As we turn our eyes to Mars, one concept is starting to get more attention - the Mars Cycler. A ship that remains in permanent orbit between Mars and Earth, providing a constant exchange between the two planets and using only gravity assists as fuel. And it was devised by the one and only Buzz Aldrin.

Michael Collins is ALWAYS being overlooked. Thank you Michael, for everything. Rest in Peace
Literally the most isolated human being in history
Not in Ireland, we'll always remember him.
I wonder if Michael Collins was not the braviest of them all. He knew he won't touch the Moon himself, so nobody will be asking him 'how it is on the Moon?' However what he knew was that Neil and Buzz are supposed to launch from the Moon using engine that was small solid booster. Those can be fired only once and cannot be stopped later. For that reason those engines were not tested, as starting them means using them up. And there was no secondary backup one. If that engine failed, Michael was supposed to tell them "We are so proud of you guys" and head back to Earth alone, as nothing else he could do. Living the rest of his life remembering this.
Yet he overlooked the creator of the Lunar Orbit Rendezvous flight regime, John Houbolt, and gave that title to buzz.
Michael?
Australia without air. True fact!
From Aus here, just held my breathe as long as I could, can confirm space-like affects
Nah, more chance of finding life on Mars. Same pics though. Let me assure you though, there is no appeal in going to any Mars-like place.
So, space has no air and no culture? Iain M. Banks would be disappointed. At least there will be oceans of crap beer.
more people die from guns in usa in one day than 100 years of animals in australia
So . . . “A 5 year mission, to explore space, the final frontier, to boldly go where no one has gone before?” What bizarre concept. It’ll never catch on . . . 😉✌️
That sigh was perhaps the most Joe thing i've ever seen. This was cool new info Joe. I saw the movie stowaway, but had no idea about the history behind it.

Fun fact. Michael Collins wasn't bothered that the other astronauts seemed to be more famous than him. He said that if I failed in my calculations and failed to bring them back to the command module thus failing to bring them all home. Then I would have become more famous for obviously all the wrong reasons.🚀
Buzz Aldrin is one of my heroes. I got to meet him, briefly, when he came to Salt Lake City a few years ago. What a guy.
I would have thought the same, until Elon Musk revealed that most of the Apollo astronauts (including Buzz Aldrin) were against the Commercial Crew program and believed SpaceX would fail. I hate them all now.
@@ghostthough7874 Fair enough. Thankfully people can have different opinions than me and I still appreciate their contributions to science and the world. :)
“It could happen!” God you had me cracking up
Yeah, I really got that one! (for those who don't know, Joe has been aspiring to make his own movie. I think he is really successful in his own way, even if his dream from when he was younger has not really come to fruition, yet).

My favorite thing about Buzz was the time he punched that "moon landing was faked" guy in the face.
Only appropriate response.
Dude didn't risk his life and make arguably the greatest human achievement in our history thus far, just to get called a faker.
@@ElectronFieldPulse Well- there would be quite a few as appropriate responses than to punch him in the face, but they would become more and more illegal as I'd list them, I guess.
And I normally am close to being a pacifist...
@@alexandergaus493 - I think it makes people mad because of the insane amount of effort and sacrifice which Americans resent being called fake. He is lucky most people aren't violent. I can't see a judge coming down on someone like Buzz either, I would say not guilty in a second, lol
@@ElectronFieldPulse That's basically what the judge DID say. Buzz and his wife were getting out of a car. The creep got right up in Buzz's face. Buzz tried to step around him and the creep began to berate him and Buzz finally got sick of it and decked him.
Fun fact: I directed a feature film several years ago. It was pretty terrible, but it did get a distribution deal. It ended up in the DVDs under $5 bin at Walmart, got some buys on basic cable, and 3.5 stars while it was on Netflix so it apparently was appreciated by "some". However, I've never seen a single penny from it... I did learn a very important lesson in business though, so that's good I guess. Anyway, never give up on your dreams, just be careful who you collaborate with on said dreams! I believe in you.

