Thanks for the video! Here is what I think is happening here. Let me preface, I have the original 72 set and they are super water reactive and the 120 set and they are very water resistant (I did a comparison video last year when I realized it) and they were both the expert colored pencils (not the watercolor ones.) I got both sets before the pandemic. I think they improved the pencils between the 1st and 2nd batch. I think with so many factories shutting down with the pandemic last year and many people stuck at home wanting to do art they had to use any factory that could make their pencils and that is why so many people are having very different experiences with them. I really like the expert watercolor pencils as they are very vibrant and dissolve completely BUT I had a viewer say they couldn't get any color from their pencils. That's more than 2 people with different preferences or opinions. That's different product. I am very concerned because I review a lot of budget supplies and I am noticing inconsistencies over the past year that were not there before. I think because budget brands are not in control of their product like Derwent or Faber Castell (or other pro brands) are so they have no idea what they are selling themselves. I contacted a company who's budget watercolor I bought and reviewed and the 36 set was way better than the 48 and to their knowledge there wax no change in quality, it was the same paint as far as they knew. Its buyer beware now which really puts our credibility at risk ad art supply reviewers. I didn't realize Arteza raised the prices, that 120 set was about $40 when I reviewed it which ad more than fair, it's a budget pencil but they probably are selling more at the higher price due to perceived value. I got scolded by Amazon for saying the price in a review and I said it's important for someone to know what the price of a product is as they hear my review because obviously I will be expecting more from a pricey brand and something might be a great deal at $30 but a rip off at $60. Anyway, sorry for the book, I just wanted to chime in. Good luck:)

Hi there Lindsay, you may be right and that is what going on. WOW only $40.00 I have noticed that many lower end pencil sets that used to be very affordable are now not so affordable and I think they are setting a higher price because they know people are stuck at home and want...need to color to relax. Shame on them! 🤬 I will be checking out your channel today. Thank you for watching and commenting. 🥰

@@ladyinblack3398 funny you mentioned that because I was thinking along the same line. Hands down, the closest to Prismas in my opinion, are Blick’s colored pencils. I bought mine years ago, a set of 72. Not sure if they make larger sets now or not. Blick’s would definitely back their products, though.

It's easy to place all blame on Arteza or any other product creator and mind you they do own the blame for the inferior product however.. in your case the blame goes to the consumer failure of the process in the Amazon fulfillment contract. I'll explain why Arteza can't replace your order & guarantee you get their newer product. When a company signs on with, in this case Amazon, as a vendor (Arteza in this case) they send a large stock of their product to said fulfillment company (Amazon). Amazon processes the product into their system & gets it to one of it's fulfillment centers. All orders & replacements go through that fulfillment center. The company (Arteza) signs an agreement to allow Amazon to process all the physical handling of products, returns & replacements. This is why they couldn't guarantee you a replacement of their newer product. Amazon collects a fee for each sale and if an item is returned Amazon keeps it & sells it off in large pallet sales then pulls from their existing stock to replace the item. The contract prevents the company from replacing from their own stock. In this case Arteza did all they could do for you as a customer. They authorized Amazon to issue a refund for the amount you spent for your colored pencils. This gives you the opportunity to purchase directly through Arteza where they have more control over which version you get.
You'll run into the same process when you purchase anything from any online fulfillment retailer be it Amazon, Walmart, etc.

I wrote to both Arteza's main company (Clearly said that in the video) and to the seller on Amazon, that was also Arteza. So the main Arteza company would not help and they were the first and last ones I emailed, so no, it's all Arteza!

