This remains the greatest cover of this song ever performed. It's absolutely perfect. The notes that Willie Watson hits to accent the harmonies in the last verse always give me the chills.

Thank you for sharing this memory with the world. It is sucha perfect example of what real love looks like once the only way we have left to express it is find in our experience of grief. The loss of someone we truly love is singing that never heals, but I pray that peace, understanding and comfort will continue to be cultivated in all of the spaces that are left after grief has fulfilled it's purpose. There is no doubt in my mind that your dad enjoyed your company immensely while he was here, and that even death is not strong enough to keep him from doing so now and always. Blessings.

Over the last few years, this song grew on me more and more until it became my favorite song. I had always liked this song, but I guess new perspectives and more life experiences change how a song sits with us when it hits our soul. I have heard hundreds of versions of this song over the years by so many different artists, but I've never found another one that I enjoy more than this one.
I’m 22 I’ll turn 23 in just a few days. Song always bring a tear to my eye in the best way possible.
I saw The Band perform this song a couple of times many years ago. They were the groundbreakers, and great at doing what they did. But this version, with musicians this talented, is the best ever. Just wonderful.

I read a few comments before I listened to this because every time someone covers it they always say it's the ultimate cover. Well they're usually all decent but not what you'd call close to being the ultimate cover. Couldn't ever be because Gillian and these guys have proven this version is the best cover I've ever heard and will probably remain the ultimate cover of one of the best songs ever written. Fantastic performance and the only thing that could make it better would be Mavis Staples off to the side clapping her hands and singing with the voice of spirit, emotion, and faith. Gillian Welch is a gift to music.
