Pentax users! There's dozens of us! Dozens!
Haha! And we are all in the same retirement home... 🤣 🤣 🤣
C'm on, don't get carried away with these inflated numbers.
Lmao
And fewer all the time. I just pulled the trigger on an A7III. I've been a Pentax shooter forever, but the charm of their anachronism has finally faded for me, personally.
Kai’s positivity and humor is just radiant. I basically watch 90% for his personality and 10% for the cameras LOL
10/10 agree
He reviews cameras?
😂😂
@@PaulAmyes 😂😂😂😂
I also reference his review for stuff I’m gonna buy, but usually just watching Kai be informative and funny reviewing a camera I probably wouldn’t buy.
the Pentax menu system is the most user friendly I ever used
Ive never used anything besides canon so i would like to know how they compare. Ive actually thought about switching to pentax.
Yes, coz its pentax
It's funny because in high school I was told that Nikon was the most user friendly. I kept having issues navigating the menus of the D-40, D-50, and D-90. I could never turn off the flash and I hated it. When I bought my Pentax K-r, it was so self explanatory on how to do everything and dude at Best Buy was saying how Pentax isn't as user friendly. I'm still confused as to what their definition of user friendly is.
@@yungdree9249 I couldn‘t agree more
@@thelegendrubyrodd got both system, I definitely prefer Pentax over Canon
"More features than Boris has kids!" Haha
Keep doing your thing, Pentax. This one's a beaut.
I love Pentax, and I'm happy they finally improved the focusing system. But I'll need to wait when they apply these improvements to their full frames before I upgrade.

I bought my K3 for $125 in 2017 at a pawnshop that didn’t know what they had.
I had to sell my k3 to a pawnshop in 2017 with the tamron 16-50 f2.8. got like 100 bucks :(
@@tornater5403 Why didn't you eBay it, or sell it to a used camera store.

Ended up getting a k70 and k1 in the following two years so it worked out.
People should understand the Pentax system. If you´re a person who likes to create content and post whatever thing you do on social media, this system ISN´T for you. Not everything is done for content creators and youtube/social media fanatics. Pentax cameras are designed for people who focus on outdoor/adventure photography such as landscapes, street photos, and wildlife as well. It gives you the confidence to go and take photos without taking into account the weather and your sorroundings. Once you use a Pentax camera, you´ll notice that the feeling/experience is unique and different from other brands. Their built-quality is overwhelming in every single body they produce. A clear optical viewfinder and a solid-built body cannot be compared. The image quality and the color science of Pentax cameras are incredible (DR is excellent). I was an original Nikon shooter and I changed the system to Pentax and I´m glad I did. I have tried mirrorless cameras and having in my hands a Sony, Canon, Fuji, even Panasonic, don´t feel the same. If you haven´t tried a system, please save your criticisms. The system is just not meant for you. One thing I agree with is the price tag of this body. It´s definitely too high.
"Their built-quality is overwhelming in every single body they produce."
Say this to users of K50, K-30, K-70 with failed selenoid in aperture block.
Say this to users of lenses driven by unreliable SDM mechanism.
@@paweszkup647 unfortunately you have a point there. I have a K5II and several sdm lenses that aren't working well. So I'm seriously considering switching to Fuji since I'd be buying a new 16-50 along with the K3 III anyways.
@@paweszkup647 Mine got the aperture block failure too but at the time it happened most cameras would already been long dead! The K-5 is a tank, the K-3 a little less but they still work and i am somehow very abrasive ...
@Mickey Mouse I agree, that nowadays all products suffer some quality problems. But it means, that Pentax is nothing special (OK, the price is speclal ;-))
I've been with Pentax for almost 25 years but decided recently not to invest any single penny into Pentax gear any more.
@Mickey Mouse You are so right on, it is scary. I am a long time Pentax user too. Although I have had zero failures in my gear, I am thinking ahead too. I got two Fuji cameras (for video) mostly but need to combine into one system. My K1 is a tank and has been super reliable. I hate to part with my "Three amigos." If Pentax is going by the way of the Dodo bird, perhaps this is the time to let the stuff go and go to a system that is not going anywhere (read Fuji, Sony, Canon).
DSLRs aren't dead, neither this channel! Keep up the great content as always! ^_^
As a Cinematographer and Pentaxian, I do shoot video with Pentax, and am glad they've re-enabled the mechanical IBIS instead of the awful software MovieSR we've been stuck with since the K-5 finished. Did you plug in an external recorder and see what that worked like? Hopefully they've corrected the errors of the past, where the HDMI would change resolution and frame rate when you pressed record on the body.
Did the kp do that
@@unbroken1010 No.
It was available on the K-5's, then switched off for every body after, with us Video-Centric people calling for it to be re-enabled. Lack of Mechanical IBIS is why I haven't updated from my K-01's (which salespeople assumed had IBIS, not MovieSR).
Pentax reps had claimed it was not possible to add it in firmware, which was an outright lie, as in Stills-Liveview-AllwaysOn for the IBIS, it could be seen in effect on the rear screen, but only for Stills, so it was already there, and they didn't want to allow it in Video.
Or, if you meant "Did the KP do that to HDMI?" then, Yes, every body with HDMI has major issues with the HDMI output being botched - the K-01 turns to Playback Only Mode when a HDMI cable is plugged in, the K-1, K-3 and KP all do the resolution/framerate change when the record button is pressed on the camera.
@@PiDsPagePrototypes well thank you for the knowledge so I guess the best thing to do is just to stick with the 1080p in camera and use it conservative. . not to expect much more from it.. so weird so can you hook up a monitor and still get to see Stills in live view?
@@PiDsPagePrototypes can I turn of the movie sr setting on the k5 2 is that what you're recommending I'm a little new at the videoography thing
awesome video as always!! Thanks Kai

