For a long time, one of my worst habits was drinking energy drinks. I'd drink two or three a day - and I HATED the fact that I did it, but I couldn't stay disciplined enough to quit. I kept doing it for years.
Finally, I got fed up enough with the consequences to finally give the habit up once and for all.
In this video, I'll share some of the techniques that helped me break this habit - and many others since. Whatever your bad habits are, you'll be able to use these strategies to quit them as well.

Damn my bad habit is watching productivity videos on CZcams...
Craig Davison what the hell, mine too😂
Craig Davison there are much worse habits
Yeah same here but as said below there are worse habits but the time just flitters away so quickly. The time can be used to get out and do different things, meet people learn new things practically.
Same.
Lol 😂 😂
my main addiction is youtube.... spend way to much time here.
Pick and hour in the day where u allow ur self to be on CZcams
Edit: an*
i just limit it to 30 min per day with focused timer and i disabled recommendations (y) works great
lol well then u clearly don't need *my* advice... like how is 30 minutes a day way too much time!? Anyway, i had no idea you could disable recommendations though. thanks for the tip
Rockie Smithson how can you disbanded recommendations?

I’m 19 and all my child hood friends do drugs and drink very regularly. This summer I’ve decided to distance myself and focus on the goals I had as a kid. I leave for A&M later this summer and I hope to reach my full potential. If I can do it so can anybody else. Good luck to anyone reading this.
I don't know you but I'm proud of you and I hope your accomplishing your goals! Gig 'em Aggies 👍

Break your bad habit more quickly by moving to 8:40
Thanks alot, mine was basically procrastination 😂😭😭😭
They are trying so hard to get watchtime, but you can't blame them because that's what the Yt algorithm promotes!

To be fair he did talked about a lot of good information such as why we create bad habits, why they stick ( cue- routine- reward-craving) and gave an example from his expierence and such
That's just silly.
Speaking of 30-day challenges, I'm going to break my bad habit of skipping exercise. For the next 30 days, I'm going to either lift or do some sort of cardio every single day, and I'll be posting a picture on Instagram each day with a progress update to prove it. If you want to join in, you can post your own pics with #cig30, or just comment on my pic and tell me if you stuck to your goal.

rt tr this video isn't about procrastination but how to break a bad habbit
this is rather describing what happens on almost every Thomas Frank video
It's not a video about procrastination.
I think that a better approach than the 30 day challenge is the one day challenge. "Today, I'm not going to (am going to) do X." It's a very simple and effective way to make a change. I started using it 4 months ago to stop going to McDonald's. Every time I see one, I remind myself that today I'm not going to McDonald's. it requires almost no willpower.
+Christopher Tilley good point - one day at a time ;)
That backfired for me.... because I would really look forward to going the next day. What has helped me recently is vowing not to eat badly for a week/month, and then adding another week on top of it. I went three weeks without buying fast food, and now I can afford to get purple streaks in my hair, which is something I have wanted to do for a long time.
Very good
Stephanie Elizabeth yeah, then you dont want to loose all the hard the mental work you have been doing to keep free for 4 weeks so you take another week, and then another. And slowly your habits begin to fade. It becomes a habit not do something.
Yes yes but now I've reached a dilemma. Because I'd be bummed out when I lose my streak but I feel no need to start again because I'd lose my streaks constantly. That's my problem. Any vows to myself I don't take seriously and because I'm suicidal I don't really care about anything. Thomas and everyone else have just been saying to just do it. Nike was right. Sure. But I really don't want to and even though I really care, I don't change it. That's the question I'm looking for an answer to. We've stepped into a fractal.
Thomas: I actually have a pretty bad habit
Me: Oh wow he's not a perfect robot

