I spent almost 25 years working in the oil field and I have had locations that were made out of that mud, so I know exactly what you’re dealing with and how heavy your boots will be and how easy it will be to end up with more than just your boots covered in mud. Between the suction and the slipping if you’re not careful, you’ll end up, covered in mud to your shoulders. I certainly don’t miss those days.
Eastern Montana gumbo will stay on your tires making them taller and harder to get out of the stuff.
Thats deep
Sticky yet slippy. 😆
My guess is it is almost entirely clay. There is no silt and no sand in it.
Near my town here in Croatia is a forest in a swampy area. That mud is pure clay in some places and is very difficult to wash off, especially if it starts to dry on the Jeep.
"If you can get unstuck using traction boards than you weren't really stuck". Shots fired. Love it.
I mean if you dont have a winch or some buddies. Then you could be. This sentiment is mostly for western sandy mud. Out east we use these board paired with rocks to make clearance for axels and stuff. Not exactly a mud saving device for us just to get through without breaking crap.
I don't know how the fractions boards worked putting them in the rear pulling forward
So glad to hear him say that. I giggle every time I see a pavement princess Wrangler festooned with red tow hooks, a snorkel (and carpeting) and no winch with plastic traction mats mounted prominently on the outside. They are meant for sand and best in dry sand. Try using them when they are wet and it's like they are dipped in WD40. Totally useless.
Pozers will be pozers. Install a winch.
I’m the senior wrecker operator in my unit for the US ARMY and I love watching these recovery videos!
Here's yet another fact you'll probably find very boring: The mud is likely bentonite. Like Matt said, it washed down from the surrounding hills. Highly absorbent, it's great for sealing the bottoms and inner faces of dams as it doesn't allow moisture to flow through it. Also, when we drill holes in the Earth below the water table, a slurry of bentonite is used to seal the inside of the boring to prevent collapse allowing us to obtain soil samples below the water line. Vernal pools are smaller versions of what you're in here. I've had a 16,000 lb. drill rig stuck a couple times. It is nasty, nasty stuff. A full day of bull dozing, winch lines, and struggling got it out. Where were you when I needed you? lol (It was in the early '80s)
Bentonite has great healing properties. It's absorptive property assists the elimination of difficult-to-release toxins. Mud baths, facials, poultices, and even taken internally (in very small amounts, with deactivated charcoal and a laxative) to detox the alimentary canal/intestine.
I used to be in the oil field in the 90's, Bentonite, Trade name WYOBEN (wyoming bentonite) was the base gel for all water based mud (drilling fluid). We would make gel water, and add some sort of caustic, sometime sodium hydroxide, sometimes potassium hydroxide to expand the gel. Then add weight material. sodium , Barium sulfate, hematite or whatever was called for. Point is, yeah thats thick, sticky stuff.
As I love nonsense, trivia, geology, hydrology, and nonsensology, this thread has me totally geeking out. 😵💫
@@dmelson7502I pee'd myself....
I used to deliver and pick up her from bentonite plants in Wyoming. any time it would rain it was like a Slapstick comedy bit out there in our trucks lol
"Here's an interesting fact you'll find really boring."
As a dad, I really felt that one.
I try to tell people geological facts all the time. No one likes them as much as I do apparently.
I like to educate people against their will too
😅"New boot goofin". Tom is hilarious. I appreciate the whole MORR crew.
"New boot skoot boogie"
3:20 an interesting fact we'll find boring?!? no way! I love hearing these interesting facts. I'm from the maritimes in Atlantic Canada, and I've never been able to travel anywhere else before, so I absolutely love hearing neat facts like this. Thank you Matt! And thank you to the whole crew for making another great video! I always look forward to a new one!
