Since Meridional, every album is flawless to me. Not a single bad song and not a single part of the albums that I don't love, though I think ALL HAIL is my favorite. I will need to fully listen to the new album though.

I'm on board with O-God to present. Never been able to get into the older songs, besides Memphis and the modern live version of I used to hate cellphones.
Still shocked, there's a ton of people out there that think Cory-era NJ is worse than the work of teenagers. Insane.

I might be extremely biased but The Aftermath is my favourite to this day. They took Botch's approach and math influence and made it so groovy and easy to comprehend while being so fucking punishing, that Liarscenic makes me wanna jump into moshpit instantly. I would argue that Disconnektie is just perfect in the middle, it's a much needed breather before the next song and a beautiful one.

    • @MichaelM1349

The aftermath is also my favorite. You describe it perfectly. I listen to a ton of brutal death metal nowadays, but the heaviness of this album rivals death metal at times. I’m always going to be partial to the first three Norma Jean albums- just because they remind me of such good times. but they have some good stuff on their newer albums. I like his ranking, but I would switch the S tiers and the A tiers.

Hey man wasn't sure how to contact you. I suck at the Internet. But this randomly showed up in my CZcams feed. I really appreciate the way you went through all the albums. I should know because I was in that band for over a decade ha. Hi my name is Jake. It was very refreshing to hear your breakdown of each album, and you weren't so far off. So good on ya mate! And also it brought a lot of nostalgia back to me. There are so many underlining things that even go into song titles ha. What a ride. I appreciate you sir. Thank you!

Norma Jean is such an incredible band. They are rare in that they made a huge impact early on and only continue to get stronger with every release. Such a distinctive sound while managing to still achieve a different vibe with each album. Glad you put Meridional on S tier, it is such an underrated record! Redeemer would probably be S tier for me as well

As with any band with such a long career it's really tough because a band has to compete with past albums and fan nostalgia is a double edged sword! I jumped on this train with Anti Mother which piqued my interest enough to hear more, Meridional was kind of weird to me. I need to listen to it now, it's been a long time! For me all the albums since I have been consistently enjoying alot!

NORMA JEAN!!! YAS! To me, their top album will always be Bless the Martyr, because it was their introduction and made me fall instantly in love (only a handful of bands have done that EVEEEER). Right next to that top spot would be Wrongdoers as when it dropped I couldn't stop listening to it on a daily basis. As for the newest jam, that opening track "1994", kicks you right in the spine if you have a decent sound system in your car. It has that deep, heavy, kind of riff that just makes you smile and want to do bad things. I'm excited to really get into the entire album as I only listened to it twice in its entirety (while driving). I'm enjoying it so far and can't wait to see them in a couple of days.

I agree with almost everything in the video, I think it's amazing how the band can be versatile and innovative even with this significant amount of albums, the only thing that would change in the rank is the legendary bless the martyr... he's easy S-tier but otherwise I'm accordingly. about this last album i already fell in love again lol, the math elements mixed with other progressions and melodies captivated me a lot, the breakdowns have the right energy also in general i don't know if i can consider norma jean a metalcore band but classifying this album as " chaotic metalcore/mathcore" I think it's the best of the year so far, maybe with the prog metalcore from aviana or the djent metalcore from oceans to alaska they will take this post but for now norma jean remains at the top

  • @dadhx8

My rankings are pretty much the same as yours with maybe one difference: I'd swap O'God with Meridonial. So glad you called out Charaterantula because that song is massively underrated and hit's like a train. Like you, I was a bit disappointed with The Anti-Mother at the time. I listened to it for awhile, but it didn't hold up compared to the older releases so I kind of drifted away from Norma Jean for awhile. I skipped over Meridonial at it's time. Then in 2013 when Wrongdoers dropped I gave them another chance and holy shit was I glad I did. As you said, Wrongdoers absolutely slapped. One underrated banger on there I want to call out was "The Lash Whistled Like A Singing Wind". It's only 1 minute and hits almost like a grindcore track with an absolutely crushing breakdown at the end. *chefs kiss*. I only then went and revisited Meridonial after my confidence in NJ was restored. But then, I lost interest a second time with their recent releases. Just couldn't get into them.

  • @bjackson1975
    @bjackson1975 Před rokem +1

First, thanks for taking the time to put this together, NJ deserves more recognition than they get. I'm one to rank the early stuff lower than the newer. Polar Similar is perfection to me, it's sonic umami - (S Tier). Death Rattle - S Tier. I'd put All Hail - Fantastic. Meridonal - Fantastic, nearly S Tier. Anti Mother and Wrongdoers in the Great category. Not a huge fan of Josh Scroggin's vocal style, personal preference. The early albums have iffy production and that's just hard for me to look past, I never spin them. The main thing with Norma Jean is the perspective of the listener. NJ is doing so much in the music, heavy, math, emotion, soul, groove, deep, cerebral that it depends on what one is looking for. There's enough substance that a listener can dig deep and find something new for a long time. That's unique. I find the new stuff to be more cerebral and soul-nourishing than the old and perhaps that's where my scoring system differs. Thanks again for taking the time.

So I'm a Throwing Myself/Bless the Martyr loyalist. Never really made the jump to the new vocalist and general evolution of their sound. I've dabbled in some post-Bless the Martyr stuff (Oh God the Aftermath of course, and Redeemer and here and there a bit)-enough to recognize some of the tracks, but not enough to know what I'm getting into when I hit play on one of those albums. And I always kinda hit that place where I'm like, "This is fine, but I could be listening to Bless the Martyr instead."
Anyway, on a whim (mostly because I was majorly obsessed with digging up early 2000s Norma Jean live performances earlier this summer-there's some ridiculously great shows on CZcams), I decided to listen to Deathrattle while driving to work and... it was pretty good? Like, shockingly so. I'm actually excited to listen to it a few more times and see how it goes down. I might use this as an excuse to backtrack through their whole discography.
Anyway, great vid, even if we disagree a bit on Luti-Kriss, lol. (Maaaaaybe most of my love is nostalgia, but I'll die on that hill.)

Chino's has a part in Surrender your Sons that almost feels like he's going off key and it ruins the whole thing. Bless the Martyr and Kiss the Child is top - tier metalcore. Redeemer is up there, in my eyes, as well.
I’ve always wondered if people ever noticed how identical NJ were to that of Botch when it boiled down to their earlier releases, especially when it comes down to NJ’s sound and vocalization of Cory and Josh.

@@MetalTrenches redeemer had stronger song writing in my opinion and much more emotional intensity. the drums were much more complex, cause Daniel Davison (i would argue, the drum fills on Redeemer are one of the best of all time) and the bass/guitar work is simply unmatched in their discography with the production. I love Meridional, but it lacks a lot compared to Redeemer.