Man this guys just makes your day. 👍
I love Pentax 😍
Does it have halfway usable video ?
DSLRs are better than mirrorless IMO. Although I have two mirrorless cameras, I still have most of my fun with my D7200. It's great to walk around all day with the camera on and not have to change batteries all the time. It could also be the Tamron 18-400mm lens I bought for it and have yet to take it off. All day long with almost any composition I want. Photography is still fun. I've never been blessed with a Pentax camera, but it looks like I'd like this one.
Yep, DSLRs aren't dead yet! The advantages of mirrorless are real, but for the joy of photography many of us will always prefer looking through an OVF, and hearing that wonderful DSLR shutter sound. I prefer Pentax, but I am sad Canon and Nikon are leaving the DSLR market.
I...actually quite like it! I already have a K-1, but this is tempting too...
Reason that dslrs are better than mirrorless = way better battery life , clean bright optical viewfinders, feeling in the hand - body design , the mirror fliping sound makes you feel you hold a tool in your hand not a toy. Cudos to Pentax once again.
Reasons why mirrorless better than DSLR:
EVF
Small batteries to carry
Fast AF; Good AF tracking
Many FPS
4k (for who's interested)
Gorgeous image quality
Depending on the manufacturer, great lenses, modern one that can handle the resolutions
Lightweight
Modern
Anything else?
@@UrSSuL OVF > EVF anytime anyday
You carry ''small'' batteries i cary 1 inside the camera..
Fast AF of the allready fast AFs of recent DSLRS? not needed
Who cares about so many FPS?
4K is also available for DSLRS many years now...
Image quality is directly dependant to the vast options for DSLR lenses with fewer elements and glass.
Lightweight? You meant front heavy disfuctional - unpleasant shooting
Modern= gimmicky plastic?
I want cameras that can withstand the use or even abuse and not afraid of breaking apart.
@@NikosPer big brands DSLR' s already have good 4k, great AF, great lenses, etc. . Pentax, not a chance.
Lightweight as in Mg alloy bodies with rubber but being smaller volumes = smaller weight.
Never have I had problems with batteries, nor were they heavy to carry, nor to pop them in the multiple slots chargers. But if that's a breaking point in your photography cicle, by all means, stick to what helps you achieve it.
EVF> OVF because if you have old AF systems like Pentax, the focus hunt will make you miss shots. Plus, you see something close to the end result and can decide if you click. Modern? Yes. But it's ok not to like it. Old people tend to become grumpy when faced with progress ('back in my day' nonsense) .
@@UrSSuL I dont consider progress to make a lens ,for example RF 70-200 without iner zooming , making the flagships tend to gather dust and moisture - asking huge prices for their backward ''innovation'', i dont consider progress to make front heavy camera systems with small bodies and huge lenses that are uncomfortable in real world shooting and Yes i dont consider progress when i have to stop and change batteries at 300 shots !!! or because i left the camera on in case i need it. I am not pro neither old but i like the true and trusted with many options in the used or new market and prices on check. As for the ''see something close to the end result and can decide if you click'' i mostly shoot right away and ask questions later , its all about the moment.
@@NikosPer
It isn' t 'innovation' to make lenses that can make use of the new sensors with the tons of MPx they keep bringing, it' s just common business sense (Pentax deeply lacks) .
K5/ 3 (whatever you want) was also heavy on the front with any lens above around 550 grams (Try shooting a whole day with the Samyang 85mm F1.4) , and a length of over 20cm's (you know, change in center of gravity) . You can argue with me, but I had such set- up and it was just a pain to shoot with as it is with my Sony.
Pentax k3 body weight 821 gr. vs. A7 RII 625 gr. . Less than 200grams difference. Considering the fact that some get side straps for the Pentax, guessing it works for the Sony. Not a huge negative, as a camera' s feature stand in the main things that facilitate you taking photos and are standards (specific to each era) . Nowadays is MPX' s that can be put into use (good lenses) , with AF that is sharp and tacky, FPS (for action shooters) , ruggedness (for landscappers or city/ rain shooters) , 4k Shooting (for some) , some sort of stabilization (body ideal, lenses a minimum) . Then, the other secondaries come, some of which you've mentioned, the likes of ergonomics, battery life, menu user friendliness, extra feature like wireless remote, live streaming, etc. .
Pentax fails at the main ones with the exception of ruggedness (IBIS is not a Pentax thing anymore) , when compared to the competition, the main goal of the main features being taking good (Sensor always or 2 generations behind for Pentax) and sharp photos (sharp lenses with stabilization) when you want (not the crappy hunting Pentax AF) . The secondaries are a plus, but don't get you main market share. Fanboys can cry all they want, the profits show a different story.
The most I managed to shoot with a battery was 680 shots (new battery, original) . Rarely did I shoot in one go. I always charged before the shoot, sometimes after. 200 extra grams (a battery) wouldn't stop me from buying the cameraI have now, to get close to the (secondary) feature of shooting 600 or more photos that Pentax has.
I want one. No joke!
Me too
Is it full-frame?