WONDERFUL video, Thomas!! I think this is one of my favorites. This is so well structured and useful!
So helpful to watch at the beginning of 2021 ✨
Thank you for posting your old acne photo. Your skin looks so clear now and I'm encouraged! I'm 4 days in on a No Sugar challenge and I know I'm gonna love finally having clear skin! 🙌😁
Keep at it! :)
you can do it!!! 💪💪👑
Priskit u go girl xd
End Drug Prohibition what you eat affects your skin because when you eat a lot of white sugar and other unhealthy foods, you eat less nutritious food. Enough protein, vitamins and antioxidants directly affect your skin but if all you're eating is sugary cereal and chocolate, you're not getting the nutrients your skin needs to be healthy. That's why diet DOES affect skin and and skin disorders. Although, you are correct in the sense that diet won't heal acne if it's hormonal. I also agree that having clear skin doesn't fix anyones problems unless it's painful pimples they're worried about.
Rememeber to wash your teeth and skin every day (showering), wash hands everytime you come back from outside or touched something unclean or what you suspect to be unclean (no need to panic)
As always, thanks immensely for your videos. They are not only informative, but never fail to motivate me as well.
You look even better than the photoshopped photo of you! :)
I love that you dont just tell us the details but you actually partake in the methods and tips you suggest which i havent actually seen any self help youtubers do before.
I don't know what I'd do without your videos and podcasts, Thomas. Thank you for all your hard work!
"What it lies in our power to do, it lies in our power not to do." Love this quote and love your videos! Thanks Thomas!
I wish I had your channel when I was in high school!! Still never too late to try to be a better person.
Thank you soo much for your great content! 💙
Thank you so much. Talking about your energy drink problem helped me a lot as it helped me realise that we all have flaws and we all have the ability to overcome them. All of your videos talk sense each and every time :). Amazing work!
These strategies are actually practical.
Thanks for sharing it.
This video is the best. Changed my life.
I loved all the nice, simple, yet engaging transitions used in this video. Great advice, thanks for taking the time to share this!
what would the world be without people like you @ThomasFrank this video is so useful. THANK YOU!
Great video! I've used all of these methods before actually, can confirm that they work. This past October I did sober October and it went so well that I've stayed sober through November as well. For November I gave up facebook and that's gone really well also. During those 30 days you can really dig deep inside yourself and figure out what caused the bad habits in the first place. I am still working on my sugar addiction. It's really hard during this time of year when it seems like everywhere you go, somebody is offering you a slice of cake, pie, or cookies. Sigh. All I can do is NOT keep sugary snacks in my own home and keep lots of healthy snacks on hand.
Thanks Thomas, I'll try to put it into practice.
Probably the most amazing video on CZcams!!!!!!! As a psychology student motivated by self-improvement, this very nicely and concisely puts together the principles and applications of behavioural analysis! Well done.
I've been having a real hard time getting into the habit of reading again so I thought I'd start by listening to "The Power of Habit" on Audible and now I'm half way done with the book.
Thank you Thomas your videos are time well spent when I put the knowledge into action.
Great timing on the this! I just finished The Power of Habit!
Wow. Me too! O.o
I was about to read it lol
I am watching it Jan 1, 21... looks like any day is a good day as we are always working on improving something 🤗
This video is really helpful, thanks Thomas!
You're welcome :)
Thanks Thomas! I signed up to audible and downloaded your book recommendation. Can't wait to listen to it! Keep up the excellent work!
You talk so concisely and you are so informative of the topic, I honestly thank you so much for spending the time to make this, it really was useful :)
One thing here that wasn't addressed is the question what is habit compared to addiction? And if something that is a part of your life is missing, won't your productivity suffer? At least temporarily?
Hey Thomas, could you make a video about learning something alone? For things we want to learn outside the scope of the college/school or when we have a bad professor
_"Figure it out yourself"_ And like that, three-quarters of CZcams vanished instantaneously.
That's a good idea. Here's an article I wrote on it a while ago: collegeinfogeek.com/self-study/
Coursera, edx and khan academy could help you. This topic does deserve a video.

Thank you very much for sharing all this incredible info for people online! It's amazing seeing a person who reads books and kindly gives out their morals and summaries honestly and efficiently. There should be more people like you in society sharing beneficial experiences honestly setting aside any urge for exploiting them.
I listened to The Power of Habit last winter break, and it's one of my favorite books now. I liked the defining your why part of this video. I need to start doing that.
Hey, Thomas! Can you make a video about how to keep yourself motivated to study when you have problems with depression and anxiety? It's really hard to do it when you don't have confidence and is always questioning your efforts. It would mean a lot to hear your opinion, because most times we can't tell when the lack of commitment is our fault or not... So really if you could help that'd be awesome!
mad bae You have to solve the root of the problem what’s making you upset. Then make an intrinsic motivation, not an external one, for example wanting to be number 1 at the top, simply for the sake of it.
If you have clinical depression or anxiety there is no shame in medication and a therapist or support group that works for you. Then there’s the concept of changing your sad or anxious state of mind by changing the thoughts or beliefs that cause them to a more accurate perspective. Usually a depressive thought is a very slanted view of a situation that leads one to believe there’s nothing to be done and thus, believing helplessness causes feelings of depression. I’m describing cognitive behavior therapy, and there’s great books and therapists to teach very applicable ways to untangle thoughts to cope with any negative feelings in life. Hope this tiny bit leads you to more answers.
The boring ballad of derrig Ever tried the five minutes method? It helps me, usually

Thanks! I'm a freshman at university and your videos do help a lot. Almost all the time I get the highest grades possible and partly that's because of your content. It's really useful and inspiring. Keep up the great work!
Great tips!