I find these snippets of fact interesting, and I live over 6,000 miles from Hurricane 🤣❤️🇷🇴
@@clivehorridge yeah im 4793km away from Hurricane myself lol according to google maps its 2960 miles, a 44hr drive! Ive never driven more than 4hrs to get anywhere in my life and never been on a plane so that would be quite an adventure haha
Hey Matt! You'll definitely want to apply some leather conditioner to your boots after you wash them, and wash them with Saddle Soap! The best method I've found once boots once my boots get muddy (granted, not with Utah clay, but with Cascades clay), is to use Saddle Soap and a brush small enough to swirl inside the tin -- just like lathering up for a shave! After you apply the lather (and really scrub with this stuff), wipe it off with a clean dry towel (and repeat if necessary). Let the boots dry for 10 to 20 minutes, then apply some leather conditioner, boot cream, or whatever will rehydrate the leather, so that it doesn't crack. Love watching you guys!
Reminds me of the time we got a Bradley Fighting Vehicle stuck
One track broke and 5 hours later with the help of another Bradley and a recovery track we were out.
I had mud up to my knees
Great job Matt and Tom and everyone
Only up to your knees? Must be an officer.
A good husband always provides entertainment for his wife, and the way Jamie was laughing, Matt was doing his job 😅
A good relationship. The husband would of “ in a fun way “ carried her over the threshold into the mud puddle, and gave her a big kiss! All covered in mud of Cours
A good husband? Is that the "happy wife, happy life" bs I keep hearing about? Whats the wife bringing to the table? Matt is providing a good income for his wife and family. Why does he have to entertain his wife too to be "good"? What a load of bs.
SUGGESTION: if you want to prolong the winch line life, pressure wash the most wearing parts(first few meters, also those little loop thingies) after it gets pretty dirty or even muddy. The tests were made on climbing ropes, making two equally used ropes dirty, and then washing one of them- both lines would enter repeatable cycles of simulated use. The rope, which was cleaned before the test, surprisingly lasted more than double the number of cycles of the dirty rope. The idea behind it, lots of accumulated dirt starts to behave like sandpaper not only on the surface when rubbing against something but also inside between the stretching and bending strands.
Same thing all the lines on a sailboat. Very similar to static climbing ropes, but constantly getting salt water spray/mist if you are coastal. The salt grains are perfect little buzzsaws that cut the internal fibers. Washing them out saves lots of pricey "rope".
I'm pretty sure he knows because it's pretty common knowledge when you one is around these kinds of forces and working conditions of synthetic rope. Especially because he uses them for a business but not hating on your comment, always good to teach other readers.
lol , one episode a while ago they tried a whole bunch of ' expert ' tips for washing ropes & straps .. pretty sure these guys know what their doing on that dept
True story. We used to try to clean and flex our dynamic ropes in the fire dept when they got dirty. You can never get 100% but you are guaranteed to get a lot of dirt in between the strands and the Kern if you are doing cliff rescues and recoveries.
@@lyfandeth That's kind of obvious on mud, but never actually thought salt would have the same effect. I think it's because the salt gets crystallized only when the water evaporates from the ropes, so you don't really see the salt depositing in there. Kind of "out of sight, out of mind" situation.
On that note, is there anything to let you know when the ropes should be washed, or is it just something you intuitively learn along the way? That is supposing you don't wash them after every sail.
I love that first rescue. I know Matt hates mud as he says it just about every mud rescue Team MORR has. Here in SoCal we yearn for soft sticky mud. We love to play in mud. We’ve played in red clay and it is very sticky. We spray WD40 on the undercarriage prior to playing in the mud at times when we remember to keep suspension as clean as possible. We have seen axles, and bodies ripped from the chassis in heavy mud. When we have a say so, we opt for the winch instead but some insist on dead pulling a stuck truck. Parts fly and give everyone a show. Anyhow, great recoveries and thanks for sharing as always.
Matt is probably correct that the southwest in general has something about the mud. Think about all the ancient dwellings that are still standing after hundreds or even a thousand years: Mesa Verde, Chaco Canyon, Hovenweep, etc. They were built with stone and mud and have lasted all these years. Pretty amazing! And highly recommended places to visit for those of you who haven't been to the southwest before.
