    There is always so much content in these videos, so much so that it is often hard to take in. However when Ed said ‘I see two barrels when i shoot’, my heart leapt. I am not abnormal, I not a ‘problem’. Yes I know I have issues around mount, fit and technique; my problem can vary from severe to mild according to mount, but just knowing that the sight picture I have is normal is so encouraging.

    I had a client come to me with a driven bird issue recently. His optician had told him that eye dominance was a myth. I established that he had strong cross eye dominance to the point that he was leaning his head over the stock to line up his opposite eye. As an occasional game shot who’d never had a lesson, he’d never considered it. Following some coaching having established this, he overcame the issue and reported back that his shooting had improved massively.

    I am left handed but i throw with my right hand and i shoot of my right shoulder i cast a fly rod with my right hand .after testing i was told im left eye dominant. Solution for me close left eye went from a 50 % shooter to a 75 to 80% shooter . It's not perfect didn't cost me a penny and it's amazing how fast you adapt

    There was another aspect to shooting that would make a good video for you guys besides our dominance issues. Balance is a huge problem, especially since long term Covid related issues. Many shooters have disabilities or they’re older, and they have poor balance.

    I’m right handed and shoot on the right but I’m strongly left eye dominant. For shotgun shooting I shot with both eyes open and focus on the target. I also use an Easyhit bead which easily shows me which barrel image to use whilst aiming.
    For rifle shooting (which I’ve done for longer) and where focus needs to be on the foresight and not the target I use a black blinder over the left eye and even close the left eye completely sometimes to improve image clarity. When I started I was told to use a white or opaque blinder but I’ve found black worked better.
    What I’ve learnt is that you need to try multiple solutions and see what works best for you and your eyes.

    I am right handed but very strong left eye dominant. Luckily as a kid shooting iron sight air rifles I learnt to shoot left handed. So glad I did for the sake of my shotgun shooting. For years I closed my right eye but Sam Grice got me to try shooting both eyes open. Difficult at first and I was frankly a bit annoyed as I only wanted a refresher before the game season but after 1000 clays I decided to stick with it for a season and very glad I did. Helped mostly on dead straight driven birds.

    know a couple of shooters who have both lost the vision in their shooting eye , both swapped their gun to the other shoulder and both still shoot very well , or at least as well as they did before losing their eye . I also know a guy who is the best all round shot I have ever met , rifle , pistol, clay target and field shooting . He is left handed and right eye dominant and does all his shooting right handed. Loosing the sight in one eye isn't the end of shooting .

    excellent video! A subject close to my heart after having issues with right to left targets. I first noticed after struggling on a round at Grimsthorpe and going back for a session with Mark the owner - we could just not figure out where I was going wrong on a particulat target. After that in a session with a friend on a skeet range I round I could only be consistent on right to left targets by occluding my left eye entirely. After that whilst getting my gun fit checked out using a video and dry-fire system the right to left inconsistency (often missing high and infront) was clear. Finally I settled on using shot spots to slightly occlude the vision in my left eye - noticed the difference especially when Ed S checked out my gun fit and I forgot to put my shooting glasses on - kept mounting under my left eye every so often! Now whether it's a reall eye issue or a technical flaw remains to be resolved but definitely a phenomenon!

    I was left handed as kid, but teachers changed the pencil to my right hand. I still kick (for power) with my left foot. I would describe myself as "mainly" right eye dominant. However, on certain shots... when I just can't seem to hit them... I can close down that left eye and bang... start hitting them right away. That's the difficult part. WHEN will this thing rear its head? I was also an avid archer. When shooting traditional (no sights) my left eye would take over about 1 in 50 arrows. The result is ugly with a bow. Rarely even find the arrow. The lower the light (dusk), the more likely it was to strike. Right now, in my analysis, I would say the most probable shots to be problematic are left to right crossers... especially deeper and flat (edge). If the birds are more up in the sky, I don't seem to have as much of a problem it seems (so far). I have gone back and forth with tape or no tape for 2 years. Currently, closing down the left seems to be best for ME. Because the tape seemed to help on a few shots, but frustrated me on most every other stand. Closing down the left is less... intrusive I would call it, but I have only been doing it a few weeks. Now I am working to see if on "those" shots, I just close it down as I am taking the shot rather than on the mount. I guess the point is... I suspect this is quite a variable issue, that will have variable fixes for different shooters. BTW... Is it a myth that this affects more women than men? That's another one I hear as a youth coach.

    I have monocular vision by design while not shooting. My left eye sees up close, and my right eye sees distance. I have been doing this setup for over ten years. Of course while shooting I use only distance glasses so I can gain better depth of field. The downside of this has been my eyes fight for dominance, and I struggle to shoot with both eyes open. I compensate for this by squinting my left eye after tracking down the target. This seems to work for me. Great video!

