The Carretera Austral is a mostly unpaved road that connects the most rural part of Patagonia in the very south of Chile. Tourism in this area is not as pronounced as it is in other parts of the country, as regular bus routes, accommodations and detailed info is hard to find.
But in this seclusion lies the attraction and a special charm. During my last trip I met very few travelers from Europe and North America. The locals welcomed me warmly and most attractions were not crowded.
After traveling this route twice via hitchhiking I thought it is about time that I put together a handy Carretera Austral guide which highlights the main sights along this 1200km long road. The video shows you my favorite places to visit from north to south, starting in Puerto Montt and finishing in Villa O’Higgins.
To do the Ruta 7 properly I recommend about 2 weeks - following I list all the places I visited & Things to do along the Carretera Austral:
    - Fjords, Hornopiren, Pumalin Park, Chaiten
    - Queulat National Park, Queulat Glacier, Puyuhuapi
    - Rio Futaleufu, Futaleufu
    - Cerro Castillo, Villa Cerro Castillo
    - Marble Caves & Lago General Carrera, Puerto Rio Tranquilo
    - Exploradores Glacier, Puerto Rio Tranquilo
    - Rio Baker, Cochrane
    - Caleta Tortel
    - Villa O'Higgins
    - O’Higgins Glacier

Excellent compilation !!! Great work !!!! With my wife and youngest son (we live in Bahia Blanca, 600km south of Buenos Aires), we did some Carretera Austral by car, last february, from Caleta Tortel to Puerto Montt !!! I was great to see in your videos so many places that we missed due to our time frame availabilty !!! We truly appreciate your work for a future visit to the zone ... specially to visit Villa O´Higgings, Queulat Hanging Glacier, Villa Cerro Castillo, and Pumalin Park !!! In 2015 we did Punta Arenas & Torres del Paine !!! We also took notes of some places in Chalten that we also missed !!! The landscape in Patagonia near the Andes (both Chilean and Argentinian side) is awesome !!! In few days we start our third exploration of Chile, this time, from Valdivia to Bahia Inglesa near Copiapó. Again we have a distance budget of about 2000-3000kms and 17 days behind the Andes. We need to add some 2500kms and approximately 4 days to complete our way home.

Wow - you are truly exploring that part of South America! Sounds like a great trip ahead and you're right that Patagonia is simply a breathtaking place. I always return to the area and my list gets longer with every trip, too ;)

Mariucho-I plan on driving the Carretera Austral from Puerto Montt to Puerto Rio Tranquilo before crossing into Argentina to El Chalten in December. My plan is to rent a 2wd car instead of a 4wd. I have plenty experience driving on rough mountain roads. I know a 4wd would be ideal, but do you think a 2wd sedan will be okay?

Thank you for this! I haven't found any standout videos that discuss places south of Chile to visit (which is why I didn't travel south on my last visit to Chile), but now. . . . South it is!!! Very detailed, short and sweet video. :)

BackPacker Steve thanks bro, then how many days do you recommend to drive? Assuming I'm not visit the adventure you list in the video :((

    • @BackPackerSteve
      @BackPackerSteve  Před 5 lety

Why would you drive there then if you don't visit anything? It's mostly gravel road and takes you at least 1-1,5 weeks depending on season, ferry crossing times and weather. If you have 5 days and need to be in Santiago you should got to the area of Valdivia & Pucon instead.