After watching CMWs video, I did a water test on both my Arteza's and Prisma's.
I tested them on 67lb vellum and some mixed media paper.
Both brands bled on both kinds of paper. Granted, Arteza bled more, but the point is that in my experiment, Prisma's bled too.
I personally don't seal my work. My mom went to art school and she told me that any medium can change with a sealant. That was told to her by her art professors.
I generally keep my work in the books they come in but if I take it out of a book, I put it in a binder right away and use a sheet of acid free paper to cover it to prevent it from smearing or smudging.
I'm nonprofessional. I color because I enjoy it as a hobby and a past time.
I love my Arteza's. I love them more than Prisma's. I've used them with posca pens, gel pens, all kinds of mixed media.
Never had them bleed. Never unhappy with them.
I could write a couple chapters on how Prisma's disappoint me, but I won't.
    To each his own.

I worked in a lot of factories putting out a llot of different products, in every single one of those factories there is a code and or a date stamp on each and every product that comes down the assembly line ,so whenever a product is improved they should have a date and a time when that improved product first rolls out. So,the BS about not knowing whether they're sending you an old product or the new and improved one is a bunch of hogwash! I also would question their quality control, when I worked on the lines quality control is supposed to take a random sample at any time of the day or night and run it through multiple different types of tests. If there is a problem it's quality controls responsibility to bring it to the attention of the management so that that issue can be addressed..

Hi Kristopher, Do you think there is a chance the black on the eyes on your color page smeared because of your printer ink? I am wondering because I was just comparing my 2017 arteza colored pencils with my 2019 set (both have the same numbers and they are the same number as my arteza watercolor pencils that are way more water-soluble than the 2017 colored pencils) and I don't think fixative would be wet enough to move my old set. I was looking at the arteza website for the listing of the 120 pencils currently and there are different numbers (same names tho) on those than the 72 and 120 sets I have so I think there are actually 3 different versions of these pencils floating around! Also are your pencils round or Hex shaped? Another fun fact, my set of 120 pencils are thicker and my 2017 set of 72 which I only notice because I have to go up a size on my pencil sharpener, I never noticed that before.

      Hi Lindsay,
I know you love Arteza, I did at first myself, but with the quality issues that I, and many others, have been having, I can’t say that anymore. To answer your question, no, I do not think it is the ink in my printer. I have used the same printer, the same Ink, and the same paper for all of my printed coloring's and it has not happened before with any other pencil set. Before you ask, yes, I used the same finish as well. Some of the prints I have colored used much more black ink with thicker lines and more shading, the pine cones piece being one of them and colored with Prismacolor and Shuttle Arts. There was no problem when I sprayed that one or any of the others. Also, many comments have shown it's not just me or Lori. In this case, it’s not user error, it’s the Arteza product, which is a shame because they laid down so nicely and were good to work with until running into this issue. Hope you have a great week 🥰

I'm surprised they don't have a batch code for the new sets and could replace your set that way. Hopefully they will get this worked out and replace sets for people that have defective sets.

But they could have fixed the issue. They could have shipped it directly from their new inventory rather than blame Amazon. And they should also be replacing Amazon's whole inventory with news ones. Unless there is no new formula? The customer service sounds nice, but not 100% helpful and he is getting different answers when contacting them directly and through Amazon. Again, he is jumping through hoops.

I did a test on the lightfastness on Arteza Expert and it was a disaster. I used a colour swatch and I covered one part with black paper and the other left on a direct sunlight. Most of the colours faded drastically for just 7 days on my window, even the ones marked as extremely lightfast (*). I think Arteza didn't test the lightfastness at all.

I’ve owned Arteza pencils for two years, now. I’m happy with them. I still have a large set of Prismacolours, which I still enjoy. My 81 year old father has his own set of 72, that he uses in colouring books. He’s on his second set because he used up his favourite colours. LOL We’ve not encountered any problems yet, but maybe I should check my drawings. LOL But what I really wanted to say is that, even though the colours “ran” on your drawings, they are amazing, nonetheless! You can see a change, but I couldn’t. They’re all really nice. I found out that a lot of these new art product companies just appeared in the last few years, around the time that the adult coloring trend became a trend. So I knew they were probably not trying to create a wonderful product. They are just jumping into that "cashgrab" trend.

