    First of all, shoutout to ADCARTATTACK for the inspiration for this video. I'm a big fan of his art and love his videos. I wanted to do something similar but comparing prismacolors and artezas expert color pencils. you should definitely go check his channel out here: / @adcartattack
    So for my video I decided to pull a still from the show and transfer it to toned paper for the pencil test. I didn't fancy doing an original drawing and I did have an ellaborate background planned out but it would have been way too time consuming with colored pencils!
    The set of 72 Arteza expert color pencils will set you back £28 and the 150 set of Prismacolor pencils is roughly £110.
    Starting with the Arteza side, I'm genuinely surprised how good they felt to use. I've been using these pencils as a supplement to my prismacolors on and off since arteza sent me them last year to review and at the time I found them to be a very good affordable alternative but after completing this drawing I will be using them a lot more often and am actually really excited to get the 120 set they now have available (when it's back in stock)
    The Arteza's have a great selection of colors within the 72 set and the leds are extremely firm. This has positives and negatives. Because you don't have to constantly sharpen them or worry about the led snapping, it makes the experience of coloring much more enjoyable. The downside is that they take longer to blend together, they require quite a bit more effort and layers to get a similar affect.
    The prismacolor pencils in comparison are SO soft it's ridiculous. They can blend super easily. They also can cover flat areas with a thick layer of solid color really easily which makes them ideal for doing anime artwork. Ok, I made a mistake with the skin tones so don't judge too harshly on that. You can see they really stand out on the headband and orange collar with their color density. Obviously with the 150 set of prismacolor you get a much larger selection of colors which can actually be quite daunting for someone relatively new to art.
    I think overall I really enjoyed using the Arteza pencils and coloring the arteza side a lot more than I did the prismacolors (literally the second pencil I used on the prismacolor side, snapped the entire led off and had to resharpen)
    If you are on a budget then I can highly recommend the 72 set of arteza expert color pencils and you can definitely create some great quality artwork.

      However I'm not sure how to blend them properly without having white dots. Are the pencils enough - does it only depend on the technique? Or do you need a solvent or paper stump? In your video it seemed like you used the pencils only and the result is pretty smooth 👌🏼👍🏻

    • @Conda17
      @Conda17 Před 4 lety +4

      Cornetto MSc - it depends on how good/experienced you are. I am probably a month ahead of you if you have just started so here are a few pointers. The paper you choose depends on what you’re drawing, a smooth bristol board will work well for 2d, non realistic drawings with not a lot of depth and this will give a very smooth appearance but you won’t be able to layer a lot which can be crucial to how a drawing will look. Paper with more tooth can give you more realistic looking results but it’s a lot harder to work with. The white spots are the tooth of the paper that the pencil is gliding over therefore leaving the white paper showing. To avoid this most artists i have seen who are very good painstakingly work in tiny areas of the drawing with a very sharp tipped pencil so that those white gaps can be filled in, a blunt or round tipped pencil won’t be able to reach into those gaps. Search for “nee yellow” on youtube and watch his recent videos. This is why a good sharpener is helpful, the “kum masterpiece” sharpener or “derwent long point” hand crank sharpener work well with coloured pencils to achieve this sharp point. As for solvent you could use baby oil, coconut oil, mineral spirits such as paint thinner or a powder thinner that i recently bought by “paint and brush” called titanium white. They will all work but i’ve seen many top class artists who use none of these products. A lot of people just use a lot of layers and then use the white pencil to blend the rest together which does work, you could also search for burnishing techniques, hope this helps.

      @mr.chaosvicious5968 Před 4 lety

      I've NEVER had any of my Prismacolor Premier pencils snap while I was coloring,like they seem to have done on you or the artist here. But then again,I don't often mash down very hard on them or sharpen them to a very fine/sharp point most of the time though. And when I actually do,I am pretty careful until it wears down a bit and isn't quite as thin and pointy. Another good option seems to be Faber Castell's Gold Faber line of colored pencils (I bought a few of them open stock from a local art store to try them out). As they seem to have attributes similar to the Prismacolor's:they have good color laydown,they are pretty easy to blend (maybe just SLIGHTLY less easy than the Prismacolors) and they also have pretty good color quality and vibrancy. While they seem to be a bit harder to break and/or wear down,in contrast to the Prismacolors. They also have both the standard AND a watercolor pencil line as well. The watercolor pencil line being pretty good as well.