Greatest quote of the 21th century “Space is like Australia without air - Joe Scott” this one is outlasting our lifespans! Love it!!!
The big advantage of a cycler, apart from artificial gravity, is the extra internal room and radiation shielding that is possible. People could live on one permanently, becoming the first "spacers".
The Mars ship in the Martian is also based on the cycler's idea. It even also use ion-drive.
Yeah Hermes. It made a lot of sense because it has all these living quarters and storage capacity that you wouldn't want to launch 5 times. Though it seems they only used the cycle method just to get Watney. They otherwise parked it in orbit.
Sideway fact: there were a soaceship spotted in the Expanse tv show, which was called "Mark Watney" =)
It's not a cycler though? Slows down into orbits around earth and Mars.
Nope, they worked around it via invention of "Epstien Drive", just really efficient and fast drive, not a warp one - they try to be as grounded, as possible.
You can give the show a chance - in fact, it's a first show I've seen, where fire in vaccum is spherical, they also make actors hairstyle "higher", cause, you know, no gravity.
But they also not overutilizing weghtlessness, as they're imitating gravity while accelerating/ decelerating, and because of that, compartments in the ship are perpendicular to the ship body
Ummm is this the Gandalf I know ?
If It is you know who I am
R.I.P. Michael Collins. Far too often overlooked in his Apollo contribution, while already contributing massively to Irish independence. Truly a Great Man.
When I was a kid, I always to thought that moon landing happened a very long time ago. But as I grew up I learned that all these great people are still alive. Rest in Peace Michael Collins.
My all time favorite Buzz moment was when he punched Bart Sibrel in the mouth. A classic.
True, it touched a sensible cord.
At the age of 72. Outstanding!
Even though I think the whole Mars colony concept is pure fantasy, I love Buzz for refusing to be disrespected by that guy.
@@MrScrofulous I would disagree that the concept is pure fantasy, and instead suggest that it's hopelessly impractical. I think if these billionaires keep ramping things up and dumping the money into it, a colony is totally feasible. The question is, why? I can think of so many scenarios, and none of them end well. The argument about colonizing Mars because of global warming would be hilarious if it wasn't so frightening to hear people with so much power demonstrating such a severe lack of the basics of what they're trying to do. If you can't solve global warming, you will never "Terraform" a planet. "Terraform" the Sahara first, if not just to prove the concept. Anyway, with the current technology, the value of any resources that could be acquired on Mars would pale in comparison to the cost of getting them. It's a pipe dream that has a frighteningly high likelihood of being prematurely attempted in our lifetime with what will likely be catastrophic results.
@@neonsashimidream1075 yeah the idea that we cant fix our environment but we can create an entirely new one on a different planet is such a misunderstanding of our actual problem and the logistics of everything.

Yes, you need most of the fuel to leave earth, but when using a cycler there is much less mass (only the taxi) that needs to leave earth. So you will save a lot of fuel.
hate to be a nitpicker but the proper term should be weight is much less, while the mass is decreased it would be more impactful to say weight, but yes you're correct

So good to have you back! I never realized what a big role you played in my Monday routine untill you took the month off.
Thanks for the awesome content Joe!
Thank you! Very exciting. First time learning of the Buzz Cycler Conveyor.
The biggest benefit for the cycler would be probably that it could provide bigger living quarters because the mass and volume could be put in space with multiple starships and only the payload needed to be accelerated every time.
yeah it's like the main point, I wonder why Joe did not mention that. A cycler could literally be a huge O'Neil cilinder, yet you will only need as much fuel for a martian mission as you would need to send only the crew.
Imagine what tremendous amount of fuel it would take to send such a cilinder on a trip to Mars using classic transfer orbits.
Yep.. two things Starship needs!
Spin gravity and more internal space for more cargo and crew!
czcams.com/video/Gz2_kREYMp4/video.html
And getting it into the proper orbit could take as long as it needs to, and only once that's accomplished take on passengers.
@@D_Rogers I think the Starship is in its first generation and once Musk starts putting people on Mars he’s going to start creating cyclers to have a constant migration of people.
@@KRYMauL Yes, I think having a few cyclers running would make Mars seem less isolated too. The trip there and back would be more comfortable and therefore open to a bigger variety of people.
Starships would still be needed to get people to and from the cyclers.
Building cyclers shouldn't be any more difficult than building a space station, it's just docking half a dozen custom starships together to form an axle and spokes. Then dock some colony ships to that... :)
Your sponsorship slot was well played and entertaining. I think more creators should go for this style as some are very dry. Keep up the great work,

