- Writing automation without writing automation (Parameter Modulation in REAPER Pt. 1)
In this video, we’re looking at Parameter Modulation using Audio Signal (sidechain)
This is a really powerful feature, that let’s you assign any audio signal to any parameter or any plugin! We can use it for sound design to create dynamic effects that respond to the dynamics of our performance, and we can automate certain mixing tasks by having parameters listen to a signal and automatically perform a task!

Automatic like for the dark grandma joke! 🙂 Rest of the video is incredible. So powerful!
Hahaaa I almost used my own grandma's pic but ended up not :D
@@IDDQDSound Good call. 👍 🙂
The Don!
Reaper Don!!
All Reaper youtube-gurus take note.
Love your style buddy, thanks a bunch:)
I'm doing a big transition to Reaper since 2 weeks ago, coming from Logic and Ableton Live. Every day I see great functions and possibilities in Reaper that I just love
Good to hear! If you need help recreating the workflow from Logic and Ableton let me know and I can make videos on them :)
I'm in the same boat...Ableton Live 12 didn't incorporate ARA, so I'm done giving them money. They aren't listening to their customers so they're going to lose them. So far, I'm very impressed with Reaper.
Sidechain the reverb on seperate track?!
Sidechain a wideband EQ???
Did...did you just show us how to make our own dynamic EQ?!
Fakken 'ell m8 NICE STUFF!
The autowriting at end blew me away "OH!"
Thats crazy!
You opened my mind to different kind of workflow I was not aware of
Great video ! I already use parameters modulation often but I never realized they could be written as automation, which brings this a step further !
saame! In fact at one point I tested it and thought it doesn't work :)
pretty crazy to think about endless possibilities of REAPER and how it's somehow much easier to dial in compared to other DAWs, when you managed to get over the "Steep learning curve".
Thanks, Arya, for sharing this excellent tutorial.
The reverb trick is brilliant! Thanks.
Pretty cool :)
Brilliant! Thank you.
You are just a treasure trove of useful shit I never knew I needed but holy fuck did I need it! I love playing around with massive reverb but run into all the usual problems when you use massive reverb. I can't wait to get home & into the studio to mess around with this!
I agree! I don't wanna totally castrate my reverb, but just having it a bit under control really helps :)
Great video! Thank you
So basically you can create a more customizable Trackspacer in reaper for free. What a great video! Thank you!
Oh yeah totally! Good idea!
Love the technical terms like "Shablammo!"
awesome, keep the tips coming
Dudes... I'm diggin' your channel! Thanks for the video.
Kind regards,
George
Thank you George! Glad you're enjoying the channel :)
Thanks. I have been through what the param mod can do but I still had normal side chaining in the forefront of my mind. I've now moved these techniques up the priority list to think about first.
Yeah sidechain is probably the most usable of all, but I'm enjoying some EQ ducking too :)
Brilliant! Very well explained!
Thank you :)
Just Great!
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 just what i need the most now
Glad the timing worked :)
Thank you for showing us this.
My pleasure!!
Ha! I was so proud when I found this out on my own, two months ago. I made a four band EQ listen to a podcast voice track and duck that frequencies on a music track. Much better than volume ducking, or even Waves Vocal Rider, and free with ReaEQ.
Because frequencies in the music on track 2, that are not used by the voice on track 1, play on, you don't have the pumping effect that ducking with gain or compressor will give you.
I thought I was brilliant, first time I invented something of my own in stead of following videos of others. But of course all of you reaper experts already thought of this long ago 😀
Haha that's still cool that you got it yourself. None of us invented anything. We just pass on info to each other about using stuff we didn't invent :)
awesome man, very useful! Thanks.
Glad to help :)
very good videos lately!
Thanks!!! Working on a video I hope will be my best but it's taken ages, so I did this one not to disappear for months!
Thanks bro!!!!
Nice! Thanks!
You bet!
Genious!
Muy útil! Gracias
de nada :)
Your videos are FOIRE💥
awesome
Very nice! I do use LFO parameter modulation every once in a while, mostly for testing purposes, but sidechain parameter modulation does also seem very useful. BTW, I think just a single click on the control rather than a wiggle should be enough, although this might depend on the plugin.
Haha yeahhh clicking works fine. I'm just anxious af :)
@@IDDQDSound Actually I was just testing this today, and with VST you can indeed just click, but with CLAP you do have to change the value aka wiggle.
