    How to find good reference images:
    Learn the medical name for things which will help you to find clearer, better reference images instead of other people's makeup. So using 'laceration' instead of cut, 'ballistic trauma' instead of bullet hole, etc. I will often google image search but that can come up with -horrible- results so be careful, start out small.
    I also follow accounts that show good reference images and the discussion behind what happened, so people like mrs_angemi or medicaltalks on instagram, or makeup fx reference image groups on Facebook. I also like going on the Figure 1. app (like instagram for medical professionals) and you can search by body part or key words to find stuff on there too.

  • @Freakmo
    @Freakmo  Před 7 lety +530

    Another couple of tips:
    1. Get yourself a good mattifying creme, then if your wax/latex/silicone/gelatine/whatever looks too shiny you can mattify it to match your skin so it doesn't stand out as being fake or different from your surrounding skin.
    2. Avoid spirit gum if you can, that stuff is evil. My favourite adhesive is prosaide, I don't think it's any more expensive than spirit gum.
    3. Also another beginner mistake - thinking it will work the first time you try it. Most of my first attempts aren't great or what I want. With this kind of makeup you usually need to practice, don't expect to be an expert the first time you try, and don't be discouraged by failures - it's how you learn!
    4. yes there are two number sevens in the video my bad.

    • @Freakmo
      @Freakmo  Před 7 lety +1

      Yeah I use prosaide for my bald caps, and then prosaide cream (so a bit thicker) for around the edges if they're not blending out nicely / there's a visible edge)

    • @aj32769
      @aj32769 Před 7 lety +1

      Freakmo can you explain why you wouldn't recommend spirit gum?

    • @Freakmo
      @Freakmo  Před 7 lety +19

      As an adhesive it doesn't have the best... adhesion, and it has a strong and unpleasant smell. But the main reason I dislike it is because of the ether in it. It's quite common to feel like it's burning when it goes onto the skin, and if the ether hasn't fully evaporated before adhering something on top, the ether can get trapped and cause chemical burns on people's skin. So kinda unpleasant ingredients that make a lot of people's skin react to it. Prosaide is great, it's acrylic/water based and really gentle.

They use liquid latex and tissue paper to create wounds, and then the finished look is soo anatomically incorrect and mishapen that they end up dousing it in fake blood to make it look even remotely real! This video must be seen by everyone! Youre our only hope freakmo !

    • @kayluh1681
      @kayluh1681 Před 7 lety +41

      Witte Artistry when it comes to blood, a lot of times less is more. Like I never could understand why some people spend forever trying to make a realistic wound, and adding a ton of detail just to ruin all of that work by drowning it in blood. In the end you have spent hours on a wound just to achieve something you could have done in a few minutes. Major pet peeve of mine, lol.

    • @SimulationTek
      @SimulationTek Před 7 lety +11

    +Freakmo dish soap works good but...If you want to keep it mouth safe a good tip is use soap you use in your mouth daily. Toothpaste. I find it does the same thing & the cheapest one work the best.

      Yeah I've never tried adding that actually but I heard Rob Smith's interview on Battle with Bits of Rubber and he said that's a common additive to bloods, which is why some of them taste minty (I'm looking at you, Mouldlife)

    as somebody who wants to do some minor fx makeup for upcoming Halloween, this was more informative than the "tutorial" videos that just basically shows speed progression of how the artist did their make up and just listed the materials they used in the descriptions. you, on the other hand, made sure to list do's and don'ts as well as list a margin of safety when it comes to beginner fx work. so thank you! :>

      Look at anatomy references, surgery videos(ed heads, CZcams, etc. not too nasty as it’s a clean scientific environment) or videos made by trauma doctors (explaining healing process/body’s response to traumatic injuries, anatomy, and likely be less disturbing than say a picture of a body or critically injured person in a car accident, or a murder scene.)
      You can also just research the skin, especially if it pertains to yourself or your model.

    thank you so much for this video. i'm sad to say that yes i have made a few of these mistakes. i am teaching myself and just assumed that following the bigger makeup channels was the best way to learn. i have recently started to do my own research. with that and being busy with college my makeup practice has gone on the back burner but thanks to this video i am going to try and do better makeup from reference pictures of real wounds. heres hoping i don't get too squeamish lol. a look i need to do soon for my film college course is black tears so i am hoping i can find some good reference material. also can you recommend a good thing to use for black tears? as i don't want to use anything bad next to mine or anyone else's eyes.

    @TaraNGerritsen Před 5 lety +1

    Love this advice! There's one thing I disagree with though, and that's the part of not just following tutorial videos, but trying to design something yourself. While it's definitely true that you need to let go of copying and start designing on your own if you want to get really good, just following tutorials is the best way to learn how anatomy, materials, and designs work, especially if you're an absolute beginner.
    Obviously don't go posting other people's designs all over social media without their approval and properly crediting them, but also don't be ashamed of being in the learning stage where you still have to be guided through the process step by step by someone who's more experienced. And that goes for pretty much everything you're trying to learn. I think people who are experienced at something tend to forget that while it's not acceptable to do if you're a (semi)professional, the imitation stage is as important to learning as knowing how to observe and eventually transitioning into designing it all by yourself.

    For the next Halloween season, I want to start simple, maybe a cut or slight tear in the skin, perhaps a scar. I want to try & achieve that "infected" look with just basic shadows. Eventually I can do bigger & deeper, more complicated wounds in the future but now I want to stick to super basic looks.
