- What makes a teacher special? What does a teacher need to know? What is the most important thing a new teacher needs to develop?
Teachers have a very particular type of knowledge. The old saying that if you can't do, teach, sells short what teachers know. Pedagogical Content Knowledge described the knowledge teachers develop about how to teach particular subjects to particular people. This concept was developed by Lee Shulman in 1986, but is just as relevant for teachers today.
Excellent video! Thank you for explaining PCK so succinctly.
This really is the path way, a teacher goes through, I extracted from my teaching experience as well.
Thanks for this video, its a really easy to follow explanation of Shulman which I have failed to find elsewhere.
Great to hear it was useful Grace!
This is a very good and simple explanation of the topic. Thanks.

Teachers arent special. they nearly killed Maths Physics and English to name but a few subjects with their bored rhetoric. It was the same in school, Tech college and finally university. In my experience they are egotistic, patronising, verbose and my god so boring. They specialise in taking the wonderful thing that is a subject and reduce it to a mundanity that is profound. The techniques used in any classroom or lecture theatre are archaic to say the least. Thank god for youtube where you can watch people (sometimes teachers) but who have a genuine PASSION for what they teach AND are good at it. Not a fan sorry.
I'm sorry you never had genuinely passionate teachers and only experienced the egotistical, patronizing, and verbose/boring teachers. I've had numerous educators teach and inspire me throughout my life and I will never forget their impact on me (and I agree there are terrible teachers that create impact as well). I think it's too harsh to categorize ALL teachers in this negative hue, but you are entitled to your own opinion. There are so many aspects that go into what makes teachers effective in their work (resources, students' communities, credentials/qualifications, administration, etc). Thankful you were able to use CZcams as an outlet for learning.