Ideal, a new Pentax. Great stuff. Looks good.
Pentax don’t have mirrorless tech, or the budget to convert their lenses?
Probably wise of Pentax. Nikon have bankrupted themselves trying to keep up with Sony and Canon in the mirrorless mud fight.
Damn, I actually really like this pentax. Can they put that geeky retro menu system in the GR series?
@@mcmurrox Huh, I never saw all those colour display readouts!

Actually, it was paired with the excellent DA*11-18. Not that Kai would've appreciated this, but ...
Been a dedicated Ricoh/Pentax user since the mid-80s. Definitely considering this model for my next buy...
Nice headline there! Someone saw Tony Northup's vid I see 😏👌👌
I remember when Kai mocked the Pentax K-1 which still is a very good camera for photographers. The Pentax K-1 is still the only SR IBIS FF DSLR camera in the world, and for most people, the camera is great even today. The Pentax K-3 III is to be the best APS-C SR IBIS DSLR camera in the world thanks to its excellent OVF. Bravo Pentax.
A7 RII has IBIS. You ok? Who needs DSLR when you can pair a camera with a Zeiss line- up?
@@UrSSuL A7RII has IBIS but A7RII is Not a DSLR camera. Some People Prefer OVF to EVF. And I use Leica-R lenses on my Pentax K-1 with success... You ok???
@@teikiarii1635 and you can use any lens mount (close to, I can't state 100 percent 'any') on the Sony' s with adapters that have focus peeking and focus confirmation.
So, are you OK stating that Pentax 'is something worth taking into consideration' based on your upper mentioned points?
Some people also preffered to write with sticks into the sand as opposed to chalk, but here we are now.
What you prefer, is good for you, but overall, Pentax is in the past.
@@UrSSuL You are right about the Sony's mount but I do not like EVF, especially the A7RII's which is a retina killer. Nevertheless, just get what you like according to your needs. I got my Pentax K-1 five years ago, and I am still very happy with it. besides, you do not need to buy all lenses of all brands in the world to take photos. The Pentax' lenses are very good for most of pictures for mos of photographers. The last released digital camera of the last released marketing skills doesn't make you a better photographer. Best regards.
@@teikiarii1635 Pentax Lenses are barely OK for today's sensors (their top ones) .
If you can live with all the minuses of this brand, good for you. However (not stating you in particular) statements like 'd500 killer' or d800 or whatever are worthless, as even 7 years after their competitors were released, they still can't win, sometimes they 'win' by 1% (k1 sensor over d800, after 3 years) , and mostly barely managed to play catch.
Be grounded and admit that the camera brand is using old technology in the present and that shows through their market share.
Just "pre-ordered" a silver one. I'm still happy with my pair of KP's... but I did it anyway! Couldn't stop myself, because my mouse totally went rogue. Dang, there goes $2K :/
It's early, but this camera surely will end up as one of 2021's best.
best dslr!.. & the only))
@@olegki6288 finally, Pentax managed to get the title. Mirrorless, next (20 years of slowly catching up, until the big boys switch to holograms eye snapping projections) .
@@UrSSuL meh. Mirrorless is the World's Most Overrated Thing™ I'd much rather have a DSLR. And besides, at the rate we're going, the metering sensors (which are literal smartphone-size image sensors now) are going to be in the tens of megapixels with on-chip PDAF, so not only will you be able to do eye tracking, face detection, etc. through the viewfinder, but you'll also have full-blown hybrid AF with points all over the frame, and no PDAF array in the mirror box, nor the secondary mirror for it, which means less moving parts, faster continuous shooting, less blackout time, and greater mechanical reliability all at the same time.
And all this without having to look at a ghastly digital display, too. It'll be done through a *real* viewfinder. In a not-crazy world, that would mean lights-out for mirrorless... of course, we don't live in a not-crazy world, so...
Is the Live view autofocus any good ?
I stopped at the K1 with Pentax (just tested it, and it focused hunted without hope) , and if I remember right, Pentax's approach on AF is sort of like Internet Explorer's approach to internet. Slow, 3 steps behind everyone, and lack luster. So I wouldn't expect them to be even to pair with the last DSLR' s from the big boys. Maybe they're in 2016 with it.

