For a long time, one of my worst habits was drinking energy drinks. I'd drink two or three a day - and I HATED the fact that I did it, but I couldn't stay disciplined enough to quit. I kept doing it for years.
Finally, I got fed up enough with the consequences to finally give the habit up once and for all.
In this video, I'll share some of the techniques that helped me break this habit - and many others since. Whatever your bad habits are, you'll be able to use these strategies to quit them as well.

I think that a better approach than the 30 day challenge is the one day challenge. "Today, I'm not going to (am going to) do X." It's a very simple and effective way to make a change. I started using it 4 months ago to stop going to McDonald's. Every time I see one, I remind myself that today I'm not going to McDonald's. it requires almost no willpower.

What has helped me recently is vowing not to eat badly for a week/month, and then adding another week on top of it. Yes yes but now I've reached a dilemma. Because I'd be bummed out when I lose my streak but I feel no need to start again because I'd lose my streaks constantly. That's my problem. Any vows to myself I don't take seriously and because I'm suicidal I don't really care about anything. Thomas and everyone else have just been saying to just do it. Nike was right. Sure. But I really don't want to and even though I really care, I don't change it. That's the question I'm looking for an answer to. We've stepped into a fractal.

End Drug Prohibition what you eat affects your skin because when you eat a lot of white sugar and other unhealthy foods, you eat less nutritious food. Enough protein, vitamins and antioxidants directly affect your skin but if all you're eating is sugary cereal and chocolate, you're not getting the nutrients your skin needs to be healthy. That's why diet DOES affect skin and and skin disorders. Although, you are correct in the sense that diet won't heal acne if it's hormonal. I also agree that having clear skin doesn't fix anyones problems unless it's painful pimples they're worried about.

Great video! I've used all of these methods before actually, can confirm that they work. This past October I did sober October and it went so well that I've stayed sober through November as well. For November I gave up facebook and that's gone really well also. During those 30 days you can really dig deep inside yourself and figure out what caused the bad habits in the first place. I am still working on my sugar addiction. It's really hard during this time of year when it seems like everywhere you go, somebody is offering you a slice of cake, pie, or cookies. Sigh. All I can do is NOT keep sugary snacks in my own home and keep lots of healthy snacks on hand.

It's really hard to do it when you don't have confidence and is always questioning your efforts. If you have clinical depression or anxiety there is no shame in medication and a therapist or support group that works for you. Then there’s the concept of changing your sad or anxious state of mind by changing the thoughts or beliefs that cause them to a more accurate perspective. Usually a depressive thought is a very slanted view of a situation that leads one to believe there’s nothing to be done and thus, believing helplessness causes feelings of depression. I’m describing cognitive behavior therapy, and there’s great books and therapists to teach very applicable ways to untangle thoughts to cope with any negative feelings in life. Hope this tiny bit leads you to more answers.

I'm still in the middle of the book but I'm really loving it. At the same time I'm beginning to listen to your podcasts when doing daily things like brushing the teeths and eating breakfast and it started to change some thoughts I had in my mind about the subjects you talk about. Also during the boring routines of going to the underground, I now bring that book and it stopped me from being all the time on facebook. I still have other bad habits I would like to end like being always late or sleeping in the morning but little by little I see some changes on my routines and habits and that's all thanks to you! Alright, I'll add my 2 cents about my own experiences with bad habits:
First and foremost, some habits just die out without you necessarily doing anything for it. I used to bite my nails for years and at some point it just started dying down to a point where I only rarely do it nowadays and if I do so, I go to the bathroom afterwards to fix it. I also realized that I only ever did it when I was bored so that is some information I could have used to combat that vice deliberately.
Secondly, some habits can just become so annoying for you that you are sick of them just like that without needing willpower to quit. I used to browse a couple of 'funny' sides every day but got annoyed at this taking up so much time each day so one day I was just so pissed at this waste of time that I just stopped. The same happened with facebook, wasting so much time with pointless refreshing the feed also got me to just quit.
Thirdly, you don't necessarily have to kill a habit, just modifying it can do the trick as well. Thomas already mentioned the cookie story which is similar to my habit in question, whereas analyzing why you perform those actions in the first place is the key. For me it was drinking Cappuccino....5-10 cups a day. I just love having something to drink, preferably something warm, at my desk almost all the time. Figuring that out, the fact that it's not the Cappuccino itself I was after but just having something ready to drink all the time allowed me to simply switch to tea where it doesn't matter when I drink that much, at least not with the teas I am drinking. Admittedly, between the switch was a vacation where I didn't have access to that habit in the first place which probably made the switch significantly easier that it would have been otherwise. I could even go so far and scrap the tea for simple water if I wanted to. In conclusion, finding out why you do something in the first place can be severely helpful.

For me personally, the best way to "break a bad habit" is to stop it from even becoming one in the first place. Any sort of habit is born gradually, just as you basically mentioned. It doesn't just appear out of nowhere. But obviously, we can't always stop something bad from becoming a habit. That's where we need to put in the work, which increases the more we allow the bad habit to take over. Nice video, by the way.

I've had a soda problem for many many years by now and I'm fighting it like this, applying the idea of "path of least resistance":
I always have a bottle of soda at home because if I don't I immediately get a craving to go out and buy some, usually resulting in a binge.
But instead of placing it next to me as I've used to I've started placing them at the bottom of my desk in the far back and instead have a water bottle right next to me.
Now whenever I feel thirsty, I'm more inclined to take the path of least resistance to the bottle of water since that'll solve the problem of my thirst, only very rarely reaching down to grab the bottle of soda. While I haven't stopped entirely yet, I went down from binging like 20 liters in a week down to just about 2 liters and I intend to bring it down even further than that, eventually quitting.
Appreciate your content as it's really opening my eyes in many aspects of my life.
