    Adding blocking will not do what you want it to do. Blocking is used to keep your floor joists from twisting or leaning. You should either replace the floors with plywood or lay plywood down over the existing floor. You can then put down whatever finished flooring you want. Just trying to help. Miss Alone,
    You can do an easy fix on your old woodstove.
    It called stove black paste,any hardware store will have it.
    Use a putty knife and work it into the crack then give
    it a once over kinda thick.
    Next,fire up your stove hot,it will smoke as it cures.
    Ive used it before and it will save you good.

    Nothing wrong with that.

      I am sure you have gotton yourself a CO1 detector. That could save your life. Even if you fix one crack that doesn't mean you might not have another leak develop. Even your oil heater can malfunction and cause a carbon monoxide leak. Get one of the meter detectors which shows the actual amount present even before a lethal amount causing alarm to sound. This way you can catch a problem before it gets out of control. The meter will allow you to check the total amount of build-up over a period of time as well as a immediate level. A exposure of CO 1 over a period of time can be as damaging as a large short term exposure.

    As to the floors sagging, seems it needs more of a beam to go across the joists to give more support. Once level, then use luan 4x8 sheets over the plywood to make a smooth finish for the final covering. Say use marble to see how it travels on the floor?

    • @AloneinRemoteAlaska

    Good review of the cabin.
    Don't worry about the freezers in the unheated room through the winter. I keep mine out in the unheated barn all year around and in the winter it can get down to -30 F. They have been working fine for the past 5 years.
    Reflectix insulation is not designed to be enclosed in a wall. I have a Scamp trailer that has two layers of that stuff and it doesn't do any good. Reflectix is designed to have one service open so that the IR energy is reflected back. See the Reflectix web page for how the stuff works.
    For the water pipes I put them in a box of 2 inch purple foam board and have a heat tape inside with the pipes. The heat tape is not wound around the pipes but just run in side the box. You might be able to come up with something like a copper pipe around the wood stove that would circulate warm water through the foam board box to keep the pipes from freezing.
    Just using logs as an out side wall with no insulation might not be good in the winter as wood only has and R-value of 1 per inch of wood.
    I am not sure I understand what you mean by putting blocking in the beams in the loft floors. If you can I would put another set of beams between the ones you have so that they are on 12 inch centers.
    For your shower drain out to the garden use a 2 1/2 PVC pipe with a 1/4 inch per foot or better slope. It should drain all winter with out problem. A hose will not work in the winter and freeze up. The PVC has worked for me for two years now. I even put a heat tape in it just in case it ever freezes up which it hasn't so it is not plugged in all winter.

      The freezers in the arctic entry during winter was not my immediate concern but having them in there during the summer would be. They would have to work much harder. But I will have the arctic entry roof insulated next year and will see what the temps are like. The Reflectix is only going to be used on the root cellar ceiling. I won't have to worry about pipes freezing since I am having them capped off. I plan to keep the cabin a dry cabin.😁 The logs alone will give me a R12 which isn't the greatest but I can't use fiberglass or rockwool as that will attract mice like it did in the root cellar. I can't use foam as that will attract ants. Reflectix would at best only improve the R value 1-2 vertically. And no more spray foam!! 🤣Also the blocking is to keep the beams from "rolling" as that is a concern with the earthquakes we get. A 5/8" plywood above will do great keeping the floor from sagging. I definitely should have explained that part better! Sorry about that! 🤪And I agree with you on the 2 1/2" PVC drainage would be a much better option especially in winter. Thank you so much! 🧡💚

      @@AloneinRemoteAlaska I keep my freezers out in the uninsulated pole barn in the summer which gets to over 100 due to sun loading. They seem to work ok. LOL! I always knew that if I bought a used cabin (instead of having one built from scratch) that I would be changing and altering everything. Even if half these projects had been completed by the previous owners, it could just cause more issues. Like my greenhouse that is 1-3 snow storms away from collapsing. So now I not only have to build a new one I have to deal with the collapsing one. LOL I do tire a bit thinking about how long a road I have to go yet because I am no good trying to be patient either! 🤣🤣 It will all get done though! GUARANTEED! Thank you so much Cheryl! 🧡🤗💚

    Just a suggestion, consider putting down 3/8 or 1/4 inch plywood on top of the plywood that is currently down. make sure to glue and staple it down then put the laminent flooring down. This will make a nice smooth surface and will help stop any squeaks or creaks. you definitely have a lot of good ideas. Look forward to seeing it come to life.

    Girlfriend, I dont know where to begin. Your floor joists on both floors are disasters waiting to happen. Like others have said, the joists need to be sistered before they are blocked, & then the thin flooring replaced it covered with 3/4” plywood.
    Definitely replace that wood stove! It’s dangerous & unhealthy. Don’t wait until winter to buy it. You need to practice heating & cooking with it while the weather is moderate.
    Those stairs! Yikes. But I wouldn’t go up them anyway until the floors have been stabilized. I wouldn’t do any work up there until that happens.
    So floors & stove. That would be my priorities before tackling a pantry or removing interior walls imho.