You can measure true love by how fast your loved one reacts to a situation, as if it is instinct or they have to think about it first. How fast Jamie starts laughing is hilarious! “Boot, wha ha ha” should really be on a shirt. That is true love!
The mud recovery was the best! Thank you for sharing 👌
Thanks for that bonus at the end! I wish we could see more such 'behind the scenes' things.
I saw him pull the zip ties from the top of the package. But there's a better way. If you put a hole in the middle of the package you can pull them out and then have them not spill out once your done. The more you know. 😊
Why haven't I figured this out by myself? Thanks! 🤣
I'll give you a thumbs up for that tip 😊
If you're out in the boonies and need to re-use a zip tie, you can unlock one with a knifepoint or small screwdriver wedged under the latching mechanism
AvE taught me that
"wait until im out of town" 😂😂 matt always has a good answer
Hey Katelynn! Good to see you on my favorite CZcams channel. You're in for some serious shenanigans with this crew!
Great MUD Recovery....yucky; good to have Jordan on drone duty, Kolby & Jake, Tom & Jamie, and your special lady who came to make sure you did every right, Matt!! Great JOB!!
Matt is pretty much right about traction boards but I still use them. When I get to a point where I can't move I use them before I dig deep holes. I use them before I'm stuck so I don't get suck.
I love how Jamie was laughing awesomely…that true love
Again Matt keeps his cool and gets them out. He’s always the hardest worker of the crew.
Nice recovery have a good day and count your blessings amen.
Yeah the Biggest Wrecker is back! The Banana to the rescue of the VW. Good to see Jaymie helping and the rest of the team.
"Remember Spongebob. It's not the boots, it's the bootee." Jamie laughing in the distance was priceless. Thanks for the video.
Was looking for this comment lmao!! She didn't miss a beat🤣 started laughing as soon as it happened
Nice recoveries guys!! I don't envy Matt having to clean those boots. The outside is bad enough but the inside.... good luck with that one!! LOL!!
I've been logging in western Oregon mud since I was sixteen. There's one of the reasons why we wear lace up boots while logging and fighting forest fires. That stuff will grab and not let go.
Speaking of Utah clay, that stuff is great for throwing pots. My wife is Western Shoshone and when visiting family down in that country she fills my rig with about a ton of clay, fires it in small thin blocks and grids it up fine and ads water and presto! She says its some of the best clay in the world. I just showed her this video and I guess we're heading to your part of the world next spring. I want to stop in and meet Ed. Get some desert prospecting tips.
I've spent some time in the mud in Appalachia, and I agree about the laces comment. I can't imagine wearing slip on boots or just shoes in the mud.
Seagrove, North Carolina is an area known for its clay and pottery. If you ever make it out east your wife would enjoy it.
Thanx man, I've some friends our in the north Carolina. I wonder how much it would cost to ship a ton and a half all the way to oregon?
I'm sorry Matt. But Jayme laughing was making me laugh. I've been there plenty of times. For me it's a good time and gets better as I get dirty.
I think a good running joke is giving the weather each video, despite us all knowing that Matt will have the same outfit on, whether it’s in the summer dunes, or if he’s on a snowy mountain.
the mud pit was the first time that i've seen matt and crew trying their darndest to stay clean.
Enjoyed your slip and slide, the long distance boot removal was great and Jamie’s laugh was the best!, Maybe keeping a few pairs of muck boots in your equipment arsenal would be Wise?? Lol
Morning Matt and the Morr crew! As a part time four wheeler and former river running four wheeler I never understand why anyone would head for mud. Mud is endless fun (hic) and no end of clean up and wash downs seems to ever get rid of it. Years later you take a part off a vehicle and what else there is dried mud .... from that one time way back!