I have been monitoring Arteza ever since this blew up and because of the odd way I was able to purchase the 120 set 'suddenly' when they had been out of stock on both Amazon UK and Aretza Europe for months. This morning I woke up early and when this happens I tend to just browse Amazon. I suddenly noticed the Arteza colour pencils 120 set flash up. To be honest it does all the time...but there was something odd, so I clicked on it and the pencils were availabe from 23 February. Ineteresting....it was about 5.30 am UK time. I have no intention of buying these again but I popped them in my basket and saved for later. I did it to see how long they remained available and the price. By 10 am I checked the basket again and they were unavaiable...which is exactly what happened when I purchased my 120 set from the Arteza site - they were unavailable, then suddenly available and within an hour of purchasing my 120 set, unavailable. After they appeared as available on the Amazon site I checked Arteza...still unvailable. I have this theory...I am wondering if Arteza are sending out small batches as a sort of test - and what they are sending out is the 'new formula' - to see if the problem is erradicated before supplying them more widely. I have not tested the set I have for water solubility because I was so cross about the issue and what I believe to be shady practice, that I put them in a cupboard and that is where they have stayed - after I confronted Arteza and they gave me my money back an hour after I emailed them. I did swatch them and frankly I was disappointed after all the hype. I think this was a marketing strategy to sell the pencils that went very badly wrong. Just a thought...

I have watched several videos on this issue yours was very entertaining I chuckled a bit here and there. I have purchased a few Artezza products and had thought about the pencils. One thing that makes this worse that hasn't been mentioned in any video is arteza offers a biweekly pay after payment and reward points that I thought was great being a newbie with the company on a fixed income. I purchased the goush paints with the paper and brushes bundle. Was waiting to pay off that then purchase soft pastels and the pencils next.. well now after all these videos I think I'll just save up and buy elsewhere. I love mixed media and coloring ect its stress relief being disabled on a fixed income and having my money wasted and projects ruin is a definite no from me.

There’s quite a few non-artist quality pencils that you can effectively “wash out” of paper by scrubbing with a paintbrush and water. Especially kid brands... they like them to be “washable”
For most people using these, this won’t be an issue as they’ll be using them as dry pencils in normal colouring books. But it’s good to highlight it for mixed media artists who might use liquid in their creations.

Kristopher I have subscribed to your channel. I'm glad to see you standing up to the company and the distribution company. Your right we don't know if there is a new revised product available. I place Arteza completely responsible for their product. It appears Arteza is using the cheapest formula and selling it as expert just to line their wallets at the customer's expense. Arteza should reduce their remaining products price to 19.99 and place a warning on Amazon that due to unforseen issues that they would not recommend artists or other adults to engage in professional use with the product. Let the children have the said products to play with. This should be done until every set of this product is accounted for and off the shelf. Their new formula should have distinctively better packaging and a moderately lower price as a customer appreciation price. Now they could take the older product and give it a good binder and label it for a children's line of pencils. It will cost but their customers are worth the effort.

My NEW Prizmacolor that I just got yesterday bleed in the red colors with water. I do not have let alone use Arteza. Really you get what you pay for when it comes to art supplies. If you do professional work that needs to be displayed, then buy true artist quality like Derwent Lightfast or Caran D Ache Luminance or Faber & Castell Polychromos.

mine was fine surprisingly it wasn’t bleeding but red is known to bleed a lot as a color itself… mainly the primary colors you probably see would affect… you probably got a bad batch but mine was fine it wasn’t that bad in the bleeding let alone even tho in the assignment I had to do I had to mix art gamsol for blending purposes even using rubbing alcohol it didn’t affect it too much

I've only just started with colour pencils, i usually sketch useing leaded or carbon, and paint with acrylics or oil paints, I've been doing it for a little over a year now. I always thought colour pencils were for children until i saw the master pieces that you produced. Absalutely amazing.
Going to try out myself not with those from amazon.