    • @p.williamfox6417
      @p.williamfox6417 Před 6 měsíci +1

      There is a lot of good information in this video. I have the same issue and wear single vision with correction for distance only also and I have found that for me that if I drop the correction I needed by -.25 in the eye I don’t want to be dominant will keep it from interfering with the other eye as much. This has helped me a lot but if you have to have a stronger prescription than I do you may have to adjust more than me. I still see a crisp image but it keeps my dominance to the eye that has the best image even though you can’t really tell it. The tented lens that are used to force eye dominance have exactly the same downside just like they explain in this video. Also I found that brown transitions have worked best for me. You want enough light passing through lenses into eyes to activate cones instead of rods in your eyes. This has a major effect on your ability to instinctively calculate speed for lead.

    A lot of people seem to think they have eye dominance issues but in reality in my experience its normally gun fit/ gun mount inconsistencies, especially with newer shooters they dont mount the gun the same every time. They usually dont realise this, and then someone mentions "eye dominance" and they assume thats what the have, practice mounting the gun the exact same every time.

    Fantastic video. I hope a lot of experts watch this as there is a lot of good information to consider here. One question I have is: Does having extended chokes that contrast the barrels ( i.e. silver chokes on blued barrels) create more visual confusion / distraction for cross dominant shooters and do you recommend avoiding that setup? I feel like there is a lot going on if somebody has say a mid bead, then different chokes, like there is all kinds of things going on in the "ghost image" to mess you up.

    Compelling deep dive. And regarding targets as 3D presentations: does it ever REALLY matter if it's coming or going? That is, it strikes me that we may indeed see in 3D but shoot more successfully in 2D, that is to say, when we interpret a target's path in 2D. Just as an accomplished illustrator, for instance, does not draw what they know (front, sides, back) but merely what they see in two dimensions. Which explains why most folks can't draw and many of us can't shoot worth a shite. Dunno....

    I wonder if Mr Lyons can help me. Have not read any comments that remotely relate to my eyes. Born, 81 years ago with as far as I can tell two eyes pointing in the same direction. As the eye muscles settled in at age about 2, I developed an alternating squint of 33 degrees. This I suffered with through my teenage years & having arrived in the UK, then 18, took myself off for eye surgery. First eye was operated on with now an improvement to 10 degrees. Asked the surgeon to operate on the other eye. My eyes were then as straight as possible, with a plus 1 degree outward squint. Hurrah.
    Until I stepped out to catch a bus. Problem was which bus! I had the most awful double vision.
    All this later improved as the brain made the necessary adjustment. That was 1961. Now I have a pronounced outward Strabismus & off course have never had binocular vision. Both eyes with corrective lens work, but not together. I can switch from one eye to the other. That is the challenge for someone to help me move up from a"C" class shot.

A low house on station one of skeet I miss repeatedly when shooting both eyes. Throw me a big batue from either direction I crush them. I'm going round and round with this with my son, who is right handed but apparently left-eye dominant, although not strongly. He's currently shooting trap left-handed, he has tape over his right eye on his shooting safety glasses. I don't think we have this completely figured out, but his scores have gone up to 15 from basically zero. So...progress.
    I should add: it's hard to nail down a technique/vision problem since we also had poi and load issues--the gun loves 7.5 but not 8 shot, for one.

    • @AdamsClayPigeonGuide
      @AdamsClayPigeonGuide Před 6 měsíci

      If he is truly left eye dominant and now shooting off his left shoulder, you shouldn't really need to put tape over his right eye, unless he has confusion with the sight picture or isn't truly dominant as suggested. If he hadn't swapped shoulders, then he would normally have had to tape his left (the dominant eye) to stop it taking over. Have you consulted an instructor and are they genuinely an expert on eye dominance? When you are cross dominant, the main issue, is that you have no connection with where the gun is pointing, as the brain isn't receiving the image from the eye that is over the rib of the gun.

Started again two years ago and immediately had all the confusion. As I had shot 35 years ago, I knew something wasn't right so looked into it and discovered eye dominance. It can also change throughout the day.

Visual input and cortical preference can shift in a transient way through stress, fatigue, hydration levels, blood sugar, hormone levels etc or in a more permanent way through refractive or pathological conditions. There’s a study by Khan and Crawford that have shown it can change on horizontal gaze angle too!!

    Good video. I've watched several videos on eye dominance and I've not yet seen one describing my particular issue. When shooting with both eyes open I do not see two barrels. What I do see is a side view of the barrels as picked up by my off eye. Typical cross dominance issue, right? Trouble is, if I switch shoulders (I'm equally comfortable shooting right or left handed), my other off eye picks up the side view as well. It seems that whichever side I shoot from my brain picks the side view as its default. Whether shooting right or left handed, if I close or squint my off eye, my shooting eye is looking directly down the rib at the target as it should. So far, my best solution is to close one eye and I am working on keeping both eyes open until the target flashes and then squinting the off eye to actually aquire it. The transition between two eyes open and one eye can be problematic though.

Certainly folks that pay that kind of money think they do, and that's great. But I'm asking if that improvement is REAL or PERCIEVED?

    Just a couple of questions; 13:07 Which one single product/person are you talking about? Because I'm not sure that I've seen anybody say that. Then, 20:50 which instructor said shoot quicker because I was told that by one instructor and it certainly didn't work for me either. Indeed, another instructor afterwards, told me to slow down and it worked.

