Orbits - Why Satellites Follow Curved Trajectories

- This LabRat video outlines two physical descriptions as to why orbiting objects follow a curved trajectory around the earth. One description deals with horizontal and vertical distance travelled over a time period and the other deals with the balance of the gravitational force and the "centrifugal" force due to the speed of the orbiting object. Can you explain how you arrived at a Gravity constant of 1.41e15 ft^3/s^2? I cannot verify that value for G anywhere?

Yep, I bounce between English and SI units when I create the videos. I'm going to lean more towards SI units in the future... Unfortunately engineers in the US tend to deal with English units - and I'm part of that "old school". It can be a hard habit to break - after all, I weigh myself in Pounds not Newtons (or Kilograms)... Thanks for the suggestion.

@@labratscientific1127 not sure why everyone wants to jump on board with the metric system. There are the countries that use the metic system and then there is THE country that has walked on the moon. I'm sure there are arguments in both directions
