Honestly the best tutorial for the square disc. Having never touched it before, I successfully made my first flat braid. It wasn't perfect, but it was vastly better than what I might have created if I didn't know what pitfalls to avoid.
I love the furry face that peeked over your table! 😺
I was going to re-shoot that part, but then I thought people might find it amusing!
This is the best tutorial for me. Your breaking the motions down was a big help for me. Thank you sooo much for sharing.
Thank you this is one of the best video I have seen for using the square plate.
I appreciate your clear instructions and the explanations as to what to avoid to make a successful flat braid. :)
I could literally fall asleep to you explaining things. Your voice is that soothing.
Thank you for the tutorial. The instructions were clear and easy to follow along. I've still got a hot mess of a bracelet but I'll keep at it. Practice. Practice. Practice. Thank you
Thanks Pru, I was just struggling with the technique, great to get a refresher from the queen of Prumihimo.
Thank you. Your videos never disappoint. I watch them over and over again when I am learning something new.
Happy to hear that!
Thank you for all your tutorials. I love the kitty kat who appears at the start♥️
Thank you, that was very informative and well done!
Thank you for this tutorial! It was very clear and helpful!!
Thank you for your wonderful and clear instructions.
Thank you so much. Very clear explanation. Good tips. I have the square for years, though I’m only concentrate on the round one, but I was worry about the square one. With your explanation now I think that is not that difficult. God bless you. Regards from Sydney.
I like to do this to make my own Obijime. Thank you for the tutorial 🙏🏻✨
I love round disc so much I got the square discs a week ago and was kinda scared of them. Thanks for this video! You make sense
Thank you for such great tutorials, they’re very much appreciated 👍🙂

Thank you very much! I loved it to learn with you.
I am brazilian
Perfectly informative video. Thanks a lot
WOW!! Thank you so much =) Loved all the very helpful tips and tricks. I thought your kitty was going to play havoc for a second, Good Kitty!!!
Minky Toms - he loves to get involved!
I just used my normal round disk for this and it worked amazingly. Using a weight like you did is a game changer though!!!
Very clear instructions, Thank you, Pru.
I am so pleased that you found them clear.
Thanks so much for this video Pru. I tend to stay away from the flat braid, and this has made me much more confident about creating it.
Your tutorials are very helpful. You said there is a video for using left over cord. I would like to see that one. I also am looking for how to end the square plate kumihimo bracelet.
lovely tutorial, but i found myself doing it better remembering the numbers like 15-5,4-15,14-4, i think for a beginner ity is much easier. Not sure if anyone else has tried it that way, but would be interesting to find out if teachers do teach by numbers also. Thanks for sharing your great ideas.
Can't wait to try my first braid. Thank you for the simple explanation
I am so pleased that this explanation works for you and I hope your first braid will be beautiful!
Thank you for the brilliant clear and concise explanation! I've been debating on whether to venture into kumihimo and watching some of your videos have made me decide to try it... Now to wait for the postman! Many thanks from Ireland.
Glad it was helpful!
@@Prumihimo very helpful...I'm teaching my 8 year old granddaughter to do it now!
I have been promising that I will upload videos for the square plate, as well as other disks, so here is the first one. This is the most familiar braid made on the square plate, so it is a good starting point, but I have got some other flat braids lined up to demonstrate in the future.
Awesome. Do you have more of these flat braid videos? I can't see them on this channel
Thank you for this excellent tutorial, and the tips at the end for setting up braids with even more warps. The first (and only) standard 10 warp braid I made used eight cords in the main color and just two in a coordinating color (intended to warm up the main color just a little bit). I really had no idea what I was doing, or if it would work. I lucked out, starting the odd colors at the crossover (which I didn't know of at the time), and soon discovered a diamond pattern emerging! Seeing how those two cords travelled showed me the importance of the crossover to this braid, and the diamonds now gave me a specific place (at the widest point) to nestle the gemstone beads I'd planned to use all along. Pure beginner's luck! I think this square disk series will inspire me to push my luck once more!
Interesting observation. Trial and error is always so valuable. Your gemstone braid sounds great.
Very helpful! Thanks!
Great teacher!!!
Best name ever! Thanks for the tutorial!
Glad you like it!
❤ love that beautiful
Thanks Ms,🙏🙏🥰

I am just starting out in earnest on the square disc, and I really appreciate the tips you give for overcoming challenges and making a better braid. You bet I subscribed! I'll also be checking out your website. Thank you so much!
That is so good to hear because I think a lot of people give up on the square plate, but it is well worth the effort!

just received my square and round disks. looking forward to using them, thanks for the simple tutorial that even I can understand :)
Have fun with your disk and square plate, but beware .... it is addictive!
Thanks Pru I need a change from the round disc I look forward to more flat braids
Thank you for making this video. Flat braids on the square kumihimo plate has always been confusing to me. Going to pull out my kumihimo plates and 1mm rat-tail cord.
Loved the furry face peaking over the table.
Thank you very much!
Thank you! Now I can made kumihimo for my friend.
Rumors says
that she is a master at explaining
Thank you so much!
Thank you!
I hope you will make some beautiful belts. Best wishes from London.
So good, Thanks for sharing
Thank you too
Thank you for making this video