    Hi Ed, I’ve been shooting for nearly 30 years and was told by my uncle I needed 45:59 to close an eye, so always have done. Having done some of the eye dominance tests I am left eye dominant but shoot off my right shoulder. However, just recently I have started shooting with both eyes open and although at first the picture looked strange the results have been ok. Also if I focus on something in the distance with my gun in my shoulder and then close my eye I am bang on it. On the other hand with driven targets, as you say in the video, I am up the left hand side of them. Do you think it’s worth persisting with it and find what works or am I best to go back to closing an eye? Thanks

    • @K80Ed
      @K80Ed Před 6 měsíci +3

      My view would be your left eye obviously isn’t causing issues on every target which is pretty common.
      If as you say when you close your eye the gun stays on target it is causing zero issue there so you other eye is dominant.
      On driven you find the “off” eye has a better view of the clay so often dominance will switch.
      In this instance, I’d shut the eye.
      Where it causes a problem, address the problem. Where there is no problem, keep both open.

I shoot trap, and a 22 average shooter. My eye Dr. Helped me by making a pair of shooting glasses with my left eye one diopter low. I can say it did help, but the blurry vision is sometimes annoying. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Ps. I'm 61 years old and have Astigmatism in my right eye., from a lazy eye lid

    Really curious on this topic. I used to shoot with one eye closed and shoot right handed. Went to a shooting school who said I’m left eye dominate and wanting me to shoot with both eyes open. My shooting is worse. Now transitioned me to shooting left handed also, hitting more on the left with both eyes but ultimately less than shooting right handed with one eyed closed. What’s the answer here… can you be a good shooter with an eye closed??

    • @AdamsClayPigeonGuide
      @AdamsClayPigeonGuide Před 6 měsíci +2

      Simple answer yes you can shoot one eye closed, especially if you shoot better. Unfortunately, a lot of instructors only have a limited knowledge on the subject. Swapping shoulders is possibly the best option for a lot of people. However, it isn't the best for everybody, you have to find that is best for you and that may mean a lot of trial and error. Have you looked at occluding the left eye or different beads? These are other options. You maybe able to find something, to still shoot right handed and with both eyes open.

      I went to the ground where he "teaches" the other day. No wonder he's deluded, you could catch his tennis ball easily from one side to the other of the ground. One or two targets needed two foot of lead tops, most 6 inches. There are about 6 stands, that occupy the space of one stand on a decent comp layout. I was tempted to ask my mate, to press the B button on stand 2 so I could shoot it from stand 6. Not knocking the ground at all, they had a good variety with the space they have but you can't use those stands, to back up a poor argument over "The Natural Shit"

      @@twinpotracer Exactly that, any technique will work, my mate has only shot about 500 shells and he can hit just about everything there. Most shooters could get the beginners he bewilders to hit the targets that they have. Once again, not knocking the ground, they were friendly and they can only do so much with the land available. I affectionately liken my local club to a pitch and putt par 3 golf course but where he works is a lot smaller. There's a video of his awful teaching with a young lad, he is leaning so far back anticipating the recoil bless him and Cyril clearly hasn't corrected him. You'll find it if you search Millride shooting on YT. The area you see on that video is just about the whole ground of about 8 or 9 stands maybe?

    The irony of an eye specialist looking to establish marketing authority by discussing myths who actually believes in the biggest myth of all time, and who cannot even see with his own eyes what he is living in and who thinks the sea is not level and that the seas curve around a ball! To use your own words Mr Lyons, you try to prove yourself wrong by reading findings of other peoples' studies for your optician work, and this has helped develop your expertise as an optician then I suggest you apply that to an important reality instead of spouting your programming. On the basis of your disparaging and unnecessary comment about "those who think the earth is flat" you clearly believe in the biggest myth of all time 'Ball Earth Theory' AKA 'Globe' (yes its still a theory) - something that has never been proven and never will be as water always finds its level (clue). If you were to apply your stated research approach and have the spuds to take on the FE challenge then you will find that there are no proofs of a ball earth only lots of photoshop images and you will find thousands of very obvious FE proofs. As a topical example (guns and optics), the US Navy's Sea Sparrow Gun has 'painted' a target with its laser over 50 miles away (what is the key property of a laser? (Straight). How is this an example? Well, because if the official ball earth theory were true it would not be possible to paint a target at that distance. Another proof is the Suez canal which has no locks and is 100 miles long, if water miraculously curved around your spinning ball then there should be a curvature of 6,666 feet but no its level. For someone who apparently 'researches', that obnoxious sounding comment you made tells me that you clearly are not paying attention. And to denigrate or dismiss a group of diligent people who fully research the truth without researching your own findings first, is the height of ignorance. Apart from that, great content from TGSO as usual, and some good eye issue explanations too. Maybe TGSO can get Ed Lyons to do a follow up video explaining to us all how we can hit anything at all if we live on a ball spinning at hundreds of miles an hour?
