You're the man Rob! I Just bought an 87 SEA RAY Serento. My first power trim boat. The up switch for the trim was not working. I took it apart, cleaned out the grease, sanded the contact points, put everything back together and low and behold the limit switch works perfectly now! So nice being able to use the up on the toggle switch instead of having to use the trailer switch!
I found grease on my contacts on the port switch. What I used to clean everything was Lionel (trains) track cleaning solution followed by using the Lionel track cleaning eraser. For somebody with model trains these 2 items were readily usable. Worked great. Thanks for the help.
THANK YOU! I am a new boat owner (2000 Stingray 180RS) and my up trim on the throttle stopped working but the trailer up worked fine and I was searching everywhere today looking on things to check. Did exactly what you said and cleaned the surfaces and inside of the unit with a microfiber rag thoroughly and it trims up now. Took less than 10 minutes. I’d buy you a beer if we ever crossed paths.
Thank you so much Rob, my boat has been stuck in the boat launch parking lot for about a week because the trim was stuck in the down position. Thanks to your video I just got it fixed and it was so easy. I spent hours working on the trim pump and was about to give up. If I wouldn’t have seen your video I would have had to cough up a large repair bill here at the lakes. The wait list was over a month and summer would have been over by then. I can’t thank you enough. Your video quite literally saved my summer.
Obviously, you understand this "limit switch" is actually a "potentiometer" (a variable resistor) that changes value as the I/O unit moves up and down. it works similar to the "old-time" volume control on a TV or radio. The moving contacts must maintain good electrical contact throughout its travel but grease or other contaminants will prevent good electrical contact. After disassembly, an "electrical contact cleaner" would be an excellent choice to clean any grease or contaminants. The same principle applies to the "trim indicator module" located on the opposite side of the bell housing. A $9.00 can of aerosol cleaner and a few minutes to disassemble these "hockey pucks" can save hundreds of dollars in replacement/installation costs. This is an excellent video showing how simple this repair can be. Thanks for posting.
Thanks when they originally made the video I found all sorts of videos on how to change the switch but none on how to repair it. I thought I'd post this is a public service lol
This was exactly my problem. trim worked down, and trailer but not up. did solenoid change and tested the wiring, but still nothing. Then cleaned out the trim limit switch and now trim up works like new. Thank you so much for this extremely helpful fix. It saved my sanity. :-)
I can’t say thank you enough. I bought my boat a 2000 stingray IO with 3.0 Mercury a few months ago & trim up would not work. I had to use the trailer up to plane my boat. I did exactly as you said & yes it was full of grease. I cleaned the copper contacts with scotchbright & sandpaper & it works perfectly. I’m so happy & thank you so very much. It literally was a 10-15 minute job. I’m soooo happy & again thank you 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏✌️😊
worked for me in June 2022! Thanks for sharing, I cleaned the contacts with muriatic acid and sand paper and then applied some waterproof grease to the o-rings. Only my trailer and trim down were working previously and now the trim up works perfect. Awesome video!
Thank you for your video. I troubleshot my trim up problem up to the limit switch and asked my boat guy to replace it but he was too busy. I checked on line to see if it was difficult to do it myself. I found your video and opened the cover only to find a bunch of grease and mud inside. I cleaned it up and it now works perfectly. Thanks again.
Best video if your having issues w/ mercruiser trim going up or down. Clean the switch first! That was my problem. Now goes up and down perfectly. There was obvious corrosion on my switch prior to cleaning on my 2001 boat Merc I/O 4.3 alpha one. This is the first time I have cleaned it. All it cost was paper towels sandpaper and 10 minutes of time. Trim works like new now in both directions. Thank you for your post!
I haven't had this problem but it's good to know. I had a trim pump solenoid issue last month and saw videos of people removing the pump to fix the problem. My nephew told me that before I do anything, unscrew the ground from the bracket and wire brush it. That saved me a ton of work, just a little corrosion had messed up my ground.
@@robbeam5599 Ps. Worked like a charm! I knew something weird was up when the trailer switch and the stern switch still worked! Thanks again. Rob Marcuzzol
Just tried this on my bayliner and it worked!!!!!!!!!!!!finally so awesome wish I would of seen this video before I replaced the trim switch and having it still not work lost out on 50 bucks but could of ben more if I took it to a mechanic so awesome get to take my boat out thanks alot man really appreciate it !!!!!!!!
