Repair your mercruiser trim sender...don't replace it!

  • This is a short video on how i repaired my mercruiser trim sender. It was a simple fix.....if you have this type of sender unit and it has stopped working.....before you buy a new one ($75😩) try this. If you have a new unit, seal it with 5200 before you put it in the water....😆🚤ing.
    Update 7/8/2017: the aluminum terminal repair worked great with the boat on the trailer and in the backyard. It only lasted about 20mins in the salt water. So, just like I thought, the terminal needs to be redone with stainless steel metal.

    THANK YOU!!!! You are the only one on youtube who has actually shown whats in there and how to possibly fix this issue. I was having an issue with the trim gauge needle only moving about a 1/4 of the gauge, and after I took the sending unit cover off I found the same as you did, except that the little tines on the bottom connection had 3 missing/broken off, and one left was not making contact. I bent that one tine over a bit and it now works like a charm. I know I'll need to completely replace it eventually, but until then you saved me a lot of hassle. thanks again.

    Great video. I found the wires were cut maybe pinched. I was able to take mine apart put new wires in it and splice to the old wires. Zip tied the new splice back inside and hopefully they won’t get pinched again.

      Great job, I'm crossing my fingers for ya. I've found that here in Virginia no matter what I do I only get two to three seasons out of a newly installed set before I have to make some type of repair to them.

    I just got into mine. The lower contact arm had the three little fingers broken off, so I merely reshaped the rest of the piece to match the contact point where the three fingers used to contact the back of the white disk. Did a minor adjustment and it works like before...Awesome. Should last for a few seasons. BTW, the notch in the disk on my 1995 Bravo 1 faces forward. Appreciate this vid. Dunno what we all did prior to CZcams...hah!

    Thank you. One of the wires came loose on my trim unit and I want to re-connect it if possible. I haven't found anyone showing how to reconnect a wire broken from trim unit but this video is very nice and I'm learning things - I know a lot more than before I checked this out. Peace.😊

    I made a new contact out of the brass feeler from a set of feeler gauges, easy to fabricate !!

    Try to pack the sender full of grease, as well as where the wires are- is there a rubber part for the wires that's held in place with a screw? If so there are two o-rings that might be bad and letting water in (#006). Also cracks in old wire insulation lets water wick into the sender. Just replaced my wires with 16ga silicone zip cord- working well. Thanks for posting!

    Thanks for sharing. Good option to make the sensor work. Good job. Question, I have a broken wire protruding 1/4" from the sensor. Any suggestions?

    • @playbig22
      @playbig22  Před 7 lety

      Tim Attwell , thank you for the kind words. In my opinion, if a wire has broken at your sensor without any trauma you might do better to replace the sensor. My reasoning is, once a conductor is exposed to salt water for some length of time it becomes less effective in some ways and brittle. Now, if you are a fresh water boater and just want a quick fix, you might consider soldering it and brushing on some liquid conductor boot repair...that might hold you over for a while. What ever you decide... keep me posted.
      Good luck 😃

    I am confused after reading which way disk goes back in, and what is aft? So when disk is in place on the sender, notch faces front towards transom (FRONT)? Last guy said not toward prop.

      My 1995 Bravo 1 has the notch facing forward. Just made this repair this morning.

  • @buffloon
    @buffloon Před 5 lety +1

    I can't read what it says about the position of the notch on the disk , is it up to the right or down to the left?

    • @playbig22
      @playbig22  Před 5 lety

      The notch should be mounted to face to the aft end of the boat

    if the disc is broke and no connection the trim won't work then?

    • @playbig22
      @playbig22  Před 2 lety

      If the disk is broken chances are the conductor within has been severed. This fix will only work with a good working disk

  • @dwetick1
    @dwetick1 Před 5 lety

    Disconnect wiring from + 12VDC...You don't want it going into the water as the drive is Battery Negative terminal! Electrolysis is destroying your wiring.

  • @1wide7
    @1wide7 Před 6 lety

    Which way does the notch face on the disk?

    • @playbig22
      @playbig22  Před 6 lety

      Joe A , the notch should face aft

  • @dejapollo
    @dejapollo Před 5 lety

    Does the notch face forward or backwards?

    • @playbig22
      @playbig22  Před 5 lety

      Backwards

    • @cryingleftists2290
      @cryingleftists2290 Před 2 lety

      If you are looking at it, it faces to the right. If you say aft they think he means left. Where it is mounted if it is right could be considered aft or bow. So the notch is toward the aft not towards the prop