It is positively gorgeous though.
You already strayed. You looked at it. Seed is planted, you'll get it eventually. We all know it.
Kai you love a Pentax! :)
I think there's a reason Kai released this video on April 1st.
My xpro3 has an optical viewfinder...technically speaking anyway.
I shoot a lot of film, and in that film, I use mostly waist-level viewfinders. I enjoy the tilty screen on both my X-T30 and X-pro3 for that style of shooting. I'm just not really missing the optical viewfinder even still shooting a ton of film over digital for "important" work. I use the OVF on my x-pro3 a bit, but mostly it's set to EVF with better manual focus aids (I use adapted lenses from my film gear collection mostly, why spend extra when I have great glass already even if it's all manual).
"that joystick 'nipple-thing'" got me off guard

Other than IBIS, does it do anything better or special that the D500 doesn’t?

@@carltanner9065 pentax can't be submerged in water and then work again (not if you actuate the mirror and create movement in the lenses for water to seep in) .
Well, guess what, I've done just that and nothing happened to the camera or lens. If you have the weather sealed lenses, the camera is quite capable of handling a dunking. I still loved the feel of the K5. It made me want to take pictures. Put an old K mount manual lens on the front and have some fun. Plus SLR's always felt more "get on with the next shot" -ness. OK; the sensor may still be busy. But the optical viewfinder is back in business and you can see what you're doing sooner. However . . . the damned thing was always off for repair. A main PCB causing the mad battery problem and TWO sensors because the optical stabilization system packed up - TWICE. I am sure they have probably sorted it. But it all cost as much as the original body. After 18 years of lugging Canon bodies around without a glitch; it kinda put me off. I loved the Pentax. But like all good love stories; sometimes you gotta give it up.
isn't pentax the only company out there to have actual pentaprism in there aps-c bodies?
It is, if tou rule out Nikon and Canon of course.

I really hope DSLRs don't die off, their design and feel makes me want to go out and take photos. A mirrorless just feels like something you take holiday snaps with, it takes the joy out of photography.
Yeah. That’s exactly why I want this guy. It’s the only dslr that is great and not super old. Dslr and film cameras make you want to run around and take a ton of photos.

This is the best DSLR crop sensor camera on the market and it isn't even close.
This cameras reminds me the full frame a-mount SLT Sony a-99 II of 2016. An expensive very powerful full frame camera of a dead lens mount.
Pentax not only is going to be the last camera manufacturers to introduce a new dSLR camera but was the last manufacturer to enter the full frame dSLR market in 2016 with the original K1.
Anyway what differentiates Pentax dSLR cameras from other manufacturers is their great waterproof construction and general robust.
Pentax like Minolta had a great history during the film era but with the advent of dSLR technology they were overshadowed by Canon and Nikon.
Minolta-Konica was smart enough to be bought early by Sony in 2016 and the Minolta a7, a9 cameras and the Minolta G and GM lenses are surviving as Sony a7, a9 cameras and Sony G and GM lenses. Minolta cameras were named Alpha in Japan (Maxxum in America, Dynax in Europe) and are still survive by Sony Alpha α series of cameras.
Ever heard about Pentax MZ-D? "last manufacturer" 🤣
I hope the 1.6 million iso is not too much marketing. At least it has two or more step cleaner iso vs competitor like R6, Z6, etc.
apparently ISO 12800 on the K-3 iii is equivalent to ISO 3200 on the K-1 mark ii. No kidding! I saw it in one of the K-3 iii videos.

An optical viewfinder and no motion lag.
It's just too expansive to price such thing in same price as A7 III or a Fuji XT4 with 18-55. I have to say that this Pentax has its own well-thoughts and solid experience, but it's price tag is just a no brainer for any new photographers or professionals to just pick this up while undertaking the lure of Sony, Canon, Nikon, or even Fujifilm.
Yeah, like this is quite appealing to me since I kinda miss the robustness of a dslr when using my xt4, but at $2000 I'd probably get a Nikon D750 for full frame, and it has lovely photo quality too
