2-Year-Old Locked Inside Daycare, Mom Was 15 Minutes Late

  • A mother was distraught when she showed up to her child’s daycare a few minutes late to find that her 2-year-old had been locked inside the facility - alone! Stephanie Martinez, who was just 15 minutes late picking up her daughter, understandably freaked out. She called 911 for help, and the operator was shocked at the situation she described. The toddler had to push a chair to the door to stand on, in order to call out to her mother. Stephanie watched helplessly as she called out “Mommy!”

I worked in a (Canadian) daycare/Osc for over ten years, and we had plenty of late pickups over that time period; we always had at least one staff stay late. We’d do a room count frequently with our attendance list, and while sleeping kids do take longer to count, and can be (very) sneaky in looking for a private napping spot, there’s only so many spots they can curl up in.
Closing routines involved taking turns cleaning while the other staff watched the last couple of kids, then after they were each individually signed out as their parents arrived, we’d check each room to be safe; under tables, in cubbies, behind every shelf that wasn’t against a wall, in big enough toy bins with lids, etc. Only _after_ that would we do lights off & lock up.
But my best guess here isn’t that they decided to lock up with the kid inside; I’m betting that one of the staff finished signing out the second to last kid for the day, no one did a room walk-through as they were supposed to, and just assumed all the kids were gone. Then I bet they just signed the kid out and assumed they missed them leave earlier in the day, and locked up. This is literally one of the precautionary scenarios we’re given in our courses and trained against to prevent, so this *never* should’ve happened. It’s just plain negligent.

This is awful. So glad that the little girl was found unharmed and safe. This happened to me 25 years ago. My daughter was 2 also. They were about to close when I got there. There was a sign-in/out sheet that was required. I was told that my daughter had been picked up already. Imagine my shock and surprise when I asked "by who?" There was a short list of people who have permission to pick her up and there was no name on the sign out sheet. I was told "your sister picked her up". Which wasn't true because we hadn't discussed it. So, after a few more minutes of "where's my child", I called the police and my husband. They came right away, did a search and found my daughter soak and wet from the waist down, crying and huddled in the bathroom (unharmed, after I took her to ER to be checked). Whoever took her for a potty break, never came back nor did they bother or notice that she was missing. Had I not gotten there in time, they would've locked the school up for the night. No one took accountability for negligence or excepting blame. I immediately removed my daughter from the school, made up flyers and passed them out in front of the daycare letting other parents know what happens in this place.

I looked up all the news reports on this case because this report and people's comments were so inflammatory I wanted to know more. Just to clarify -- they didn't purposely lock the child inside and leave. They thought she'd already been picked up and the facility was empty. That doesn't excuse what happened or make it right, but people need to know how it actually happened. The facility was closed and locked at 6:20 and the FD was dispatched at 6:28, so the child was there alone for only a minute or two before her mom arrived, tried all the doors and windows, and then called 911. Still a terrible thing to happen to any child and mother no matter how long or short the timeframe was. I would've been frantic, too. I used to work for an after school program, about 3-6 times a year i had to take a child home with me, or drive them to their home because the parents had issues making a pickup. But procedure is always step 1: call or text the usual pickup person, step 2: call the second number if you dont get a response. Step 3 call the program administrator and inform them of the situation. Step 4: call next of kin if included in the notes. Step 5: if still no contact take the child home with you(or drop off at program admins home) step 6: if several hours have passed with no contact then the admin will contact police and social services.
Only had to take a student to my home 3 times only once did one end up staying the night.
About 5 min before our closing time i began calling around to figure out a pickup for an 8 year old girl. No answer from mom or dads cells. After looking around was able to get grandma on Facebook messenger, apparently mom, Dad, and older brother were in a really bad car accident, and grandma lived about 5 hours away. I told her no problem, i would take the girl back to my house for the night and get her to school in the morning.
Everyone lived through that accident though the parents were severely injured, it was a head on collision at about 45 mph with a smaller vehicle. The other driver was at fault, and didnt survive the crash.
Luckily since i hadnt told the girl exactly why she was spending the night (she just thought it was the coolest) she got a good nights sleep, and after i learned in the morning everyone was going to be OK i told her we were going to go see her parents jn the hospital and that they were hurt, but going to be OK. Mom had a cast and lots of bruising, Dad had cuts and bruises, and had been pierced by something in the impact. Brother was suffering a concussion bruising, and some cuts.

@@jessedhc2036 yes the mom was 15 minutes late in the sense of she showed up 15 minutes after they had to close, it's not like she said shed be there half an hour before close and actually showed up 15 minutes before, but they closed anyway, she showed up 15 minutes after they had to close. So what were they meant to do? Lock up and just kick the kid out on to the street? The mother shouldnt have been so late

      @@azimmorganam what is heavier
The mom is 15 minutes late, so the daycare can charge her for it with money or something
Or the daycare just locked up a child in a daycare with no lights and possibly no food, because "the mom was late"
Like, the mom was late that was her fault. But accidentally locking up a child for that?
What problem would the daycare have, if they can just have one person to take care of the child while they close?

@@azimmorganam I hope you don’t have children! Life happens and being late WILL HAPPEN! What kind of person DOESN’T have 15minutes?! There’s also fees installed for people that come late. I think you should take an IQ test asap! I’m not trying to be mean but your logic says you’re not working with a full set!

@@POTC Exactly. Why aren't the parents being held accountable for *THEIR* part? While the daycare facility was obviously wrong, parents need to realize that not everybody is going to put their child on a pedestal the way they do (why should the mother be given special treatments as if rules don't exist)? If everybody else was able to pick their child up on time, why wasn't she?
