  • Class 24 Locomotives 24023 & 24035 pass through Milton on the Leek to Stoke line with a sand train from Oakamoor to St Helens in 1976. The video was shot in Super 8 without sound. I have added a random recording of 24057 on a sand train from Oakamoor as background. The Stoke -- Leek -- Caldon Low line is now owned by Moorland & City Railways and is in the process of being brought back to life. Can't understand why they call it the Cauldon Lowe line!

Great bit of footage of a bygone era. Love the trackbed which is the same colour as the trains load from all the spillage over the years. I walked this line from Stoke to Cauldon in the mid 90's. It was very overgrown by this time and was around a 13 mile walk to Cauldon Low and -6oC. The cold wouldn't usually bother me, but unfortunately I was camping out that night and had to hammer the tent pegs into the ground with a rock as it was still frozen from the night before! That was a very long night, but the Leek branch was so scenic in it's day I'm glad that parts of it are slowly returning to use thanks to the Churnet Valley Railway.

Very good. In their own way, fantastic locomotives for their duties of the day, particularly up here on the Far North Line.
