The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

The Animals would break up a month after this performance, so it’s nice to see this final hurrah. Eric Burden then formed a new group called Eric Burden and the Animals. Chas Chandler (on bass) would go on to manage Jimi Hendrix and Slade, so he arguably benefited significantly from the breakup.

Linda (Eastman) McCartney stated in her book of 60’s rock and roll photos that Eric Burdon was a true soul man. No one could reproduce the feel of the original African American singers the way he could. Eric was once quoted that American blues spoke the the British youth. He said, coming from working-class Manchester, John Lee Hooker singing “I got a job in a steel mill, shucking steel like a slave…” was very relatable and relevant to them.

Dave Rowberry (1940-2003). When this performance was filmed, he had actually been in the band for over a year at that point, as Alan Price had departed in May 1965.

Like the drummer's 'cool' attitude here. Looks like he's (and perhaps equally as well with the wannabe 'hipster' on the keys) just going through the motions and merely wants to get it over with - likely giving a rat's arse who he's in fact playing for, or of even Sullivan himself.

The keyboardist is Dave Rowberry, who had replaced Alan Price.
Rowberry’s musicianship and jazz experience contributed to The Animals’ success. He looked liked Alan Price, but his personality was less aggressive.
