Looks great! This is exactly what our Dress Blues are like. Now imagine taking those off after a Marine Corps Birthday Ball not so sober.
WANT! Top class good sir! Shout-out to Lone Star Piper!
Thanks for the review Matt. I just purchased that doublet today based on your review.
Cheers
Matt Tierney
Hello Matt I’m Reed I’m new to the bagpipes I have a bagpipe instructor. My instructor says that I’m pretty good at my fingering he also got me a song tune called I can’t help falling in love with you by Elvis Presley I been practicing this song for a week and I’m getting better at it
Looks great.
Thanks!
Nice-looking tunic, Matt. Living near London UK, I was lucky to be able to have my doublets made by the military tailors Kashket, that make the uniforms for the Scots Guards and other regiments.
Brings memories of the band I learned in, St. Andrew's Society of the River Plate. 47 years ago.
My old doublet from the 1950s19070ish had a zip under the buttons
Sharp look!
Lookin good Matt, here in Scotland a lot of the guys who wear No.1 Uniform cut along the straight side stitching and insert a piece of stiffer plastic on the shoulder pieces to keep their shape as they do lose shape with use. Also their are Feather bonnets available over here, if you want one I'm sure the companies over here would send you one. 🏴

Sound advice.
Brilliant Matt. I've always loved number one ceremonial uniform dress I've got halfway number one uniform crossbelt waist belt with buckle like one on your video horsehair sporran tartan top hose brooch for plaid. But no doublet and plaid and feather bonnet. But I'm getting spats and shoulder shells soon from my friend in Glasgow.
Would doublet be first before 4 yard plaid
that's one of the coolest uniforms ever in my opinion, but must suck to wear in the heat down here in summer
Good looking piece of kit Matt. Our pipers only wear the right shoulder board, and I believe if you look at the 3rd Scots their pipers do the same. Also, neutral kiwi shoe polish will do your belt wonders and leave no visible residue on your bag cover.
Thanks for the info! I'll check out the neutral shoe polish.
could you do more reviews on uniform s pieces please
I have another video on the topic coming soon!
Great Videos, I do enjoy them! If I may point out, one thing you did not mention about the doublet, the ' Inverness flaps' on the front should have pockets to contain small items. My doublet is from a Gurkha Piper and the Inverness flaps contained two(2) brand new Corporal chevrons for the jacket! I guess he did not have time to sew them on? Once again, I enjoy your videos, Thank you!
Wow! I had no idea! They are definitely there! Nothing inside them, however... ;)
My band, the pipers don't wear the shoulder piece on the bagpipe side. Our doublet has a zipper, makes it easier. Under the front, bottom flaps, we have pockets, perfect fit for a flask!
I’ll need to see if my hidden pockets could fit a flask. Hmmm... the shoulder wing doesn’t get in the way of my playing, and Alasdair Gillies wore both (“does a bird have one wing?”)...
Awesome dublet. Need to work on that salute... Just kidding thanks for another great video
Ha! That pinkie was a bit out there. Too many birls over the past 25 years methinks!
Proper name for “the hat” is a Glengarry or a Glenn. A great looking uniform. Mine has a zipper under the same style of buttons you have.
Ha! I write as much out on screen (including saying "I suspect someone will still say something in the comments") You win, sir! Link to video at that time code: czcams.com/video/pR4dRFDNarE/video.html
It looks sharp Matt. I think J.Higgins.net carries Feather Bonnets, not sure how many feathers though. Happy hunting.
They only have diced ones... pretty sure those are for drummers (but could be wrong... so many rules!)
It does remind me of my high school band uniform, especially at the collar.
What are the washing/cleaning, care & feeding instructions? Dry-clean only? Woolite? Washboard and rocks? ;-)
Good question! Let me see if I can find the answer...
Back in the 1700s or so when this type of military doublet became a thing, commissioned men had valets and non-commissioned men had wives and fellow unit members to help with getting dressed. The officers specifically had valets to help with their uniform because the higher the rank, the more complicated the kit. Valets for the higher ranking officers were (and still are today) younger commissioned officers, like captains. It's considered a great honor for a captain to be a page/valet (or personal assistant as they call them today) to a general. I'm not sure if they help them dress today, seeing that the uniforms are much less complicated and valets are not a common thing, but they do things like other PAs do - event planning, personal errands, etc. So, NO, you're not supposed to be able to put it on by yourself. :P At least, not easily!

Great info there, Aunt Bebe!
Is that the RCAF tartan I see? Oh I missed when I was an air cadet and wore it. It's hard to find it now. All I get to wear is the Black Watch tartan.
This is Anderson Modern from Strathmore Mills, and looking up the RCAF tartan, I see it's based on the Anderson tartan with slightly different colors.
@@MattWillisBagpiper Still looks pretty in my eyes. That also means I want it, but seeing how I can't afford to sustainably maintain my compulsive reed buying habit... That'll be a while
look like a Marine in the Royal Navy.....sharp!
What is a piper's plaid?
Great question! The extra tartan bit that wraps around the piper and creates a cape of sorts. I own the plaid, just need the cross belt to secure it in place.
All you need now is a feather bonnet!
Got one now! czcams.com/video/6rBMjNpGi0U/video.html
@@MattWillisBagpiper I always thought they were bearskins. It was very hard to find the feather bonnet because I was always putting in "Scottish Bearskin" ha!
Searching for a bearskin hat would make it difficult!
@@MattWillisBagpiper Yup. Also, I was wondering, what is your tartan? I am more into the darker green tartans but that's really interesting
This tartan is Anderson Modern
Sorry Matt, the link below does not work from CZcams.
It is just when I touched the jhiggins.net that I put earlier dealing with the feather bonnet. It routed me to an unknown address page.
does a piper wear both shoulder extensions? looks like it gets in the way.
The answer appear to be "it depends" so I suspect I'll wear both so I look balanced even while not holding the pipes.
@@MattWillisBagpiper i've played in military pipe bands with doublets and what we did while wearing a full plaid was take off the left shoulder one because it got in the way
In the New York State Troopers Pipe Band we wear the same doublet, we took the left shoulder shell off for the pipers because they could get in way when bringing your pipes up in formations
Wear both. That way if you take the plaid off you don’t look lopsided. It also gives the plaid a little more width at the shoulder.
Sorry, jhiggins.net I entered the link with a typo before.
Iv seen non-military pipers wearing these. Are civilian pipers allowed to do that?
All all bands (military and civilian) used to wear the full No.1 Dress attire, so yes, you are definitely allowed to wear it. I do not have the patch saying I'm part of the King's army (a crown between the Pipe Major forearm stripes and the pipe major shoulder patch), as I'm not in the King's army.
@@MattWillisBagpiper I thought as much, I do notice they’re not wearing patches. But to keep the respect you just gotta find out and be sure. There is very limited information out there to find out. I struggled!
Texas heat,... at least the kilt let's the men breath lol ... looking good bud
.i ove my scotsman wear but thought to wear a pipers hat you need be a major or another term for a true piper ... is it wrong to wear a pipers hat if you dont play pipes... amazingly? Me tam gets hot at the medevil fairs
I think you're fine wearing whatever hat you want!
Matt I know someone who may have a bonnet to sell.
Not sure I'm interested in a used one. I imagine how sweaty of a mess these things must get!
Matt Willis Bagpiper I’m not sure it is new or used I can check if your interested.