    • @AloneinRemoteAlaska
      @AloneinRemoteAlaska  Před 2 lety

      The floor joists wont need to be sistered unless they are damaged but I think what the commenters are saying is adding a center joist to make the 24 inch on center a 12 inch on center (which is way overkill). 24 inch on center will work fine with a 2x9 joist as long as the joists get blocked and a 5/8" plywood is added to the top. And the blocking is to keep the joists from "rolling" if there is an earthquake (and of course for load sharing). Now that is far more than I ever wanted to know about floor joists! 🤣 I agree with you on the wood stove and I have found some wood stove cement that I will be able to cover the crack with. Purchasing a new wood stove will have to wait though as the wood cook stoves are a bit pricey! YIKES! We are almost the same with the priorities as I have come up with the seal/chinking of the cabin, new wood cook stove and redo the stairs. And then the flooring. Thank you so much Deb! 🧡🤗💚

    Keeping those logs exposed on the inside is going to cost you dearly in annual fuel costs. Raw wood only has an R value of just over R1 per inch. So if your narrowest thickness is say 5" then you only have R5 in those walls (total). 12" thick walls of solid wood is about the lowest you would want to consider leaving them exposed on the inside in your part of the state. If you were to frame in 2-3" of foam boards then cover those with horizontal 1x6" boards it would keep the same appearance but add 20 - 30 R value, which would easily pay for itself in 2-3 years of fuel savings. Thereafter you could have to process say 5 cords less firewood each year.

    • @AloneinRemoteAlaska
      @AloneinRemoteAlaska  Před 2 lety

      They are 8" D logs and would get an R value of 11.28. No matter how this gets done, I have to remove the crappy way everything was covered before and remove the spray foam and clean off the walls. Basically get rid of the 70's paneling and spray foam! After that I may consider other ways to frame the wall. I get what you are saying on the keeping the look and gaining some R value though. Obviously all the paneling was spray foamed in for a reason. And possibly hastily installed! More to come on this subject later. But using less firewood is definitely the goal! Thank you so much! 🧡🤗💚

    Stairs: believe me, I appreciate reusing material, and I have rehabbed quite a few old houses! Having said that, IMHO it would be far better to simply install standard stringers and standard stair treads than to makeshift it. It's not going to be that expensive. In fact, sometimes it's much LESS expensive to build something standard (because it takes less labor and you can probably buy pre-cut stringers) then to spend the time to jury-rig something from discarded materials. Standard stringers also will be more stable, especially in earthquake country. I think as you get older you will appreciate a really good staircase. Just my 2 cents.

    Your Indoor Entry to your Root Cellar is nice. I like the pulley and wire to make opening the entrance nice. I noticed the highest pulley needs to be changed to a double pulley so the wire can be looped back and forth once for leverage. A pulley adds horse power to a lift. However, not with one or two single wheel pulleys just connected with a straight wire. For leverage or to add power the “block and tackle” has to make a worker loop in the wire. The double pulley with two wheels is the highest pulley, the wire goes through it first after being attached to the cellar door then, to a single wheel pulley that you already have in the direction of the handle not too close to the double pulley next, back to the double pulley and around the second wheel back to the handle area with a second single wheel pulley that you already have now, back towards the double pulley is where the wire is pointing last, one more single pulley to point the wire to the handle! Your block and tackle now has an extra loop in it so the pulleys act like gears! Your door should feel like 1/3rd less weight or better. I attached an Amazon link for a double pulley

      Hello Susan! I am so happy you are enjoying my channel! The stairs will be fixed soon I hope but not this year. So I have at least one more winter to go with them as is. I do walk down them a lot slower now though! When they get rebuilt they will definitely have a banister on both sides! And the stairs may cut in half and have a landing to turn on the rest of the way down. We will see! Thank you so much Susan! 🧡🤗💚

    When I was 12 or so, I backed down the hatch opening going into basementof our log cabin and slid down stairs and hit head and back. Happened so fast! Didn’t get hurt, that I knew of, didn’t go to the hospital. It’s a miracle, in hindsight.

