Today’s racing simulators replicate real-world driving with incredible accuracy, but how do they do it?
F1 drivers spend hours in simulators honing their driving and even trying out setups to use in the real F1 car, and the level of detail put into the simulation is astonishing.
The tracks are accurate to just a few millimetres, and every detail of the car is replicated, right down to the tiniest degree of chassis flex.
But how are games able to match the feeling of a real race car so accurately, and what are some of the genius tricks that they use to do it?
There are a number of clever ways that creators of racing sims have made them as realistic as possible.
Before we get to the cars, it’s the tracks that have an essential role in making a sim as realistic as possible.
The quality of the tracks in a game has a huge bearing on how the car feels, and it’s about far more than just mapping out the circuit accurately to real life.
Just like in the real world, the surface you’re driving on - makes a massive difference. So the games need to take account for this in their tracks and overall physics modelling.
For example, there are many things I notice in real cars that are also present in the games. At Abu Dhabi there are loads of awkward, off-camber corners that create understeer.
And at turn 1 in Silverstone, there is a bump on the apex that can unsettle the car if you’re not careful.
As a result, the most realistic simulators use laser scanned tracks for the most true-to-life car behaviour.
In real life, no surface is perfectly smooth, and even minute bumps and imperfections in the road can have a profound effect on the way a car responds.
Undulations and bumps cause a car’s weight to shift around, which unloads the tyres and requires constant adjustments from the driver to compensate.
They make the car feel alive as a result, so in a simulator, accurately reproduced track surfaces adds a whole other dimension to the driving experience.
And with a good force feedback wheel, you can appreciate the detail of a laser-scanned surface even more, as the wheel reacts to bumps in the tarmac.
Many sims use laser scanning to reproduce tracks and capture this element of driving with insane precision.
These laser scanned tracks contain every ridge, bump and kerb of the real circuit, accurate to the nearest few millimetres. However, this takes a matter of months to capture every detail and can be enormously costly.
However, there is another way. Some sims, like F1 2020, use other data to create their incredibly accurate track models.
To create a track, Codemasters (the developers of the F1 games) use a photographer to capture the details, and the circuit designers share their CAD drawings and architectural renders.
These are the designs that were actually used to create the circuit.
From this, Codemasters are able to accurately map out the path of the circuit, with the placement of barriers, DRS markers and kerbs precisely reproduced.

Photogrammetry is simply incapable of dealing with surface noise.
Codemasters are being simply cheap. Lidar scanning attracts a slightly higher cost, but the surface definition is immensely better.
I can scan a 700meters Kart circuit in a couple of days, up to +- 2mm in height
Photogrammetry would take one day, and only take me to +- 20mm in height.

Laser scanning is the correct procedure to capture what was actually built in the first place.
Construction plans are indicative, and have tolerances built into them (the spec), so can't be trusted for something like a small dip.
Ground effect cars are super sensitive to a few millimeters hump on the middle of the track, that will not be on the plans, nor can be captured using photogrammetry.

It is good circuits are being scanned onto a digital file. Oran Park in Australia was an iconic race circuit before being turned into a housing estate. Fortunately this circuit was scanned and even though it is only in the virtual world, it can still be driven and raced onto now and into the future.
To really get an appreciation of what an F1 simulator is really like, I suggest looking at the video that Red Bull did a few years ago with Danial Riccardo and an F1 commentator.

The top 3 most serious sims : Iracing, ACC and Rfactor 2 all have their own version of the most complete aero model they could implement. As far as turbulent effects, air going under the car and such, none are superbly realistic if you're looking for a high refresh precise calculation as there's a lot of simplifications, volumes/vectors and so on, as far as I know no sim really gets as deep as having accurate-ish resonance effects, and is one of the reasons why damage and real life strategies and having safer and slower driving setup on your car doesn't matter enough in the games, because they don't reflect damaging effects on some of the parts accurately as you'd need millions of simple calculations worth of computing power(per hz) compared to thousands at maximum, so were definitely atleast a factor of 10, more like 100+ to being "accurate" . Models have simpler, cutoffish formulas with smoother, baked-in effects/transitions per hertz(physics usually refresh at a rate of of 3 digit to four digit number depending on how the software is written. you get the drift;)

    • @japanesecar1501
      @japanesecar1501 Před 2 lety +1

To make clearer for you, the computing powr may not be that much of a problem, because reality is actually unknown, every same tire rod and nut are different. So just having enough DATA and vision, AI help probably too, to know how to write accurate simulation, with the right interjections and enough parameters/ programming "style" that reflects real world you won't need a supercomputer to have very satisfactory results with everything you can think of. Old Assetto corsa is pretty simple, but its pieces can be assembled together so well, that as far as force transfer its still pretty good. Even running on an old Xbox One, which is like 500 gigaFlops of available computing power( modern gpu broke 10 teraFlop= 20 times that, already). It's all about data, and damage is directly related to flex and physics, but we approach from the known or approximated/projected known behaviours that are easy to replicate in a sim.

If the tracks are being scanned for F1 simulators surely there's a way for an official F1 licensed game to get a hold of these scans. Or is that somehow too much data forour little gaming consoles and PCs to handle?
If it's that expensive to scan in a track, surely someone must have had the thought at some point "hey lets sell this racetrack data to a racing game develloper and recover some of the money spent that way".
Or does every team scan the track for themselves, which therefor would make them reluctant to sell those scans for the possibility of giving rival teams an advantage? But then why not sell last years scans. Slightly outdated yes, but probably still more accurate then that method you said codemasters used.

Since trying iRacing in VR, I cannot go back to F1 games until these too have VR and improved wheel integration as the feedback is essential information unfortunately unclear or dull. I'm surprised F1's new marketing company Liberty didn't foresee F1 games as a major opportunity, particularly during the pandemic. Codemasters already had VR in Dirt Rally 2.0.

All the sims are just calculators packaged into a racing game, with different parameters you can adjust. The calculator wont give you the wrong results if all the parameters are correct (and if there are enough of them). It's just really hard to get all the parameters correct and have enough of them to get all the transient effects correct too. rFactor (or even rFactor Pro) is not inherently more realistic, it just has very good capabilities if there is enough data for the car and skill to implement everything correctly.

Imo ACC and iRacing come close to being a perfect sim, that a normal guy can buy.
I heard rFactor2 and Automobilista 2 are similar in accuracy but i havent tested them yet.
The F1 game physics is way too basic. The cars can take huge bumps without getting thrown into a wall (e.g. Baku turn 15). Also small lockups dont really loose you time, whilst in reality if you lock one wheel into austria turn 3, you go really wide into the runoff area. In addition, as it has been mentioned in a lot of comments here, the tracks on the F1 game are partly not even close to reality (Spa Francorchamps is the most inaccurate one imo).
In terms of car setup the game is massive bullshit. Some changes dont even matter and you can drive insanely aggressive setups (you basically have to in high skill leagues), without destroying your tires completly. Also the options are very limited. That being said I dont mind a basic setup system for beginners, but for experienced drivers, they should implement an advanced setup tab. The tires in this game are super unrealistic as well. They can take so much beating and they dont even care. You can drive 100% of the race at full pace without thinking about saving your tires (on most tracks). Also they dont really overheat or start to blister, have flatspots etc. I used to play iRacing a lot in LMP2 and GT3 class endurance racing, and if you go at 100% pace all the time, you will have significant wear on your tires at the later stages of your stint and you can loose up to multiple seconds per lap.
Also track and air temps dont really matter in the F1 game, but I always check the temps in iRacing to know, how much grip I approximately can get and how fast I can warm up the tires or how fast I could overheat them.