Awesome video and awesome repair. Like most, I was thinking a sender replacement was in order but after watching your vid and then applying the repairs you showed........ it was a piece of cake! Thanks for a great fix and video.
This was the fix! After watching your video I checked it out. Could visibly see grease all over before taking it off. Cleaned it up and it works great now. Thanks!
The Grey part rotates as you raise and lower the leg . If it is not lining up your trim switch will no longer lift the leg . This is a safety thing. The trailer button can lift higher than the trim as it does not have a safety system . In short you must have lifted it with the trailer button which will lift beyond safe operating height . This is how it is supposed to work. Once you lower it a bit they will line up and hopefully all will be well.
Thank you, just so happen i recently greased the fitting, LOL , i was ready to try all this wire testing and look behind the trim switch etc... , glad i found your video...
Thank you very much for posting this. My trim up had just suddenly stopped working after I lowering the outdrive all the way to ground. Just a small thud.. I ran across your video while searching forums for troubleshooting ideas. Turns out some grease had finally gotten in there. I assume the bump on the ground, while not a real big deal, knocked some built up grease in there.
AWESOME! Thanks for this video. I had my throttle lever and switch apart checking for a broken wire. This solved my problem on my 87 searay seville bowrider.
Fantastically helpful video, worked for me and saved $1-2K. WOWSER!!! Now, do you have a fix for a trim tilt sensor that is on the other side of the outdrive unit. Mine is pinned together, and I can't figure how to open it. Do you have a fix???
Charlie1939 sorry to be so late my trim sensor is held together with 4 screws. I had to clean it up but it was much the same as the limit switch. My guess is yours is a sealed unit designed to be replaced not serviced. Sorry I'm not much help without actually seeing the part.
Can you describe what you mean? I can tell how the contacts would hit nothing if installed 90* off, is this what you mean? How should the contacts be if out drive is all the way down?
@@Proamatures I had mine trimmed all the way down and just made sure the markings were aligned as near the edge as I could and still working so when I want to trim up I'll get full range. Also my wires were pretty corroded In it as well and would not work sometimes so i removed the wire and added 12gwg wire in the unit.
I have the same motor on a 1992 Dixie 19’ ski boat. When in reverse The stern will start to go under water. Any ideas? I feel like the trim is too low thus it is pulling the stern down when in reverse. Not sure how to adjust the low trim limit. Thanks.

Thanks for the informative video. My trim works correctly but the indicator guage always shows it in the "UP" position. Do you have any idea what I should check first?
Mitch p. It's actually almost exactly the same if all your wiring is okay. Remove the cap on the opposite side of your leg and clean it up. You will have to adjust the cap on the leg by twisting it to the left or right so that the gauge on the dash board reads properly .
rob beam I looked at mine today and figured out really fast why it isn't working. The sensor has been removed and wires cut. No idea why the previous owner/owners would've done that.
Mitch p. People do weird things sometimes. Honestly I hardly ever look at my trim gauge. Basically I just go by how much my bow is bouncing and at what point of my boat the spray is flying off. Trim gauges and speedometers are two things that will drive you nuts because they are always breaking down.
Was just getting my boat ready for season after putting the battery in I could not get my engine to trim up or down first time this has ever happened to me, I will definitely try this, any other suggestions?
Musabe009 this isn’t always the case but I felt little bit embarrassed but I was missing a line on the battery that powers the trim 😂 I also had to push the high limit reset button been mint ever since I was thinking worse case but seemed to work out
After you clean it Put everything back exactly the way it was. The contacts rotate when the leg is raised or lowered. So it would depend on how high your leg is as to whether the contacts would touch or not. Applying a coat of dielectric grease is also a good idea to keep away corrosion. If for some reason you moved the bottom part of the switch Or want to double check You can set the maximum trim height By rotating the bottom piece to the position where the trim up button stops at the proper height. Depending on the year and model of your boat there is a maximum length for the hydraulic rams when using the trim up button. You would have to ask your local dealer For that information if you don't have a manual. The last thing you want to do is run your boat with the leg too high as it can damage the drive shaft.
Could this potentially fix an issue in which my trim intermittently stops working? Typically happens after a ride around the lake, I go to trim it back down all the way and the pump just hums and doesn’t move the leg down..
If the pump is humming it's getting power so it wouldn't be the limit switch. Are you physically looking at your leg or just the trim guage? If your guage is not working properly your leg may be moving but not showing on your guage. Other than that it could be a hydraulic problem.
