Naruru's natural phosphate reserves once made millionaires of the entire population. Now they're among the world's poor, as sick and destitute as the refugees they're taking in.

Wow! Just 3 decades ago this island nation had the highest GDP per capita and was the envy of the world. Poor leadership, corruptions, poor investments, foreign scammers, etc. turned this utopia into an impoverished rock. Nauru is the modern day story of Atlantis. Much love to the people of Nauru and I wish them the best. Their corrupted leaders should be in jail but instead, they stole the nation's money and are living in the lap of luxury in other countries while Nauruans suffer.

I had lived in Nauru for a long time before. Even as a pure-blood Filipino, It is the home I grew up to know. The first place where I learned and played. The place and reason why I am who I am today. Even though the island was experiencing an economic downturn, I lived my life there happily and with a smile. They were great and loving people. And it even broke my heart to bid the island goodbye as I left for college. What I really want to say is, "Do not judge a book by its cover"

It's tragic what this country has become. In the 1970s, Nauru had the highest GDP per capita of any nation on earth (close to $20,000), even higher than Saudi Arabia's. Less than 40 years later, it's now one of the world's poorest nations. If it ever gets its house in order, the best thing that it can do is become a Pacific Cayman Islands or Liechtenstein because the land is too ravaged from phosphate mining and it's going to be years before the land recovers enough for the country to develop any agricultural base.

We reap what we sow. We Nauruans deserved what we got. We elected the MPs because they gave us what we want - money & smooth bullshit talk. We were not interested in educating ourselves nor interested in working hard. We liked to sit & gossip esp. outside the bank to secure easy loans to buy a landrover or go on shopping sprees overseas. We treated the I-Kiribati & Tuvaluan as inferior. The way I see it, we deserve what we got. The only way out, a national repentance to God almighty.

It's all their fault and it occurred 3 decades ago:
    1)Irrogant
2)Always wasting money like using a dollar as a toilet paper
3)always living luxurious like eating expensive things like a snack and buying an expensive item that import straight from other country.
4)Forget oneself when living indulgently in luxury.
    5)always being wasteful.
6)doesn't know how to be thrifty.
    7)living unhealthy
Serve yourself well and reap what you sow.I almost felt bad about them but "Almost" not entirely.

Mismanagement by them caused this and the only way to get back up is having "true" leaders who are willing to do what they can to bring Nauru forward. Having a proper leader(s) will be a better solution for the long-term than having millions of aids in dollars (which will just be swiped by a corrupted leader). That is, simply, what nations allows themselves to happen when they don't enforce some kind of standards, either towards their population or foreign businesses. In this specific case, they knew the phospate would run out, they created the fund exactly for that day, and yet they still squandered it.