@@TaleTN Oh interesting! I don't any clap stuff but I remember at one point clicking wasn't always working and wiggling did :)
mind blown! this changes everything. thanks for everything that you do.
My pleasure! :)
Thanx!
Hey I was waiting for a comment from you :)
Great video as always. Do you have a video that explains when recording. I am trying to record a bass using a bass, VST, for a song and want to be able to stop and then continue recording the baseline. I am also trying to figure out how to go back and record over and fix mistakes. Thanks. Happy holidays.
Hey Matty! I have a video on recording right here: czcams.com/video/fEYtZkv8j4w/video.html
To answer your first question. You have to pause instead of stop if you wanna start where you were, so that's Control+Spacebar, or you can change it :)
My dream is Reaper will have modulation system like Bitwig.. Hope that day will come
I subscribed to your channel because Kenny Gioia told me to do.
Thanks Kenny!!! Where did he do that?:)
@@IDDQDSound Uhhhhh I found it !!!! I had to.

@ 4 minutes and 09 seconds
4 BIG GREEN ARROW will show up.
It would be nice to have an envelope for parameter modulation itself. For example tweaking release, strength and so on. Or maybe there is a way already? 🤔
I never knew you could grab that line in the graph to change the curve! Thanks for the tip!
My pleasure! Thanks for watching :)
do you know how to make mouse modifiers like fl studio
and how to glide 808 in midi writing?
gliding is on your VSTi not on the DAW.
Mouse modifiers, yes, but you have to be more specific
In cubase 12 pro,you can automate all 3rd party plugin parameters like a pro.I check hundreds of tutorials on CZcams but non show me that.automation is king.
I got a whole playlist on reaper automation. This is not a cubase channel tho
like a pro? in reaper it seems amatuer paramter modulation to you?
How do you know when to use reaEQ rather than proQ3?
I use Pro Q3 almost always but in my tutorials I use ReaEQ to look like a man of the people lol!
That said, ReaEQ has an all-pass filter which Pro Q3 doesn't so sometimes I use it because of that! :)
Is there a part 2?
Coming. There's a part 0 here: czcams.com/video/zxYyA5_KfJE/video.html
Shout out to REAPERBLOG! (Nice shirt) :^)
Hello bro you Can make a tutorial on the mixing vocals rap please 👏👏👏
send me some of your recordings and I'll do a video on them! I don't rap myself but would love to mix yours on video and hopefully you'll learn a few things :)
@@IDDQDSound sorry bro i don't rap but i just like sound editing because i want to be a professional sound engineer like you.
Can you help me. Are you familiar with BFD3 drums? I purchased a BFD3 drums a few weeks ago however Reaper does not seem to recognize it. I use a PC and just followed their instructions so the file is in my C: Disk.
In preferences>Plug-ins there's a box to specify paths to scan for VSTs, there you need to add this directory to scan
@@IDDQDSound Thank you for your reply. I tried adding a path but it didn't work. I wrote this in the edit path C:\Core Audio Content\. This didn't work when I tried to re-scan VST paths for new/modified plug-ins.
@@prodcore hmmm. Try being as specific as you can with the path. Like go to the exact same folder. Also in fx browser make sure you have All highlighted from the left column.
Parameter modulation with eq is effectively a dynamic eq isn't it? A bit of a workaround and it's a lot simpler to just grab TDR Nova, but still, you could set up Rea-eq as a dynamic eq using dynamic modulation of the same track couldn't you? I'm not working in my studio right now, otherwise I'd try it.
It sorta is but not exactly. In a regular dynamic eq, each band "listens" to just its own frequency and respond dynamically. With this setup all bands will listen to the whole signal, so for example, a kick hit on a room mic will still trigger a high band filter.
You could sidechain it to a band passed filter, but yeah at that point may as well get tdr nova :)
@@IDDQDSound Oh I don't think that's right. I have every band of rea eq listening to just that frequency on another track. It works smoothly.
Trick if you want to use a sidechain signal from another track with param mod: use ReaLearn to get the source signal
One of these days I'll properly get into ReaLearn. Somehow it's harder than all the rest of reaper combined :)
its bad that u tell ur grandma. don't do that
Damn those lyrics are CORNY
