- Can you really catch a Train from this Disused Railway?
The Macclesfield Bollington and Marple Railway was Recommended for closuse in the 1960s on the Beeching Report. Amazingly it outlasted many railway lines on the Beeching Report lasting up until 1970. One of the final Beeching Closures if not the last?
In Part 2 i begin at Higher Poynton, i head on towards the site of Middlewood Higher Station & High Lane Station. Finally we arrive at Rose Hill Marple Station where this section of railway is still open.

Love your walks. You put the BBC to shame with the amount they spend on programmes. You are very professional, and on such a low budget also.
That's very kind of you to say thank you ☺️
The Access to the main line and a lot of stations could make this route a valuable route for some sort of transport infrastructure
Nope. The track bed is built on at the southern end.
Travelled to Bollington and back when I went over the Woodhead route a few days before that line closed for good. Shame to see the bare remains of a once busy railway but at least it's still finding a purpose in life.
Thanks for bringing back the memories!
The Woodhead route is one I should really walk soon too. Thanks very much for watching
Brilliant pair of videos Ant!
Rose Hill was listed for closure with the rest of the stations.
However, it was reprieved due to the high level of commuter usage to Manchester & Stockport.
I visited the line many times in the 1980's and walked it before it was transformed into the Middlewood Way.
First walked the complete Middlewood Way in 1985, at that time you could walk all the way into Macclesfield, that was before they used the trackbed to build the new bypass. 🙂👍
Thanks very much Ian. Its nice that at least a little bt of the line survived
At Higher Poynton station there was a signal box right next to the Lyme road over-bridge, built actually on the south bound platform with a very restricted view of the track to the north. There is a photo of it in Basil Jeuda's book "Railways of the Macclesfield District" The signal box closed in 1966. I only just was on the platform on a walk to Lyme Park today 17/06/24!
Yes, I did enjoy that, Ant. I like the idea of a closed station displaying travel information, albeit for it's still open neighbour!
This line should get fully rebuilt to assist the mainline between stoke and manchester.
Beautiful walk. Loved all the bridges and the old photos. Very informative. So many memories for many people . Look forward to your next video.thank you.
Another nice explore and great relaxing video for the weekend. Beautiful stonework on those arched bridges. Cheers from the Colorado Rockies.
Thanks very much Peter. I'll be getting out quite a lot in July so plenty to come
Closure of the line means hell traffic! Bring it back! Thanks for another awesome splendid video...am walking this in July ❤
When I worked for Network rail property maintenance that was one of my stations, we had a little book with hazards that you had to fill out. I got pulled in as I’d written “chickens on the platform” they thought I was joking.
Thanks for the beautiful video. The drone footage really adds to the production.
Brilliant walk and lovely the line is still open best wishes looking forward to your next adventure xx
Loved following you on this walk, Ant, and I look forward to your walks around the Peak District. Beautiful countryside 😊 Thank you
Thanks Vicky... I had a little visit there yesterday ☺️
Very good, but its Disley, not Dilsley as you seemed to say.
It has a bar there serving many malt whiskeys.
So if you had a shop in Disley selling Malt Whiskey, what else would you call it, but....Malt Disley.
Excellent.
Wonder if it's a Mickey Mouse outfit?
Lol.
Another great and educational walk from you 😊.
A pleasant walk ending with a convenient connecting railway service from Rose Hill - saved by commuter traffic, it seems. Some evocative archive images and fine looking bridges. Thank you.
The dressed stonework on the bridges really shows craftsmanship, especially on the arch bridges. Another fine walk, it's like we're almost there with you...........
Part 2 well worth waiting for, great video again.
Thanks so much Gary
Very very interesting. You had a long walk to produce this video.
Another enjoyable video Ant! Lovely old photos too.
See you in the next one. Cheers Joe
Thanks for watching Joe 😁
Wonderful really enjoyed part 2. You put a lot of effort into making your videos.
Thanks very much 😊
Glad you enjoyed it
nice to see part 2 of this beautiful journey through this disused railway thanks for sharing im looking forward to yr next adventure xx
Thanks Jan. We'll be back in North Yoirkshire and South Wales again soon!
Have loved this. Those bridges were beautiful, even the iron one. Loved the echo in there. I enjoy walking with you the area is gorgeous and learn so much from you. Thank you so much. Thanks for taking me along. Please take care
Splendid part two Ant. Have you researched how long it takes nowadays to travel by train from Rose Hill to Middlewood Lower? When the line was active I would imagine it was about ten minutes. Today it’s probably two hours minimum providing connections allow.