      Funny how people are so divided on these.
      I avoid touching my prismas now, they are such bad quality and if you're doing hair it better be short strokes or you end up with a nice crisp line that trails in a mess. I have about 10 different things I was drawing and colouring with prismas and they are all unfinished because it was such a chore to get the colour to look nice. Perfect example is this video, the skin tone I would have quit and tossed it in the unfinished pile of shame.
      I really want to try Holbein now, they reviewed very well and their acrylics are awesome.

      @recoveringsoul755 Před 4 lety

      If you run out of a pencil in Prisma, like white, can you buy a new one? Or do you need to get an entire new SET? That would be a deciding factor for me. Plus I'm not as young as I was once, or strong. And if a softer pencil is easier that would be good too.
      I've also heard you can microwave a broken pencil and the lead inside the barrel will mend itself.

    • @Conda17
      @Conda17 Před 4 lety

      Recovering Soul - maybe it depends on where you live considering amazon in different regions keeps stock of different items but individual prismacolor pencils are harder to come across than individual polychromos. All colours are available on amazon in most western regions and i buy individual polychromos all the time depending on what i need. By the way, watch out for that microwave trick. I’ve tried it with prisma’s and the numbering on the pencil shaft contained some type of foil and it nearly set alight. Maybe buy a couple of each brand and see what is easier on your hands. Also, unless you are planning to use the burnishing technique which requires heavy pressure then even a harder, oil based pencil like polychromos relies on many lightly applied layers instead of heavy pressure.

    I think arteza set is probably better if you are more experienced. They are tough to blend with so being able to get where you want to quicker color wise on the paper is a plus and experience will give you that. With the prisma color it’s easier to work your way up with layers to the color you want. Which benefits novices (while still being a plus for experienced artists ).
    It’s less of an issue in anime vs drawing portraits/real life … blending and final color is way more important there
    I would say an arteza set and a few critical prisma pencils used together is worth it. Sort of a blend of both or their strengths

      I prefer the arteza side because to me the skin looks smoother. Do you own any faber castell polychromos? Might be interesting to compare them with the arteza, because their also harder than prismas. Sorry for my bad english.

    Wow!! So glad that I found your channel. I have been going back & forth about buying the Arteza 120 vs. Prisma 150. I already have the 72 & 36 set of prismacolors but I get so frustrated bc I feel like I'm ALWAYS sharpening my pencils over coloring. I also have several pencils in both sets that are split all the way down. I do love prisma but I'm wondering if I just need to go ahead & buy the Artezas now. I'm no professional. I just use them for card making.

    Polychromos. Do you think the arteza colored pencil would be a nice addition or would it be a waste of money? :) nice Video btw!

    For you which is better to do some realistic draw? For example for portraits, faces, animals and other things definable as realistic. Because they look awesome for an anime character, are they good for a realistic face? Even if Prismacolor are very expensive

    I always used prismas (set of 150 for 100€) they break kind of easier but since I've gotten myself an electrical sharper they're doing better and once I'm out of a color I can easily pre-order without rebuying the whole thing, they're also easy to blend with another. I just bought a Arteza set of 120 for 72€ (62£) and I'm still trying to figure things out since I just received them so I'm watching your video here lol also I'm afraid there is no website offering Arteza so once I'm out, I'm out. Not like with prismas 😪

      Hey! I'm 12 too but I only have cheap color pencils but my drawings still turn out great I only started using markers(also cheap) and color pencils yesterday and drew izuku midorya(infinite 100% version) and I colored it and my sister thought I printed it😂 I don't even know how that's possible with CHEAP MARKERS AND COLORS!!!! but color blending wasn't ever a problem for me its actually really easy but try making a chart with some color combinations just think very carefully about all the different textures and try as much as times as you like until you get a result that satisfies you and try rubbing a tissue around your drawing to smooth out the colors but one section at a time so the colors don't blend and spoil the drawing and when shading try using a darker version of the same color to make it look better I hope this helps you!
