In todays video, Austin will be performing and explaining a DSG service on his MKV GTI. NOTE this isn't an easy job, so follow each step correctly. Most cars you just have to lower it then raise it and hold it until the window motor clunks then it’s good to go

I'm just about to purchase GTi Mk5 (as a second hobby car really) and this was one of the videos that went into my bookmarks. Very clear instructions. I do my own maintenance on my vehicles as much as I can and this didn't seem to be overly complicated, but very nicely explained the procedure :) Thumbs up. And threw in a sub as well.

And of course that procedure to reset windows and electronics, since the car itself is still stranger to me :) I used to own mk2, which was my first ever car, but other than that, I haven't had a VW :D Looking forward to that GTi. Seems like a very potent vehicle to mod and tune.

Excellent video, I'm about to be the proud owner of a mk5 with a dsg. I prefer to do my own maintenance as much as possible so I was NOT going to go to a dealer for this

so u did it without the obd11 to tell u the Trans temp. u used the coolant temp gauge to guestimate the temp to start doing the gears ? im about to do my first DSG service n i dont wanna buy a expensive scanner yet. so ive been searching YTs if its possible to do it withouit the scanner like u did here

@@RatchetWrenches I'm get mines done at a shop but the shop I got to is pretty reliable been going there since 2011 but I'm buy the parts from vw dealer ship found maintenance history 1st owner never never change it rather be safe then sorry
charles Lawrence gotcha yeah no I understand! Makes perfect sense. Smart tho I highly recommend sticking with oem vw parts. From being a vw tech I’ve learned. I’ve seen aftermarket parts fail way too often. Unfortunately vw parts are pricey but they’re def worth the investment

questions about your radio did it come with amp output and remote wire for amp and does your staring well controls work with that?
brandon / brembo dossantos it’s actually came with everything needed to match OEM. So yes the steering wheel controls work. I actually used to have my subwoofer and amp hooked up before I sold them. So you can easily hook up aftermarket stereos if you’re trynna do that!
Could you use a siphon pump to drain it out from the top?
Yes you can if it can create the vacuum. Aka find a hose small enough to go over the hole
Can you explain where you placed the jack stands since these cars have no other area to place the jack at the same time.

Hey man, Near driver footwells u hsve metal plates for the left and right. I’m trying to search for footwell pedal plates etc but cant find what u have. Any advice on what they are precisely called?
They come stock in the car but if you Google “mkv GTI driver footrest Pedal” it’ll come up with a bunch. Mostly used but that’s the name they go by

That’s a great question I’m truly not sure but if not it’s not a big deal that reset for the window and steering wheel is super easy

I have a question on my mk5 gti when I put it on drive it kinda kicks I’m not sure what the problem is can anyone help me
Could be a misfire, any check engine lights?
How much oil did it take? I assume you filled until simply no more would go in? Is 5 litres enough or do you need all 6 containers of oil?
I don’t remember exactly how many it took. I believe I show in this video. But you measure what comes out and put that back in. You can overfill these easily. It’s not like doing a regular diff job or something where when filled it leaks out. Make sure to measure how much comes out and put that exact amount in
I think you might have missed the last bit which is - once you’ve run the gearbox to temperature you open the drain plug and open until you get a small steady stream. Then close it. Otherwise you might have overfilled.

I’ve been looking everywhere for non-diagnostic methods to measure transmission oil temp, even my BlueDriver cannot measure it because there’s no function for it yet. Are you able to measure and time how exactly long? Me and hundreds of others would be appreciative of this! Thanks bro
@Non_living What I have done in the past when using the bottom fill method is make a pinhole in the plastic line near the transmission pan and stick a meat thermometer in there. Then let the car idle and check your thermometer until it's warm enough and you're good to go.
How often does this oil need changing? I was told at 40,000 mile service, would that be right? I have a 2015 Golf GT
Yea the maintenance interval is ever 40k but tbh you can get away with around 50k!

@@kingatecavies no problem and I mean it shouldn’t really matter for temp since it’s not exposed to outside elements. If you’re doing it yourself I’d say do it during the summer so you don’t have to do it in the cold haha but really up to you!
how much time it took to fill up 5 liters of gear oil ?
It really varies honestly I’ve done so where it’s only 10-15 minutes but I’ve done some where it’s 30 mins or more. The gravity feed sometimes takes a while

Yeah this is the dsg Trans so the manual trans is actually way easier, like way way easier. Not so sophisticated as this

You don't have to worry so much about putting in a little too much fluid, theres a vent hole that will let excess fluid out. VW calls for 5.2L, I usually use 5L assuming some is in the filter etc and its about right.
Did you think to maybe dropping the fluid first you wouldn't have the filter leaking that badly
For a GoPro there is not as much lens distortion as I would expect with a camera like that. Maybe it shows when the video is shot more out in the open. Some cameras like that have a really hideous lens distortion.
Yeah the go pro honestly doesn’t have that bad of distortion just the audio quality isn’t good at all
@@RatchetWrenches I just tend to notice that because I am not used to seeing video from similar cameras. I once tried the ION action camera (looks kinda like a flash light) as a dash camera. I took it back the next day, I could not get over that fish eye distortion. It was noticeable.

It’s supposed just to drain it properly but as long as you put in what you take out you won’t have any issues. Just make sure you don’t overfill it by putting more in

Could have filled it from the filter housing and then removed the bottom bolt again to allow it to set it's own dsg fluid level with the cone insert like your suppose to do 🤷
You only need to do that if you’re not measuring what comes out. I’m putting in exactly what came out so it won’t be overfilled or under filled. But yes to do it the way from factory you do that and you have to get the trans to the certain temp interval and remove the first bolt to let the excess drop out.