      @@AloneinRemoteAlaska we plug/unplug freezers daily based on outside temps. In winter if it’s subzero we open them up to let in cold air (unless too cold, the air can actually dehydrate food). Most summer days we run them -6 hrs. Winter is temp based. If freezers are full and food frozen they don’t need to be plugged in 24 hrs (my experience). Adf&g has some great video tutorials on electric fencing. Hugs to Kenai, he’s a good boy💜💜

    The Amish make some wonderful airtight cookstoves. I think they are Pioneer maid. I have been researching wood-cook stoves that have a nice size oven and longer burn time. Some of the new ones will burn depending on species of wood from 3-5 hours. I haven’t looked at Elvira’s for years, they used to have small ovens and had a whole lot of fancy I didn’t need. My brother in law just bought a brand new one and loves it. But it’s at his cabin so it only gets used periodically. We are somewhat limited as well to what we can get but it’s probably easier for us then you. Anyways I love all the Reno’s that are in your future and in ours too (to watch). Great job girl. 💕🇨🇦

      The Elmira does over do the fancy on their stoves. I don't care too much about that either. I do love the Pioneer Princess and the Kitchen Queen. However if I can find the old military wood cook stoves they had out here when they were building the ALCAN! Those wood stoves just had all the features and zero fluff! I seriously doubt I would ever find one though. And you can guarantee that all the projects I spoke of on both videos will be filmed for you! Many years of content left! 😜 Thank you so much Lyn! 🧡🤗💚

    YAY!!!! You are back!!!
    So excited to see your next video!! I am the second poster!💫✨🥰
    In regards to the stairs ,stairs can be is so dangerous!!
    In the winter when my dog was taking me down the stairs there was snow that I wasn’t used to I fell and hurt my tailbone and hit my head. Also up on my top my deck my dog got underneath me and made me fall and I hit my head again you just have to be really careful with stairs. I’m kind of afraid of mine because they’re high and I’m going to get strip guards on the wood to make it a little bit more safe. But I worry a lot as I get older with the stairs. I have to try to figure out things I can do to minimize my falls. That is my opinion about stairs. However I know people in their 70s that walk up and down a huge flight of stairs and they know how to do it.
    SAUNA!!!! I have one too!!!

      Hey Violet! I have never had a problem with stairs until I bought this cabin. Amazing how uneven stairs can make such a difference! I have no issues with the stairs going down to the root cellar! The first time I fell it was bad but I got lucky and didn't get hurt too bad. the second time was a full wipe out. I must have laid there for 20-30 minutes. Poor Kenai didn't know what I was doing. Filming videos brought tears to my eyes sometimes because of the pain and all I wanted to do was lay down. I always make Kenai go down the stairs in front of me.😁 Stair safety is my new thing! But I seriously do walk down the stairs one step at a time like a 5 year old. 🤣 Thank you so much Violet! 🧡🤗💚

    On the stairs, you could have the inside of the log stringers cut back say 3" to give a flat surface to make a new tread/steps. Usually around 7" high, you will need to measure the total height to the upper floor level. An outer handrail with posts could be added.

    I think along with you. An advantage is that your cabin is so spacious that you can set up a lot yourself. But what is a lot in strange places. Lots of work for you. If you want to dig a well anyway, then water in the house is a small step I think? If you build everything without water now, such as the kitchen, and still want water in the house in a few years' time, you have to break everything open again. Plus you have a lot more costs. And it saves space again if you don't have to store water.

    • @AloneinRemoteAlaska
      @AloneinRemoteAlaska  Před 2 lety

      I hear you on the pipes and someday if I need water piped back into the cabin I will do that. For now, even with a well installed, it will not be plumbed into the cabin. I would use the well basically the same as I use the well I drive to now and that is to just collect water in containers. If I can hook up to the well and just run hoses to the cabin to refill, that will be perfect. Thank you so much! 🧡🤗💚

All of your ideas will look fantastic and cannot wait to see the progress even more so. When your cabin is complete and everything in order, you will be able to be so better organised in your daily routine and function as you would want to. I know it will take some time yet and I'm with you on your journey. I wish for you that it all goes well, with the minimum of delays and associated possible issues. I was wondering about when the weather starts to change for winter. When do you have to start preparing for this and what kind of things do you need to do, in anticipation of the cold and snow etc?? Is it a sudden change? Or can it be different each year? although i realise you have only experienced one winter so far, I think. Is there any work that you need to get done, house structure wise, before this winter? Love your videos and your out takes give a giggle, love that you add those. So keep safe and well Alone and here's looking forward to your next installment ☺️

      It certainly is a long list of needs and wants. I just have to have everything built in stages. At least you can expect to see a few years of construction going on here! Last year when I arrived it was already close to winter and I had about three weeks to get ready. My son will be here soon and we have some projects to get done. And I would like to show him around Alaska a bit. Once I get 6 more cords of firewood delivered and stacked, I have to get some water storage going and fill them up. Then its all about making runs to Anchorage or Fairbanks to pick up a lot of food! Glad you are enjoying the out takes. I almost always have them and I would just scrap them before. Now when I am editing a video I just push those clips to the end and fit them in. Easy and I should have done it a long time ago! LOL 🤣 Thank you so much! 🧡🤗💚