Mud is a challenge and some people like the challenge, also some grown men like to act like toddlers and some toddlers like to stomp through puddles🤷♂️😂
You say you never understand why anyone heads for mud and then you give the reason. Mud is endless fun. In that moment that's all that matters. There may be some regrets later but those don't matter or stop you from doing it again because it was fun.
I will agree but with purpose built or minimum vehicles with tires and frame better suited then a typical primarily a car with street tires. That adds a bit to much "fun". @@grimsoul0
Children do what feels good 'right now' and unfortunately for the health of the USA, there are far too many children. Good for Matt though I guess.
@@grimsoul0undeveloped and underdeveloped brains only care about 'right now'.
There was a couple of times in the mud trap where I thought Matt was going down. That would have went viral 😂. (Sorry Matt.) Also good drone shots by Jonah.
Rewatching. Matt's mud jig moves are top notch
Matt's a trooper for doing another job with a mud filled boot. Hope he doesn't get trench foot 😬
I'm addicted to your videos. Wish you all the best!
Should have played " Boot Scootin' Boogie" by Brooks and Dunn when Matt lost his boot in the mud and at the end when he was washing his Boot in the sink!
I was thinking the same thing, but then there would probably be some Copyright BS they's have to deal with.
Thank all them camera guys !!! Thanks for catching Matt falling in the mud !!!! Matt you should ware your safety glasses more often ??
It's great that JAMIE really helps and seems to enjoy it.
Once again, nice recoveries !
Stay tuned for the next episode when we see Matt trying to get the clay out of his sink drain pipes. 😏
Using the drone to scout for the customer is a big brain move
This call may have been an exception, but the fact that drone flights are illegal over most of Utah is only the first reason that using drones to find the customer is generally impractical.
Awesome job on getting them out of there. Keep up the great work.
I’ve been in scenarios where there is no moving (deep snow, the dry granular stuff that doesn’t stick to anything) but you can get on top of traction boards and creep ahead 2ft at a time. It took forever and with a second vehicle or a winch you could move way quicker, but you could use traction boards repeatedly to get out.
Matt’s traction board idea is probably true in sand and mud and rocks though.
"Volkswagen repair kit" and then show a bag of zip ties. Brilliant 🤣🤣
Where's the rubber band for the fan belt?
Just found your channel a few days ago and have been binge watching. I particularly like the nearly complete lack of profanity - just nice people doing good things. Very cool. And you know how lots of great inventions were discovered by accident? You may have had just such a discovery in the mud - Poligrip for Boots. ;-) 🙂
Jake said Volkswagen repair kit. Lol. I love the one liners Jake. Keep them coming.
As a relatively new Hurricane resident, these vids are valuable educating me to what is around.
LOOOOOOL, Jamie laughing her butt off in the background when Matt loses his boot.
That's why you roll up your pants and go barefoot in that kind of mud
You guys are amazing. So nice. So helpful. And man, was that guy in the mud stuck!
Great to see your attitude remains so positive inspite of miserable mud
I tried not laughing after all of the explanations about people loosing shoes and boots in the mud 😂🤣
Thanks, Matt and crew
I worked in the oilfield for most of my life... there is NOTHING worse than having squishy muddy socks stuffed inside boots all day! Make you wanna pack up and go home! 😂😂
If I'm not mistaken, Matt's boots are Ariat brand......At $250, filling one of them with mud, especially a brand-new pair, is enough to put anyone in a grim mood.
These needto bee immediately washed, dried, and greased....Or the leather will crack.
Matt, you have the temperment of a saint! Kudos!
Jaimie is in her sensible shoes again! Love it!!
Love her giggle too...laughing right along with her! Sorry Matt!! Lol
No Matt, not in the sink! You're going to have to give Ollie the Drain Addict a call.
