Bomberman '94 (TurboGrafx-16) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

  • A playthrough of Hudson Soft's 1993 puzzle-action game for the NEC PC Engine (TurboGrafx-16), Bomberman '94.
    Played through the "normal mode" single player story game.
    Hudson Soft had some incredible titles on the TG16, as you might expect from a company developing games for a system that they themselves created. It was unrivaled for 16-bit shooters in the early 90s, but what many people didn't realize is that the system also hosted the best Bomberman games around. While the SNES Super Bomberman series was an incredible run of games in its own right, Bomberman '94 was, in my opinion, the best of the 16-bit era titles.
    Not only did it push the Turbo's hardware well past what anyone expected in its presentation (these graphics are pretty amazing - just compare this version to its shoddy Genesis port!), but it also established many conventions that other games would eventually reap the benefits of. It nicely develops the anime aesthetic and the animal helper system introduced in Bomberman '93, adds some new powerups of its own, allowed for 5-player multiplayer - none of it was *new*, per se, but it was all so refined and polished that the following games tended to mimic this one rather than expand on it meaningfully - it wasn't until Saturn Bomberman that the series saw as significant as a leap as it did with Bomberman '94.
    If you'd like to see Sega's US version for the Sega Genesis, check it out here: www.youtube.co...
    I can't recommend it highly enough, and while it did only come out in Japan, it's easy enough to come by a copy for your own personal use nowadays!

    If you defeat the final boss and keep your Louie alive you get an extra cutscene there. In the normal cutscene everything is exploding, Buglear collapses on the floor and Bomberman leaves in his ship. In the extended Louie cutscene Bomberman and Louie board the ship together but now it's too overloaded and can't take off the ground with both of them. Louie jumps out and urges Bomberman to go alone, which Bomberman refuses and tries to get Louie back in the ship. Louie has to stun Bomberman with a kick and push him into his ship, only then it flies away while Louie stays behind and watches him through the glass floor. The screen fades to white and then you hear Louie's last squeal (the same sound bit when you mount a Louie).
    It's so tragic but I love that they actually made an extra animation for Louie, it's a nice bonus to the normal cutscene since it's really hard to keep Louie all the way to the end. I'd much prefer a happier ending but I guess the programmers realized they need to somehow get rid of Louie before the end credit sequence because there Bomberman flies alone in his ship and the animation is too complex to add Louie, hence he had to go.

    Bomberman '94 is easily my favorite Bomberman of the 16-bit generation - so many game elements introduced here were featured prominently in later installments, and it's a damn nice looking game for the Turbo!

      @Bloodreign1 Před 5 lety +4

      Not rabbits, Louies, and yes, there are other games with them in the series. Super Bomberman 3, 4, and 5 SNES/SFC I believe has them (4 and 5 sure do), and Saturn Bomberman contain them. And all of these are awesome. Some people may not be high on Super Bomberman 5, but I find it highly entertaining.

    • @Diwasho
      @Diwasho Před 4 lety +2

      @@Bloodreign1 Louies aren't in SBM4, there's a special gimmick unique to that game where you hatch defeated monsters from eggs and then ride them which essentially does what Louies did but in a more roundabout and limited way. It's my least favorite Super Bomberman title overall, I'm glad Louies returned in SMB5 better than ever.
      @NintendoComplete completely agreed, even though Super Bomberman 5 is the better game BM94 is the one I replayed the most. The level design and difficulty curve are far better than in any of the SNES games, it's way more fun and less frustrating. Not to mention the monster designs and animations are so good.

    • @Bloodreign1
      @Bloodreign1 Před 3 lety +1

      @@Diwasho Yeah the hatched animals are actually enemies you battle against, had to play my copy of Super Bomberman 4 to realize they weren't Louie's. There's also animal rides in Neo Bomberman on the Neo Geo as well, shame that didn't see a Neo CD release.

    stage 2: achiachi yama (achiachi mountain)
    stage 3: buku buku no umi (bukubuku sea)
    stage 4: kurakura shiro (kurakura castle)
    stage 5: YukiYuki land (snowy land)
    (and i guess there might be some meaning as wordplay in the names too)

    • @NintendoComplete
      @NintendoComplete  Před 7 lety +4

      Simone Bernacchia Definitely. It you look at the English Genesis version, the level names aren't translations (because they're word plays and don't work in English) but just made up stuff. The one they called Jammin' Jungle made me laugh.

    • @NintendoComplete
      @NintendoComplete  Před 7 lety +4

      Simone Bernacchia Simone Bernacchia Oh and those word plays. Achi is like the "ouch!" noise you make when you get feel a sudden sharp pain, and it's also a slang form of atsui, which means hot, so Achiachi is an amusing way to name a volcano.
      Bukubuku is onomotopeia for the noise the water in a pan makes when it's boiling over, go I'm guessing the joke has to do with the fact that he's fighting with bombs underwater.
      Kurakura is a word for how you feel when you suddenly get really dizzy. It also sounds like Kamakura, which was the name of the early samurai era when the feudal lords had those massive castles that overlooked all of the territory around it, like the eye of Sauron. Since the final stage looks like it's on the roof of the castle, it's probably the sheer height of where they are standing that makes it feel 'kurakura'

    • @NintendoComplete
      @NintendoComplete  Před 7 lety +5

      Simone Bernacchia Morimori is the sound of when you are power eating - think Homer Simpson at the all-you-can-eat buffet. Maybe it's a statement on how destructive Bomberman's attempts to be a hero are? Like the flame that consumes the forest hungrily, or something. Just a guess.
      And for yukiyuki, I'm not sure what they were going for. Yuki has different meanings depending on which kanji you use. It means snow, of course, but it can also be luck, happiness, or bravery. Probably others too that I'm not thinking of. So anything beyond that, who knows? I certainly don't.
      Then again my Japanese has rusted pretty badly, so maybe someone else would know better than I.

      @RoddyDev Před 4 lety +1

      森 (mori) means forest

    8:09 If you game over to this boss you may as well reset. Because his gimmick is he runs away when you get close you CANNOT defeat him with only one bomb with a range of two, and it’s the monkey himself that’s your target, not the robot banana. It’s a good thing he’s the first boss

    Best TG Bomberman game, right here. Simply because you can get more than one powerup in each stage that isn't a boss fight, for example.
    Just like in the SNES games (all 5 of them!), thank you very much!
    Even with good music (which the SNES have plenty of, too.), Bomberman 94 is the only one to truly make this work, in terms of stages, gameplay, and plentifulness in powerups to help you beat it to death, IMHO.
    The first Bomberman on this console was just a blueprint towards something better someday; Bomberman 93 has better music than 94, but only being able to collect one powerup per stage at a time is just annoying. Downright annoying - the stage design is alright, but also, again - simply just not as good nor truly as memorable as this game's (Bomberman 94), honestly.
