer ones too and just wash and reuse them if no meat stored in them. I think I got the idea years ago from tightwad gazette. Buy a desktop file organizer from the thrift store and dry them inside out on the dividers. I don’t even bother turning them inside out anymore and they dry fine.