I was just thinking wow Tom come prepared Matt don't have to get in the mud and then Here Comes Matt trudging through slinging his boot off that was great you guys. I'm glad you didn't edit that out always great videos👌👍
I just love y'all. I look forward to every video regardless of what it is. Thanks for great entertainment. Looking forward to many more from you and all the other family channels! Paul, Robby, Trail Mater , Owen, Bleepin Jeep, etc etc etc...oh yeah Jet Ski Jimmy and of coarse RUDDY!! Special thanks to Diesel Bros for getting me into all these channels!
Love it. Got Dad, Mom, Uncle, and kids vibes from that intro!
More and more, Jakes energy gives me energy! A great addition to the team! I miss some of the old faces but watching Rhett and Jake and Colby and Jonah take this channel into the future is awesome!
I’d love to see you guys show your theory on traction boards like test it in mud sand ect!
I like the wrecker picture clipped on top of the thumb nail to get the peoples attention. Worked for me
The “Mud” recovery was great, best video for a while considering the tensions the mud creates and the way everyone handles it 👍
I realize conditions are different in other locations, but what works for me is white kitchen plastic garbage bags over my boots. The mud doesn't seem to stick to the smooth plastic. Plus, clean up is much easier. Stay safe.
I love how you got -11% sympathy from Jamie when you lost your boot 😂
Lol Matt: "Well, was it worth it?" Customer: "Kinda"
I'd say: definitely, you got to meet the legendary MORR crew!
Matt I really like your video's with Jayme out on the Job. (really all of them) Next time you are cleaning your boots, try not to clean them in a sink. You can plug up the pipes or dry well or sewage tank. Try to use a outside garden hose. Just saying! I can't leave Tom Tom out of this, you're a good man. Yes If lived out there I would love to have you all as real friends for life. Thank you all for the adventures!
I love it when Jonah flies the drone! He adds to the awesome content!
HEY! Gooooood morning and thumbs UP to Matt and crew! 👊👊👍👍
We live about 10 miles due east of Snowflake AZ and also 10 miles off pavement. During monsoons every summer, we get similar sticky mud pits developing. A boot picks up about 5 pounds of clay with every step and it’s miserable.
I totally agree ! Utah has the Gooiest / Stickiest / Slimy areas ! Great video's . Feel bad for the ones that get stuck . And then there is your Boot ! Thanks for sharing !
I've lived in the southwest for 26 years and any time it gets muddy I stick to pavement. Just the cleanup is a pain, let alone the stuck risk.
One hour of fun is 4 hours of cleaning😂. We got lots of mud here and that's the ratio we have to accept

Cool recovery!
I used to work in a euro based car shop here in NZ. Those plastic under panels are just crap, half of the are torn up cable tied together. Most of the VW Audi cars have cast aluminium oil pans too, so if you lower your golf it looks great but avoid carpark judder bars (HUMPS). We used to keep a golf oil pan in stock and they used to sell. LOL Good job guys. Another happy customer.
Jamie the word is Coehisive 😊
Great job folks.
There's no benefits to playing in that mud, except watching Matt trying to avoid a face plant.😮😂
As the video showed, straight clay mud is a really good way to have a really bad time really fast. I’ve seen these conditions outside Utah, but always in a man made excavation site like the borrow pit they were in for this recovery. If a large exposed clay seam is something that can occur in nature I haven’t seen/heard of it. Im actually kind of surprised the excavationg contractors didn’t have to push the overburden back over the top of the exposed clay when finished digging out what they needed for the reservoir .
Wyoming is covered in an exposed clay seam called bettonite! When it rains you stay on the pavement.
Here in Colorado we get seams of it, completely exposed and on the surface. Just part of living in the southwest, seen it in Utah as well.