Fun Fact: Buzz figured when returning from the surface of the Moon that they had enough fuel to do a faster rendezvous with the Command Module than was planned. RIP, Michael Collins. Anyone reading this, if you haven't read Michael Collins book, Carrying the Fire, you should. Also, the Ron Howard documentary, In the Shadow of the Moon. Both are well worth the time.
I've heard the book is great, I need to find it. I'll check the movie. Thanks for the tip!
Best idea I’ve heard yet!
First of all: Great to have you back. Hope the algorithm won’t be too furious. One thing you got wrong is the fuel savings: You actually never save fuel by using a cycler. So there’s no reason to use it for cargo.
Instead the main reason to use a cycler is to have a bigger space for the crew.
To me, the big advantage is having a much larger transit vehicle for the long trip. It still has to be accelerated initially, but then it is available for use. Cargo doesn't care about having a larger living space or spin-induced gravity. If the shorter transit times for direct transfer orbit are desirable enough to put up with less space, then cyclers aren't going to happen. Personally, I think the advantages of more space and other luxuries (that are only justified by accelerating once and then using over and over again) make cyclers attractive. I had not considered the benefit of putting the higher initial investment in place that then has a fairly long useful life.
That's a good point, you could see it like first class vs economy travel. If you want to get to Mars on the cheap, take the cycler. Want to get there faster and can pay for it? Direct route.
@@joescott I'm sorry it's not like that
How he got stuck in the wires and they had to unscrew the panel made me pass this movie

A five year stint as a crew member would be maddening. Seeing the same few people everyday for five years. Not to imagine coming back to a world that more or less jumped five years forward without you there.
I think that idea of entering a bubble and then finding that everything has changed may well just be one of the most challenging things from a psychological standpoint. The idea that you could spend years going between...unless we get ftl comms, I can see people going a bit nuts.
I'm not very knowledgeable about these topics, but would the speeds of travel be fast enough for the pilots to effectively "time travel" and be gone longer than 5 years based on the perspective of we Earth-bound folk?
@@b0xf0x13 They would have to be moving REALLY fast for a noticeable difference in passage of time.
@@b0xf0x13 No, not that fast.

Musk is firmly attached to the government tit. It’s not getting cheaper. Payload managers are complaining how load costs are up and up. Your dreaming if you think the purse strings can’t be cut. We have options.
@@jonathanedwardgibson Both of you are off. SpaceX needs to get government contracts, but Starship is an order of magnitude cheaper.
@@gljames24 Right, SpaceX needs the government contracts, thus far, once Star Link is up and running, that's no longer true, but thus far, SpaceX needs the contracts, but is also the cheapest option, so as long as the government doesn't wanna waste money, they also need SpaceX.

I believe that the classic "Golden Age" science fiction short story "The Cold Equations" was the actual inspiration for the Netflix show/movie "Stowaway".
I have been a big proponent of this concept ever since I heard Aldrin explain it years ago. The best thing about it is that it sets up a permanent infrastructure in space; always available for whatever manned space mission we get around to funding.
Something similar happens today (except for covid-19). Goods are transported slowly and efficiently by ship while people are transported by air. Merchant ship fleets tend to operate like a conveyor belt. Excellent video and now I'm going to buy some Mack Weldons
It's important to mention that the lunar rendezvous concept was crazy because A RENDEZVOUS HAD NEVER BEEN DONE BEFORE. They didn't even think it was possible! I study the topic and formation flying in space is COMPLICATED, you can't just thrust towards the target and expect to get closer, actually, sometimes doing that makes you go FARTHER AWAY! Buzz only knew it was possible because he literally did his phd dissertation on rendezvous.