Kitty might be nomming the braid...
hi great video i have been trying to do a bracelet in the square disk but i don't know how long the cord should be can you please answer this message as soon as possible i wat to make one for my granddaughter for her birthday thank you for your videos i am new at this kumihimo craft you are a great teacher i just like the way you explain everything it seems simple i really would like to try it GOD BLESS YOU
Ty. I just purchased Kumihimo plates, I'm very new to this art. Eventually I want to make an even wider braid with thicker or more cords for a larger handbag. Question on the 12 cord braid: why not take the 2 side cords to the top like you do on the 10 cord braid?
Georgia Corey - The reason for this that at this point there are already 6 cords on the top and 4 on the bottom, so by bringing the side cords down you have the same number of cords on the bottom.
What type of traditional loom is the square plate equivalent to?
Muy lindas podria traductor a español gracias
Can. You. Useing derfrence colors like Walmart. String to. Do. That bracelet. You. Made how long. Of string and how meant just. Wondering
ooooooooooo you have a cat, love cats
The naught boy had to have a peep!
Great video! I am just learning on the circular plate but want to get a square plate soon. Is binding off a flat braid the same as a round braid? What type of end cord do you recommend for flat bracelets?
There are several ways you can finish them off. You can try flat ribbon ends that you squash flat with pliers or you can squeeze the flat braid into more of a round braid and treat them just the same as a round braid.
Hi normally how much do i cut for just flat bracelet or 2 color one in the flat square kumihimo disk
Can I make a cord length of about 20”?
안녕하세요! 잠시 물어볼게 있는데...
그라데이션은 어떻게 넣나요?
색깔을 바꾼다던지...\(ㅇㅂㅇ)/
This may be a stupid question but is it at all possible to do a flat braid using a round disk with these braiding methods? Or would that produce a different shape? I'm very new to kumihimo and I am absolutely in love with it. Excellent tutorials!
It is a very good question! In theory, yes you can make this braid on the round disk, but it would be harder to get even tension and straight sides. If you shop around you can buy these very cheaply, so I would recommend getting one.
@@Prumihimo Great thanks for the tip :)
Great tutorials. Wish you could come in a little closer. Thanks.
Hanks for the constructive comment. This is one of my earlier videos and in more recent ones I come in closer. You can also find the details of the designs on my website,

Hi Pru, pls could you do a video on how to reverse a chevron half way through braiding. So the pattern's is running the opposite way. Hope you can. Thank you x
I need to give that some thought. If I can work it out I will certainly do a video.
thank you prue. I've tried but can't seam to get my head around it lol.
May i know what thread are you using in this video? Really liked all of your videos 😆 thank you
Satin cord, also known as rattail
On your next video it would be very helpful if u zoomed in your camera
Thank you
Muy lindas sus pulseras pero podría poner traductor a español gracias
😊 😃 😀
5:10 just a timestamp for myself!
Can I use yarn instead of cord? please and thank you for a reply
You can use pretty much any sort of cord or yarn. Just remember that very thin cord will take a long time to make up and very thick cord will make a very chunky braid.
@@Prumihimo Thank you
Cat 🐈 at 3:45
and how much length is average? does the material change those numbers
The ususal recommendation for all kumihimo is to use 3x the required finished length for each cord. This is generous, but you can't add in more cord if you need it so It is worth sticking to this, especially as different materials do have a different take up, depending on the width and also the firmness of the cord.
Can it work for 10 braid too
You can adjust the number of cords you use for this braid. For 10 cords you need 6 across the top and 4 across the bottom of the disk/plate.
Wait so how many threads are there??
How can I calculate the length of each thread for a belt?tks
Laura Garcia I suggest about twice the finished length you want for each cord.
I understood the 12 cord better than the 10!
kololikate You might find the photos and written instructions more helpful, prumihimo.com/resources/braiding-square-plate2/10-cord-flat-braid/
Can u please write down the numbers to each number in the right order? Thanks

I hope you will find them useful.
Would have helped me if you'd zoomed in at the start to show the braids before you made them and zoomed in more because i have clue what you are showing sadly as you explain clearly
Please use close up on ur video. You are so far away from camera I can't tell what your doing. Thank you.
Thanks for the constructive criticism, Linda. This is a learning process for me! When I do the actual braiding I do use close up shots and in future videos I will show more close-ups of the designs in the beginning intro section.
Thank you. You go slow for me.
Kumihino firkantet
Why don’t you start from bringing
saying three times more cord, is not helpful, to a newbie. Each of the ten strands needs to be three times the length of the finished project?
That is correct.
too fast!
kololikate I will try to go a bit slower for future videos!
I learned to do KUMIHIMO from youtube using the round disc and will give this one a try. Many thanks
Thank you so much!!!!
