My Boss never gets mad unless he sees a dirty area. Being clean keeps the mind at peace and it's 100x easier to find what you need

I didn't take it as it looks dirty, just that it's an inefficient use of space. Everything has a place. I hated walking around the shop hunting for X. If you are done with a shop tool put it back where it belongs. Just the fact he wants a bench for working on makes me happy. Worked in bunch of shops that didn't believe in having even one bench. Said didn't have room for them.

I have a Land Rover LR3 w205k zero prob, great engine. Jag 4.4 V8
V8 gasoline is super but the v6 diesel are sch... they all have issueswith the crankshaft bering, the 2.7 and the 3.0 liter as well.@@utahagentz

Worked at a ford dealer for 25 years, the boss use to come in and say hi and talk to the guys,then the dealer was sold to a corporation,and it sucked, your shop remind me of how things use to be. Good to see👍👍

If I were 20 years younger I would pack my tools and head to SLC and camp out in Daves parking lot until he hires me! This is the kind of employer I have always wanted to work for but for some reason never was able to make the connection. Now about that work bench...such a nice clean shop except for that spot. Every shop I have ever been in has had the problem of any horizontal empty space getting piled with junk.
I worked for a slob like that once - every square inch of horizontal space was loaded with garbage. Nice guy - just paid no mind to organization or 5S. Like you, if I was still in this game, it'd be a dream to work at place like Dave's.
It takes a certain discipline to respect horizontal space like workbenches and shelves. That discipline is a learned skill.
I have a boss like him here in VA! He is originally from Canada, it is now a US citizen for like 30 years! This man is the most honest male, understanding person I ever meet! Totally need more people like this nowadays

My heart goes out to to Dave, his crew and CUSTOMERS. I had to go to fleet service at a school district. Telling customers they need repairs that will exceed the value of their vehicles is not fun. Trust me. Ocassional you get to give good news but you feel pain for the folks just getting by and catastrophic failure visits their wallets. No fun.

I saw on there website where just the most basic diagnostic is $240, so yeah, not a cheap shop but they do awesome work.
@@EstebonSosa Even if a guy with 1 or 2 stalls is charging $240 for a basic diagnostic, anything less is a money loser, or loss leader if you prefer, I don't want my mechanic doing either of those things.
@@nspro931 No they arent, i can name at least 10 places right now that only charge $49 for a full diagnostic, including a friend of mine thats been in business 30 years plus!
with some of the specialty equipment shown, I expect substantially more than that

It definitely won’t last past the first season. Not enough here to just watch a regular auto shop. OCC and Wheeler Dealers had a lot better premise. “It needs a motor,” just isn’t interesting enough for 10 seasons.

Ohhh ive been here a few times. Sometimes it is what it is, what ive learnt its best if its someone elses program. Ive had a similar guy with a jeep that needed 11 grand worth of work. He wanted spark plugs and brake pads done. Brakes are metal to metal, the timing belt is a rotation over from snapping, and the whole car was a wreck. Had a 33 min conversation explaining everything. Basically I refused to do the job since I do not with to be married to the vehicle and it fail under my watch. 2 weeks later I saw the guy on the side of the road. You made the right choice dave.

I wish I had an owner that was involved as much as you are. I also like how you insist on keeping standards in place and aren’t afraid to say it…ie shop cleanliness. I’ve literally never talked to the owner of my dealership personally in the 4 years that I’ve worked there. I see him on TV more than in person. Our shop is big and has the potential to be so much better but management is just flat out piss poor. Good work Dave!
Dave, it’s so refreshing to see a nice clean shop that is being run professionally, orderly, top tier techs and integrity. I’ve run a German and Swedish shop for 34 years, surgically. Not many of us around these days. Sadly, the dealerships and a lot of independent shops have given mechanics a bad wrap. Looking forward to seeing you guys go live on TV. Congratulations. Money. Lot of the old car guys aged out/retired/sold their shops to ex-finance people. They know absolutely NOTHING about cars nor do they care. MONEY! MONEY! MONEY! That's all they care about. DO IT FASTER! MONEY! MONEY! MONEY! I retired March 2020. Sold ALL my tools for about 1/10 of value so could honestly say, nope. I can't work on your car. DONE!

That's crazy your shop works on just about everything. From a 6.0 Ford to a right hand drive mystery machine from another country to a diesel Jag that just about nobody has seen
I’m 75 years old and my dad was a part time mechanic and full time farmer. Small family farm for existence and some profit. He did a one man mechanic shop and worked on everything from lawn mowers to farm tractors. Brake , clutch replacement and full tare down over-halls from the 1950s through the 70s. No specialty tools and an electric impact gun. Everything was done sight and feel. His engines lasted well into the life of the cars and trucks and tractors. I used this knowledge to maintain my vehicles until when you raised the hood and could no longer see the ground below. I was the only one out of the 3 boys that could do this so I fixed their vehicles as well. My dads shop had a gravel floor and potbelly stove that was like heating a stable in an open barn. Good ole tuff times and lot of good memories.
Thats a big shop with what seems alot of excellent skilled Technicians.

In my Radio shop, I called it MWWA (Managing While Walking Around). I loathed sitting at my desk, unless it was to sign paychecks.
I’d be disabling each injector on that jag with the scan tool and seeing if the noise changes in anyway. See if you can isolate it to a particular hole.
But a couple dead giveaways sound speeds up with rpm.
Sound seems to be half the speed of the crankshaft.
Definitely have pretty good direction right there. Im a fairly knowledgeable technician, might not hold a candle to the knowledge you possess. Great video guys !!!!

Yup I do the same I work side by side with my guys and get dirty everyday next to them. I don’t run a mechanic shop but a 103 year old well drilling business.

Dealers stop caring the minute they hand you the keys & they staff their service depts accordingly.
Very few of those types left, and the ones that are remaining fight a constant battle of the current generation of snowflakes not liking to be told anything and wanting to be left alone to screw everything up and then play the victim.

I worked with my husband at a computer repair shop (he still works there), and you remind me of his boss. Us technicians would have specific knowledge about failure trends with specific Windows updates, brand shenanigans, etc., because we were working with all the little jobs coming through. The boss has a much broader field of knowledge and would advise on larger jobs, verify diagnoses, general supervisory role... and would jump in for the high value/high risk jobs, or those that involved areas of expertise we weren't as versed in.
I don't usually post comments, but I am inspired to today. Had a lot of fun watching this video, reminds me when I had my commercial location.