The problem is so many other channels have raved about Arteza for years now, some people they mean it but a lot because they were paid by Atreza to give them good reviews. They don't want anyone to know all of this as it makes them looks bad also.

Hi Kristopher, I found your video, quite by accident, tonight. Today I received a 72pc box of Arteza colored pencils. I had seen another artist's video after I ordered them yesterday, with a very unfavorable view of them. After watching, I cancelled my order with Amazon for these pencils and I was honest about hearing unfavorable things about them AFTER ordering. Amazon started my return immediately but the pencils had already been shipped, so I got them anyway this afternoon. I loved the colors but blending them was a real muscle and joint work out. I was glad to have had the chance to try them out and my conclusion is that they are making them un-meltable now to assure that water won't break them down. These were like dolla store pencils in that they left a very rough grainy texture that could not be smoothed out without using so much force that it wrinkled my paper trying to blend. So, this is my experience with Arteza colored pencils as of Mar. 15, 2023.
Glad I found your videos! I am now subscribed.

@@KristophersKorner I would love any suggestions for an easily blindable pencil. I also have arthritis in my hands. I must admit that I do own a large box of Prismacolors but they are packed and inaccessible to me right now. I am looking for something similar except for the price. I also own some oddball cheapies, and one set of Amazon pencils I love dearly but wish the colors were more vibrant. I use my pencils mostly for coloring envelopes, I love mail art and carve rubber stamps and color them in on my envelopes.
Thank you for welcoming me to your family too! I look forward to your future videos. Thanks for any help with pencils you have enjoyed.

Hello, I believe Arteza pencils are much cheaper than Prismacolor. Arteza 120 sell on Arteza site for around $68. Prismacolor 150 (they don’t sell 120) sells at Dick Blick for $275 (marked down to $116.) As we can see, Arteza is a much lower quality, so to expect them to react in the same vain as Prismacolor is unrealistic. But I’m glad you brought the Arteza problem to my attention. Thanks!

I'm so glad I saw this video and of course went to see the others. After three days of weighing things out between Arteza and Prisma I went for the Atreza because of price and Prisma breakage. I have had Prisma 40 yes 40 years ago. Therefore, I knew the buttery lay down. So, just finished drawing something I was going to use the Arteza pencils on. I then saw this video as well as Color My World's and another. I was fuming. I did the same testing. Two brush strokes and the pigment was lifted right off the paper!! I just got them! So I have to go through this rigmarole for a refund? I bought from Amazon using a gift card. Thank you for doing these videos and tests. I enjoyed the chuckles too!!

@@KristophersKorner Hi Kristopher! A few weeks ago I called Amazon and explained the problem with these Arteza Professional Colored Pencils. Truthfully, I was laxed at returning them. Maybe I was pouting. Lol. Upon initial call, I was sent a return label. Hmph! I called back today and told the customer service person I am NOT driving and going through the trouble of returning these crummy pencils through UPS. The customer service person credited my account with a full refund AND told me to keep the pencils. I had no trouble at all. Done in 7 minutes and she was pleasant. I will be sticking with the faithful but forever breaking Prismacolor. Thanks for your reply and your videos!

Thank you for this video. Now I see that there are other artists who have had this problem with Arteza pencils. I was considering buying a set of Arteza at a clearance price. But not now, even at clearance prices do I want colored pencils that dissolve. If they can't sort out their old formula pencils from their new formula pencils then it looks to me like Arteza would like to unload the old formula pencils and it's pot luck to the purchasers.

Thank you and Lorie for this review, I have had Arteza 120 on my wish list for some time. In Aud the cost is over $100, which I have to save up for as I'm on a low income. The company should have recalled all it's stock back from the seller's and then sent out the new formula pencils, easy! Then dealt with the customers of the DEFECTIVE pencils as they wrote into them. I have deleted the pencils from my wish list.
