I forgot to mention that I took the melting point and found to be 68-70 C. The literature MP is 77-78 but OrgSyn says that occasionally a lower melting form is obtained which melts at 71-72.

2:20 try to avoid the use of time lapse when the frame isn’t perfectly stable, the time lapse amplified the amount of shaking appeared to be . a triple can be really useful when it comes to doing time lapse, good chemistry as always, keep it up.

I’m assuming that you can limit the thickness of the rxn mixture by diluting it in ethanol maybe?
can i just distil off excess ethyl benzoate without applying vacuum? that is, distil under atmospheric pressure.
Could you use MEK instead of acetophenone?
You could use methyl benzoate and methoxide too right?
Yeah, that should be fine. I only used the ethyl ester because I was running low on methanol at the time of synthesis. Usually I prefer the cheaper methyl alcohol.
Why the low yield? This is supposed to be a very robust reaction.
Probably poor mixing. The reaction mixture became very thick and my coat hanger wire was not very effective.