Cool videos, nice recoveries 😊
Matt, you may not believe this, but they had MUD like this in I Corps section of Vietnam back when I was there in 1968-1970. Red dust in the summer & slick red mud in monsoon season. Greetings from the Old Jarhead in WNC
You made a spartan effort in the mucky mud & got the vehicle out - I don't envy you. And I'm deeply sorry re the Das Boot, that filled with mud, Matt can't be happy about that; lets hope it gets washed out, cleaned up & the leather survives. For years I've have near knee length black rubber boots that I use in low water (in streams) or if I have to got out into a muddy yard or on the edge of stream (pulling out logs) like we were this spring with high water and flooding. The suction and slipping can be treacherous in a situation like yours, happy you all came out alive. Great effort!
OK, I have to complement the cameraman for being on point(s) while filming the bumper sections.
I see what you did there. It was a very pointed part of the video.
Every single 20 something starbucks barista drives a passat
Loving the aerial/drone shots. 👍🏻
😂Well, take care of that boot son😂. Another fun video, thanks for sharing, and have a great day ya'll.
You may be right that if traction boards got you out, you were not really stuck in the first place. But here in Australia they're very popular because they are easy to use and usually get you unstuck fairly quickly with less risk of making matters worse. Pretty much every vehicle overlanding in the outback will carry them for that reason.
Great in sand to get back on top after you dig through. Sometimes you have to walk back to get them because you can't risk loosing momentum stopping to pick them up.
@@tumbleweedking5668 Tie the traction boards to your truck and when you get unstuck you tow them to dry ground.
@@NoNORADon911that's actually not a bad idea. I'll have to remember that.
@@NoNORADon911 I was told to attach ropes to traction boards and pull-pal anchors so that you can get them back out of the sand after a recovery.
@@azmax623 Yep just make sure the rope is strong enough and that you tie the rope to the back of the traction boards. If they are buried in this mud clay though it might break the rope or tear out of the hole on the boards.
WHEN MATT TURNS AROUND AND LOOKS AT HIS BOOT STUCK IN THE MUD AFTER TAKING A STEP INTO THE MUD IS HILARIOUS

I worked in a chalk quarry - driving an old CAT D6 - and that was dusty and bright like a white desert until it _rained_ ! Then it was the stickiest slimy mud. EVERYTHING was damp in the shade and winters were like trench warfare. It destroyed everything, boots lasted about 6 months if you were lucky!
Big wrecker earning its keep!! Nice job
There are different types of clay for sure, but largely the clay deposits are composed of a mixture sand, silt, and clay. The more clay you have and the stickier it becomes. Silt deposits can look a lot like clay and will contain some clay, but will not be as sticky as a clay deposit. Gray clays can contain more organic matter, but you don't see that in red clays. The red color indicates oxidation and that process burns off the organic matter. There is a big difference in what contains 35% clay and what contains 80% clay! I'd say that clay deposit just has more clay in it! Somewhere there is an engineering report for the dam that details the clay content.
One of the other commenters says it was probably bentonite.
Yes ... I saw that and there is no shortage of bentonite in Utah, but clay deposits of this type are rarely just one clay. Most likely there is some bentonite, illite, kaolinite, and others. Bentonite is typically a light colored clay and the closer you get to the volcanic deposits the more bentonite you are going to find, but once you get out into the wide flats the more the mixed clay mineralogy you find.@@TheRealTburt
SUGGESTION: Do like Tom and find some high rubber boots, they are very useful in this kind of muddy situations. He went out pretty much clean if I have something to say, while Matt ....😅🤣 I think this is the very first episode seeing a Morr crew using high rubber boots haha they always bring normal shoes, not to mention Jamie in sandals. 😁

2:44 man he has got to be proud of where he was stuck, that was very very impressive ! It clay slip !
A 20 gallon pressurized fresh water tank with a spray nozzle charged by the air system in the wrecker would be very helpful on recoveries like this. Plus you would have drinking water on board for the crew and the dogs for those unexpected extended recoveries in the summer months.
I know the right equipment makes this look easy but that came out far easier than I expected
Tom was a great addition to the show. I wish I lived closer as I have a couple LS motor and tranny combinations I'd donate. Jaymie has really progressed in helping out. Can you buy her some boots. lol
