- A trip along Chile’s National Route 7, the Carretera Austral, takes us into the stunning wilderness of Patagonia - a place that many German emigrants chose as their new home almost a century ago.
The Carretera Austral is straddled by mountain ranges, primeval forests, fjords, volcanoes and a huge ice field. It has taken decades to carve its way through the almost impassable terrain - even now a lot of traffic is forced to take a detour across the border into Argentina. The military dictator Augusto Pinochet made the construction of the road a national priority in the 1970s, sending thousands of soldiers to the region to work under the most adverse conditions. One of the last surviving members of Pinochet's junta, former military police chief Rodolfo Stange, talks about the road’s strategic importance for the regime.
German marine biologist Vreni Häussermann tells us about a catastrophe in one of the Patagonian fjords - an event that underlines how economic expansion along the route has adversely affected the natural environment in southern Chile. On our journey we meet descendants of German emigrants who found a new home in Patagonia’s remote vastness after the First World War. An insight into the past and present of this unique region.

Having lived in Chile for a decade and having travelled around Patagonia countless times in that period, I have to say that it is the most beautiful, untouched, and wild places I have been to. There is absolutely nothing like it. My commendations to DW for creating this authentic, near-identical representation of the Patagonian experience. It brought a tear to my eye.

Chilean Patagonia is one of the most beautiful places in the world, it reminds me of Norway. Many fjords, mountains, lakes, rivers, forests, glaciers. Marvelous. The Argentine part is so dry and arid that it looks like a desert, a steppe, I didn't like it at all. I know both countries
Chile is a very thin country but its geography is far more interesting than Argentina. Vast swaths of Argentina are flat and uninspiring.
You give me Chills, Chile. Truly one of the most Beautiful Country in the world. I wish I could go there one day.

This reminded me a lot of my own country of Norway, not just because of the fjords, but in general, as the pilot in the end of the documentary describes as a "raw beauty". Everything, from the mountains, to the green waters created by glacier melting, was just like all my travels around the west coast here as a child, only I have to say it have even more natural beauty with the trees and the slightly tropical look of the vegetation, similar to how in the depths of some fjords here there's huge groves of fruit trees that can grow because of the rich and fertile waters of the Gulf Stream that flow here. It's really a place I would feel at home at, if I ever visited. I can't say I agree that building a road is such a life-important thing. I'd have peace inside if I went to my grave knowing that there's still places like Patagonia in the world, where few people, because of the lack of roads, come. Thanks for sharing all the beauty. Specially the volcanic eruption with the lightning storm inside was powerful.

Just to clear: nothing about Patagonia is tropical. Since it does have glaciers, it’s colder than most European countries honestly.
@Elvenkind: I agree that it is a lot like Norway where I was born and raised. I believe it is colder than much of Norway, though I have never been to Patagonia myself. Norway has the Gulf Stream to warm it up; as far as I know there is nothing similar for Patagonia. Breathtaking nature, hardy residents so far south in Chile.
Man, I lived in Norway for one year. Visiting the North, starting from Bodo is magic. Emptiness and overwhelming beauty. Lofoten is a gem. It is rather difficult to explain it to people who didn't experience it. My dream is to visit it again and drive there. Take the ferry, encounter whales... It is all magical... Like a fairy tale...
@@nicoz4122 I'm half "northerner" myself, with my mother from Lofoten, and agree that it can all become overwhelming, words does not give the beauty justice, not even by calling it a fairy tale. I hope too you get to visit again. It's a shame it's all so expensive.

The look in Ranger Sergio's eyes and the smile on his face as he walks through Pumalín Park discussing the trees/wildlife (12:07-13:46) put a smile on my face. You can tell he really loves he loves what he does and is committed to the forest!
Thanks for this! I met a woman from Colorado who had gone with a friend and two horses to the south of Chilean Patagonia. They spent two years slowly making their way north. They'd trade horses as they went. She said that she'd meet families who had not had contact with others for a year or two. This gives me even more appreciation for what she had accomplished... Now I wish I'd asked her about crossing the fjords.

