    Hey Glen, I built my own 2x12 cab from Baltic Birch plywood I had sitting around. I put a “Swamp Thang” and a “Man-O-War” from Eminence in it. I also made a three piece removable back. I mostly did this just because I love woodworking and wanted something different. I mostly play sludge/doom type music and this thing works great for it in my opinion. I preferred the sound of rig B in the shootout, but wasn't crazy about either sound... Which for me, I think, is that e906. I haven't been able to come around to liking its sound yet.
    The Royer R-10 is my current favorite flavor mic. It's super forgiving to use too, but it's hardly as affordable as the 906 or a 57.

    • @soundman1402
      @soundman1402 Před 6 měsíci +1

      Try a Beyerdynamic M201! It's not flavor at all, actually; just a very hi-fi dynamic mic with a flat response. I've got four of 'em now and I've used them on a lot of sources, and they kick ass on all of them. Also especially good on snare. Downside: Beyerdynamic just jacked the price up $100 this year, so they're now $400 (USD). What changed? The paint. LAME.

    I’m not against changing speakers and getting a different sound at all, and I’m DEFINITELY sold on the difference it can make, but from a listener’s perspective, live and on a record, I’ve never ever said to my self “wow these guys sound the same as everyone else using vintage 30s”. Even though I know probably MOST of my favorite bands over the years have probably used them. I don’t think I can tell when a band or engineer chose a different mic or speakers on the record. Can this get lost in the recording process?

    • @travisspaulding2222
      @travisspaulding2222 Před 6 měsíci +2

      That's because no one says that. If you want to sound unique, it has to be in the music. If you're playing the same shit everyone else is, Greenbacks won't save you. While I agree a speaker change is the most significant change you can put on an amp and your tone, it isn't a magic key to new sounds. That's gotta come from the musician.

    A was more bitey, B more smooth to my ears.
    I liked A for the Riff part and B for the Solo part.
    Both sounded absolutely great to me, though.
    Also, I have to say it's great to see and hear the players that you gave videography tips to.
    Thanks for all the great fucking content and working like a beast, you maniac.
    I'm happy to see it pay off for you and delighted you keep just giving back to the community!
    I got me some LP-6's because of you and and I'll be gosh darn danged if those don't bing bang boodle my gazoodle.

    Glen!!! First, thank you as always for all of your content! I've been following you for a couple years now, and I love everything you do, from suggesting Distrokid (which enabled me to release my first album thanks to YOU), to recommending Rhino from Aurora DSP... and I also would like to get a Viscous one day, they look so sick and sound very good (at least through your rig lol). Also, your advice that you've given regarding recording, gear, techniques, etc. have been a fantastic help in my own home studio recordings, particularly learning the Fredman mic technique! I definitely owe you.
    Second, I wanted to weigh in on the blind test for this episode... I like Rig A better, it seems brighter and has a fuller body... I'm not even going to try to say which was which, I'm just going to leave it as Rig A winning. Rig B seemed a bit more dull and just lacked punch and body. It wasn't horrible or anything, it just lost to Rig A.
    Lastly, I've been watching you progress in your playing, you are just kickin' ass by leaps and bounds, so, that leaves me with this question... are you gearing up to possibly drop some Glen-shit on us at some point in the future? I know I would love to see what you come up with considering your studio experience, love for metal, and your knowledge on song creation. That is definitely something I would look forward to!
    You keep making 'em, I'll keep watchin' em. Thanks again!

    I really love the clarity on Rig A, I might be mistaken because I am not too familiar with the blackback speaker, but I remember swapping once a 16ohm greenback with a 8ohm version of it, clarity still remained with the difference in the mids, so I want to say that Rig A is the affordable HB with the greenbacks, it reminds of how clear the greenbacks sounds...

    When I needed a new cab for my band rehearsals, I didn't opt for Mesa, Marshall, HB, or Zilla. Instead, I ordered a custom-made horizontal 2x12. It cost about $110 for the cab without speakers. It has almost the same specifications as the MB 2x12, and no, there’s no 'MDF inside.' Then, I began experimenting with different speakers. The best combination, to my ears, was the Eminence DV-77 paired with the Swamp Thang. I achieved my unique sound for a little less than $500 (Eminence is expensive, after all). Since it was custom-made, there was no fancy logo on the front. I used a cheap 3D pen to add my own name to it! Now, I have a one-of-a-kind cab - both visually and sonically!
    So, listen to Uncle Glenn and put some effort into chasing your own tone! It’s f***ing worth it!

    The B rig is the Happy Cab. I can hear the tonewood in the MDF.
    I'm a bass player, I don't even need the sound on to hear the difference!
    Keep up the good work and FYG!

    I liked both mixes. The only reason I thought the A clip is the HB cab/6505+ is the high end. New speakers are typically brighter in my experience . Other than that, I’d use either rig and enjoy the hell out of it.

    I bought a Boogie 50 Cal + combo around 1989. Got it for $600 at the time brand new which was a deal. But I also loved the 2X12 cab that was paired with the head. It sounded amazing. But I got the combo because I just didn't want to move as much stuff around when I gigged, and I don't regret it. That combo served me well for years.

    Both rigs sound great to me, hard to say which is which. I think Rig A had a brighter, more present sound while Rig B was slightly darker. I think in the mix they both sound great and I have no clue which is which, but I'll make a guess for fun. Rig A is the "cheap" one and Rig B is the "expensive" tone snob approved one. Love your videos Glen, thank you for breaking things down in an easy to understand way for us mere mortals, you rock!

    He Glenn! My dad is a customs broker so I might have some knowledge that might help. Canada and Europe have the CETA (Canada Europe trade agreement). Essentially certain items that qualify for CETA = no duties. Either someone screwed up and forgot to apply for it when shipping or certain changes to the cabinet make it no longer eligible for CETA but that's out of my area of expertise but might be worth checking with harley benton (think thoman is their distributer) to find out what happened and to see if they could fix it.

      Doesn't help that when metal bands actually try something new the idiot "fans" label it as bad and/or non-metal. Mind you, both are occasionally true, but metalheads are fucking embarrassing sometimes.
      Example: Evolve by Chelsea Grin and The black crown by Suicide Silence. While both are now regarded as fine if not good, they were thrashed when they came out. Dare add cleans/nu metal influences? Sucks. Except it was one of the few times deathcore actually sounded unique
      For an earlier example, Projector by Dark Tranquillity. Possibly the best album in their discography, and it was torn to pieces when it came out because, repeat after me, they added synths and clean vocals. For a genre that once prided itself on its innovativeness, metal has become so stagnant and conservative
