Straight originality and great creativity without the dirty language.. Pure and true...miss those early days of hip hop. These guys were the among the early pioneers in the foundation of hip hop. Much respect.
Back in the day we were talking about social issues and having fun. All you needed were two turntables and a microphone and you were good to go. Those were the good ol days. RIP Big bank Hank.
One of the best rap-battle cuts ever produced! I was in 10th grade when this came out and me and my homies used to crank this up on our ghetto-blaster! Some of the best years growing up.
This was pure Funk-R&B at its finest. I know rappers like 50 cent and the newer Brotha's like to boast about how they've revolutionized rap music, but these guys started it all and as far as I'm concerned they still run the tables. Why?? Because these guys were true artist- no bullshit, no egos, no "who's more talented," it was all about the music. That's what's gone today. It's not art anymore, it's just a whole bunch of friggin noise!!
The Furious Five & The SugarHill Gang are pure rap groups that ruled the East Coast of NY. The Furious Five Melle Mel and Flash The SugarHill Gang Mike, Hank and Guy RIP Hank
This was before Grandmaster Flash became famous for his song "The Message", which didn't come out until a year later. Sugarhill Gang didn't get a whole lot of attention apart from "Rapper's Delight" and "Apache". This was at a time when MTV didn't show any hip hop acts. Run DMC was the first act to get showcased on the MTV cable network, and they became overly popular and famous. This was the true Old School. De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest and those guys who came many years later were considered New School. Still, this far surpasses anything Hip Hop has out today.
My co-workers thought I was crazy when I mentioned this song due to two others co-workers had a little bit of a feud with one another. But we got a good laugh how this pandemic is actually getting to us in retail grocery. 😂
This is a "remaster" that is terrible compared to the original. Fortunately, the original master is available on the Furious Five's "Message from Beat Street" compilation album, and that's the version I play on Spotify whenever I want to jam to this song. (Or, I could also play the original vinyl, which I have. lol)
I wish i would not listend to this it was so much better when i was a kid and in my head.. this song was horrible horrible and I'm a big Sugar Hill Gang fan and a big Grandmaster Flash and the furious five fan.. but y'all could agree it's a horrible song even if it takes you back in time listening to it now is just horrible
A west coast back story..... we always would argue who was better, Sugarhill or the Furious 5? It got so crazy at Bret Harte, that we actually got in a fight... literally! And Lawd..... when this song came out.... we started fighting again, because some of us was all for the furious 5, some was for sugarhill. However, when that last line SUGARHILLLLLLLLLLLL hit, everybody hushed & turned that line into a dance. The hood was the hood, but it wasn't as bad then.
I dang near lost my mind when this came out. A classic clean battle.

I don't know about horrible. It wasn't Sugarhill's best but it was a rocker nevertheless.