I am surprised that DW would interview Rodolfo Stange in such flatering terms. Of course he denies any involvment but the reality is that the junta, of which he was a key member, supervised over 2,000 murders, 27,000 persons tortured and over 200,000 exiled. Not a record to forget.
I agree about the German mr.strange. and a person would not achieve this kind of place in the killer Pinochet junta without doing the necessary things to achieve it.....like torture and murder....atta boy!
As a chilean, watching that part was sort of uncomfortable. Chile is politically divided (like many countries), but in our case is because of a dictatorship that ended not that long ago.

Beautiful video. I hired a pick up truck and drove from Santiago all the way down the Carretera Austral a few years ago. It is a long way but incredibly beautiful scenery. Crossed over to Argentina and drove up north. The contrast between the dry Argentinian Patagonia and wet Chilean side is interesting. Both are stunning. It is a wonderful part of the world.
Incredible!! It almost brought me to tears. My family is from Caleta El Manzano in Carretera Austral Km 70 Aprox. My grandfather worked in the first party opening the Carretera Austral, and as a local they were they very first opening the forest with Axes and showing them the way. Before the Carretera,they worked on the Alerce trees, chopping them and making the famous Alerce shingles. Then would embark them on sail ships and would bring them to Puerto Montt, it was a very dangerous journey by stormy Seas. Beside that occupation they were expert sailors and fishermen, fishing fish like the Chilean seabass, hake, conger eel , Chilean abalone, among other seafood that can only be found among those fiords. Pioneers there lived a basically completely auto sustainable life , producing everything they needed...beautiful memories.

To be fair to the farmer, if his farm was isolated without a road to the outside world, it would have been difficult & expensive to get decent fencing materials like steel fence posts. Hopefully he will find ways on the Internet to improve his business.
I knew about a country called Chile in South America but never knew about its beauty until now. I knew about a brand called Patagonia but never knew its actually a geographical region. Thank you DW, it is now on my bucket list!
Did you actually understand the point of the post? It's human exploitation that is causing the horror which is the premise of this story. But you are both promoting some brand product; whilst showing a clear ignorance of geography, and then promoting the idea of tourism in the area.
DW did not tell you to go there. It's making people aware of the problems we are causing to that region and the planet as a whole.

I did this route via Motorcycle with my brothr in 2019- It was amazing! This was a great way to see some of the same places.
It was the most magical trip of my life. It was 2008 but everything looks the same.
May the road never come ! May instead these wonderful and pristine areas be preserved forever !

Yeah, southern Chile looks the same as New Zealand and the people there are kind and warm too. The traditions are a balanced blend of spanish & aborigenous culture with a touch of austro-german and croatian cuisine.
By the way, appart from sharing landscapes and penguins, NZ and Chile also have in common a seaweed from the South Pacific, here it is called cochayuyo but its scientific name is Durvillaea Antarctica. In Chile it's used in cuisine and recently is being used in to elaborate cosmetics.

I just visited this area with my parents in January. Quite challenging ! We drove over 13000 km round trip from Brasil and spent almost 2 weeks in the region. I wish I’d seen this documentary before going there but this was very nice in retrospect. Great work as always!

I was in Chaiten shortly before the volcano erupted. My family and I crossed the Andes mountains by car from Trevelin (Argentina) to Chaiten and let me tell you that portion of land between those two little towns was the most beautiful place I've ever been to. The lakes, the rivers, the waterfalls, the majestic mountains and the vegetation that turns into a mixture of forest and tropical jungle resting right beside the pacific... simply breathtaking. Knowing that it was partly destroyed by the eruption makes my heart ache.

My cousin's drove the route from the tip of Alaska to the tip of South America by way of the coast in a Land Rover Jeep! And when the coast would not allow it to be driven they drove into the ocean as they were driving an amphibious landrover Jeep! They worked for National Geographic and the book subsequently written is called "20000 Miles", As best as I can remember it was in the 1950s when the book was published!?

Very remote, different yet familiar ( Alaska, Norway, Scotland, Iceland) and because of the language, Spanish and in some parts German, even more familiar yet strange and foreign. Wonderful stuff!

Best DW documentary so far. Would love to see more of these about other sparsely inhabited, wilderness regions. Kamchatka, Namibia, Greenland, and a few more spots, come to mind.