Can you help me ? I went ahead and changed my trim limit switch. The switch only works after I get the motor about half way up with the trailer switch. It's the opposite of how it should be.
Without actually seeing it it's hard for me to tell. It is very important that you get it fixed if you accidentally lift your leg too high while running your motor you can damage your drive shaft. Off the top of my head I wonder if the switch was installed upside down or if it was possibly meant to be installed on the opposite side of the leg or maybe it's the wrong switch. I only really know how my model works. I would try putting the leg all the way down take the cap off and pull the little gray piece out that I show in the video then look at the two copper contactors and see if you can put it on in such a way that they make contact when the leg is all the way down. Once you get that figured out you'll need to set your travel you do that by loosening the screws and twisting the limit switch so that the hydraulic cylinders won't extend beyond the maximum travel for your model of leg . on mine I believe it's 15 in but don't quote me. You would have to ask a boat dealer if you don't have your owner's manual. Good luck sorry I couldn't be of more assistance without actually seeing it in person I'm not doing much more than guessing at what your problem is
What are the symptoms of this? When I press trim up I get nothing. If I press trailer it slowly goes up. My boat sat all winter, and now I have to stand on it to go down.
Benji Smith can you hear the hydraulic motor trying to work when you push those switches? You may be just low on fluid if the motor is working but nothing's happening. If it goes up with the trailer switch and down with the trim switch but will not rise with the trim up switch then it is probably the limit switch that the video shows you how to clean. The limit switch is there to prevent you from lifting your prop too high with the motor running. If you can't hear the motor running when you push the down button you may need to look into it some other wiring issues.
Benji Smith if the pump is trying your problems either going to be low fluid or your hydraulic pumps not working properly. If you follow the lines that lead from your trim cylinders they will lead to a pump. You will find a pump reservoir that you may need to add oil to. On my boat I have to take the upholstered engine cover off and it is right up against the stern of the boat I can also get to it from the top but it pretty much requires I do a headstand I hope yours is a little easier to get to than mine.
Your not supposed to be able to lift it all the way with the trim up button. This is to protect the drive shaft. You should only be able to fully lift it with the trailer button. If you don't feel like it lifts high enough with the trim up button it can be adjusted by rotating the limit level switch on the leg. I would not attempt to do any adjusting without finding out from the dealer who sold you the boat what the maximum extension on the lift cylinders is before the trim limit switch kicks out.
Best thing to do is disconnect it permanently! You can tell by the sound of the engine if your boat is trimmed properly...boat owners are gluttons for punishment anyway!
Jeremy Rowe the trim buttons are not supposed to lift the leg beyond a certain point. If your trim up button lifts the leg too high it can damage the drive shaft. That's why you need to use the trailer button to go all the way up. The only time you should have the leg all the way up is when towing.
SHORT VER READ HERE Trust me my idea did work.. keep trying till u understand this method will work its like a pull start bolt to drive it into the nutted end...
If you can sill hear the pump working but it's not lifting check the hydrolic fluid level. It may be low. I'm not sure how much you know about boats so I'm going to start with the obvious the trim button is not meant to lift it as high as it will go. It's a safety feature so you don't lift it too high while it's running. The trailer button is meant for lifting it when you're going to put it on the trailer. That being said does the trailer button work at all? If the trailer button doesn't work at all your problem is most likely somewhere in the wiring . Even a fuse. If the trailer button lifts part way but not all the way check your hydraulic fluid. That's why I I mentioned listening to see if the hydraulic motor was humming while you were trying to lift the motor with the trailer button. Good luck

My trim up goes 25% up and stops is this my problem or a solenoid? The boat is a 2015!
Going to try it on mine both of mine go up 1/2 way and then stop. Trailer switch goes all the way up 🤦♀️ SMH
Jeremy Rowe the trim buttons are not supposed to lift the leg beyond a certain point. If your trim up button lifts the leg too high it can damage the drive shaft. That's why you need to use the trailer button to go all the way up. The only time you should have the leg all the way up is when towing.
SHORT VER READ HERE
Trust me my idea did work..
keep trying till u understand this method will work its like a
pull start bolt to drive it into the nutted end...
me toooooooo
Mine will go all the way down but only half way up and stop
Good luck
@@robbeam5599 I know nothing about boats lol just got this one it will go all way down then up easy to have way then just stops like does nothing just cuts out on my dash it says it’s at half on the gauge