I'm on day 10 of a wholefoods plantbased diet. It's been so LONG since I'd been able to control my binge eating urges. Now sticking to this and feeling good. Can't believe it tbh. I've tried so much over the last year.
Congrats Brian! That's a huge achievement. I've gone through binge eating too and it's not easy to kick that bad habit.
I really loved "Power of Habits" - thank you for the summary here, repetition is always great
First of all, thank you for all the videos. I saw that book in a store and I immediately though "I know this! Thomas Frank is always talking about this. I should buy it!". And I did. I'm still in the middle of the book but I'm really loving it. At the same time I'm beginning to listen to your podcasts when doing daily things like brushing the teeths and eating breakfast and it started to change some thoughts I had in my mind about the subjects you talk about. Also during the boring routines of going to the underground, I now bring that book and it stopped me from being all the time on facebook. I still have other bad habits I would like to end like being always late or sleeping in the morning but little by little I see some changes on my routines and habits and that's all thanks to you! I hope you continue doing this and that you have a lot of sucess in life.
Best from Portugal :)
"Do not Falcon Punch random people for 30 days"

Out of curiosity, primarily where did you develop your philosophy, and what pushed you to initially do so? I recently came across your channel and I think the information you're putting out is invaluable. But I'm just curious where you started.
Hello! I really love your video, and it actually will help me a lot to ged rid of all my bad habits! I'm so happy because I've finally found a good coach like you! I'll start my 30-day challenge tomorrow! Thank you so much! Regards from Morocco. Niss.
You always have the best cut aways to your sponsor. They make sense and don’t ruin the entirety of the video. Thank you

I read the power of habit after I watched one of your older videos and you recommended it. I have now quit soda completely 2 months ago, I used to drink a can a day. I lost weight, my acne is better, and soda tastes disgusting to me now. Looking forward to making healthier habits. Great video.
I saw your video on " 10 books every student should read" and I decided to purchase the power of habit as the first one out of the 10.. I'm half way through and I am really enjoying it! Watching this video help to put everything into perspective and gain some additional tips on how to actually break bad habits.
I'm going to quit redbull thanks to this video, wish me luck

Clear, concrete steps and goals defined in this video. Great work. Thanks heaps.
when you procrastinate your procrastination joke
Alright, I'll add my 2 cents about my own experiences with bad habits:
First and foremost, some habits just die out without you necessarily doing anything for it. I used to bite my nails for years and at some point it just started dying down to a point where I only rarely do it nowadays and if I do so, I go to the bathroom afterwards to fix it. I also realized that I only ever did it when I was bored so that is some information I could have used to combat that vice deliberately.
Secondly, some habits can just become so annoying for you that you are sick of them just like that without needing willpower to quit. I used to browse a couple of 'funny' sides every day but got annoyed at this taking up so much time each day so one day I was just so pissed at this waste of time that I just stopped. The same happened with facebook, wasting so much time with pointless refreshing the feed also got me to just quit.
Thirdly, you don't necessarily have to kill a habit, just modifying it can do the trick as well. Thomas already mentioned the cookie story which is similar to my habit in question, whereas analyzing why you perform those actions in the first place is the key. For me it was drinking Cappuccino....5-10 cups a day. I just love having something to drink, preferably something warm, at my desk almost all the time. Figuring that out, the fact that it's not the Cappuccino itself I was after but just having something ready to drink all the time allowed me to simply switch to tea where it doesn't matter when I drink that much, at least not with the teas I am drinking. Admittedly, between the switch was a vacation where I didn't have access to that habit in the first place which probably made the switch significantly easier that it would have been otherwise. I could even go so far and scrap the tea for simple water if I wanted to. In conclusion, finding out why you do something in the first place can be severely helpful.
Good video. I wasn’t even searching for my habit (also energy drinks and nail biting), but still found this video accidentally and it’s very helpful. Thanks a lot.
This is my first "thumbs up" in a long time! You've earned it, great video!

YOUR VIDEOS COULD CHANGE LIVES. you have no idea what you are doing for the world, i subbed.
For me personally, the best way to "break a bad habit" is to stop it from even becoming one in the first place. Any sort of habit is born gradually, just as you basically mentioned. It doesn't just appear out of nowhere. But obviously, we can't always stop something bad from becoming a habit. That's where we need to put in the work, which increases the more we allow the bad habit to take over. Nice video, by the way.
i started watching an 11:11 min video at 11:11pm lol..i just thought id share...

I rub/pick my eyebrows without realising... now I have bald patches in my eyebrows. *help*.
More like an addiction than a habit (there is a dopamine addiction) but people would get offended by that word if it's not a diagnosed disease. Sigh
just take modafinil
Newer research and an emerging group of scientists believe addictions are actually habits or disorders of learning/dopamine reward systems rather than a disease that can't be "cured"

well, your skin is absolutely flawless, and video this is giving me just the perfect amount of motivation, to do my own 30day challenge
Your one of the best CZcamsrs I've ever watched and you endorse the best sites!
I've had a soda problem for many many years by now and I'm fighting it like this, applying the idea of "path of least resistance":
I always have a bottle of soda at home because if I don't I immediately get a craving to go out and buy some, usually resulting in a binge.
But instead of placing it next to me as I've used to I've started placing them at the bottom of my desk in the far back and instead have a water bottle right next to me.
Now whenever I feel thirsty, I'm more inclined to take the path of least resistance to the bottle of water since that'll solve the problem of my thirst, only very rarely reaching down to grab the bottle of soda. While I haven't stopped entirely yet, I went down from binging like 20 liters in a week down to just about 2 liters and I intend to bring it down even further than that, eventually quitting.
Appreciate your content as it's really opening my eyes in many aspects of my life.
