  • On the back of some videos we have done with Mr Solomon’s I booked a trip to see Ed Lyons, one of the world’s authorities in sports vision.
    I don’t know what I expected to happen - but this experience has improved my daily life in every way (and hopefully with a bit of time, my shooting will follow suit!)

    Just had cataracts removed and replacement lenses added to both eyes. I can’t believe the difference. I can actually see again. I like how your optometrist stores his shells in his exam room. 6:12. It must be easier dealing with a shooter as opposed to trying to explain everything thing to someone who doesn’t shoot.

    Ed L is very good at explaining optometric concepts in a readily accessible way, which many clinicians struggle with. Very much enjoyed this video but doubt there’s going to be any space in Ed L’s diary for a new shooting patient consultation! Watching Jonny react to his new specs brought back memories of when I was first prescribed specs and struggled crossing the road when I left the opticians as I couldn’t judge distances properly! 😂

    As I mentioned in the first video of this series, this is outstanding information. Since the first video, I have started using corrective contacts when is shoot. I have learned that I too have a astigmatism in my left (off) eye. The script is not too strong but oh what a difference. I am experiencing the same things you are Jonny. Seeing the target faster, clearer and with detail. Sometimes they look like trash bin lids.

    I’ve recently taken up clay shooting and have been struggling a bit with discovering what works for me and my eyes.
    I have a weak left eye which had an operation for astigmatism when I was 4. My two eyes open sight is great however I think that I’ve been challenged with where my weak eye helps and hinders. I’ve recently felt that (after watching your previous vid with the Ed’s) squinting the weak eye works wonders.

    Wow, that was very interesting! Being of a certain age, I am now noticing that my eye sight is beginning to deteriorate and I definitely need glasses for reading and writing as my arms are no longer long enough. During this video I found myself closing each eye in turn in order to see the effect on clarity and low and behold, the picture through my right eye is much sharper than the picture through my left eye. I think that I may need to explore the possibilities of a visit to Ed Lyons in order to get my old eyes checked out. Only problem is that it sounds like more expense, my wife may very well kill me!!!

It was very strange getting on the automatic escalator to go down to the main floor of the mall as it was hard to judge where to put my foot on the moving steps. A couple of days later everything seemed normal.

    It's like the old joke about the city slicker who went to buy a horse from a farmer. after picking out the one he wanted the farmer said: "Now I gotta tell you something about that horse; he don't look too good."
    "What are you talking about?" said the city slicker, "That's a beautiful animal!"
    "Suit yourself" said the farmer as he took the man's money. On the way back to the city he chose to let go of the reins to roll a cigarette right where the road curved. The horse wandered off the road and walked squarely into a tree. Infuriated, he went back to the farm and confronted the farmer.
    "You crooked S.O.B., you sold me a blind horse!"
    "Well I already told you" said the farmer calmly, "He don't look too good."

    The comment about choosing prescription shooting glasses over contacts because of astigmatism was interesting. Do you think that holds for all individuals with astigmatism, because of the factor of the lenses rotating? The best lens options aren’t all offered in prescription options (Riact, Pilla visors, etc). I wonder if shooting with contacts and non prescription glasses could be more convenient if one’s prescription changes over time.

    • @edlyonssportsvision9197
      @edlyonssportsvision9197 Před rokem +1

      It all depends on how the lens behaves when on the eye during static and dynamic testing. One of the issues we have is the lens manufacturers only make the parameters they can sell the most of, rather than every single prescription that exists. This can be fine for day to day use but may be too much of a visual compromise for shooters. There are some lenses which fuse soft and GP technology and I’ve had great success fitting these with clients winning world titles after going down the Hybrid route

    @Ed Lyons SportsVision Hi Ed, besides correcting JC's astigmatism and spherical power, which is part of a normal sight test, how did you incorporate any of the issues found from your sports vision screening into the specs? Did you modify the PD, use mono pds? Incorporate heights to adjust for his mount position, did you add prisms? What did you do besides give him his full rx? Really keen to understand as a fellow optometrist.
    It'll also be interesting to see how long he takes to adjust to the fact that he wont now be suppressing his non dominant eye. Thanks in advance

    • @sundeeprana

      That sounds interesting... I will keep an eye out for it
      However, I was more interested in knowing what information you used beyond a normal prescription to dispense the specs, as the video didn't really relate the benefits of all the extra checks to the final glasses produced....
      It was very focussed on astigmatism correction, which is corrected routinely in every sight test and dispense of specs, where required.
      I've tested and prescribed specs for shooting school instructors and other shooters, as well as friends and had no issues and was really hoping this video or your response would identify how what you provide differs, and unfortunately it hasn't on this occasion.
      I'd be happy to send patients to you if you can answer my query. Thanks in advance, may also help the audience understand the benefits better too

I don’t have any diary space for three months, but we do have a cancellation list which is pretty active if you need to send anyone across 👍

    • @sundeeprana
      @sundeeprana Před rokem +1

      Thanks Ed, but I was actually more concerned from a customers perspective.
      I just happen to be in the same occupation, so my question was more technical, but essentially I was asking as some of the other viewers have asked, what do you give us in your specs above and beyond the prescription from the local opticians.
      There just wasn't any mention of anything but the normal prescription going into the specs.
      I'm going to leave this here as I dont want to come across as putting you on the spot or for you to have to duck the question for a 3rd time as that's not my intention.
      A lot of the viewers would've been led to believe the glasses incorporate all the results of your extra tests, but my interpretation is they are just the standard prescription as shotgun shooting involves looking at distance and having a wide field of view. Adjustments to prescriptions are generally required for Rifle shooting, I work with a rifle shooter in the GB team who is also an optician so i know a little about that too, great guy actually