Rose Hill Marple and Manchester to Sheffield via Marple had the last class 101 Diesel Multiple Units in the country and were withdrawn after 50 years work, which was pretty good as they were only built for 15-20 years service. That was the last time I was in Marple. I feel sure that the route to Macclesfield would have been a useful one to have retained as it did not seem to duplicate any other route. Middlewood Lower has some unusual access arrangements as you have to go via the Higher station to get access to it. Thank you for these most interesting video presentations which are very much appreciated by us.
You might remember this train station From an episode of max and paddys Road to knowhere starring peter kay and paddy mcguiness.
The episode featured the two getting the train to middlewood paddy hinting middle of wood and missed the last train and had to camp in the woods.
Lovely stone bridges - and I loved the little statue of the frog! When we were last in that area, we took snaps of Disley tunnel from the footbridge on the eastern side of it. What an interesting line you walked. Looking forward to the next video. Thanks so much, Ant.
Love your walks watching from New Zealand, some interesting old infrastructure, I find it amazing to see this still surviving. We were in the UK last year visiting family in Eastbourne. We were treated to a stage show in London and had to take the train to London, I love the train journey and so we went via St leonards Warrior Square then changed to take the train up to Charing Cross, 2 hours and I love the scenery and seeing the old stations on the way.
Hi Ant. Another great trip.. i love your format and presentation i don't know how you remember all that information.. i feel like I'm going for a walk with an old mate.. brilliant work keep it up and thank you . Dave from Coventry..
Great video has always. Lucky you to have a dry warm day! 😅
I did well that day. Covered a lot of distance too. Thank you for watching
Another enjoyable evening thanks Ant
My pleasure Stuart thank you
Thanks!
Thanks for watching ☺️
Well-to-do and influential people kept the station open at Rose Hill..... Trains for me, Not for thee!
Very well produced. I like how you morph the " then and now" photos. Greetings from Australia.
Thanks very much indeed Richard 😌
Excellent as always, I live in Lincolnshire, and there is a Railway walk from Woodhall Spa to Horncastle. Still has the original post and rail fencing.
Thanks Nick. I need to do some in Lincolnshire in 5 years of this channel I've only ever done one video there
Your close to where I live - I Live near Buxton - A bit strange to see you on a Train even thou I watch you walk along Abandoned Railways!!!😉🚂🚂🚂
I used the station at Middlewood to buy studio equipment at Highlane Village. The walk through the woodland to access the A6 is so unique. Is this the only one like that in England? There is a wooden sign nailed to a tree saying, "To the Station," like something from a wild west movie.
thank you for showing me
Thanks very much for watching
Another interesting video love your enthusiasm.. anything planned in north or West Yorkshire ??
Thanks very much Alan. The plan is to return to The Whitby to Loftus line in July
I remember reading some years ago that the branch lines which survived the excesses of Beeching were all in Tory marginal constituencies. I imagine Rose Hill is a bit semi-detatched, middle class, but have never been there, if so, it might fit the bill.
Spot on
Great video again :) isn't that the Middlewood Station from Max and Paddy Road to Nowhere?? If I'm not mistaken 😂😂
Oh I don't know I'll have to check 😂
Thanks for watching ☺️
Wish you had filmed going through the tunnel! 😀
That would have been interesting 😂
I've got some tunnels planned for July 😉
I did some of this line on my channel its beautiful
How many of today's concrete bridges will still be going strong in 150 years?
Yea u culd had walking it back to Stockport just following the main roads that takes into Stockport and walk over to the train station....lol 😂😆😂😆.
Excellent Video, however not pronouced "Dilsley" correct is Disley. Trains from Rose Hill run to Manchester either via Woodley or Bredbury. Bredbury is the closest station to Stockport with a direct bus service into the town outside of the station. Bus no is 330.
Thanks very much David. I had a feeling I'd pronounced it wrong somewhere
Sorry to be a pedant but I think Rose Hill trains run to Manchester via Woodley, Hyde and Guide Bridge and not Bredbury.,but you can also catch the 330 bus at Woodley into Stockport.
@@rodgermoss8975 You are correct Rodger,
Rose Hill had the Class 101s running to it until 2003. So much more comfy than those rubbish Pacer trains.
2003 isn't that long ago really is it yet to me it feels like those old units went way before then
@@TrekkingExploration Most of them were withdrawn in 1980s-90s. The last few 1st generation DMUs (very few left after 1995) had extended lives probably due to privatisation, as did the Pacers.
Ironic to be walking a disused over a current🤔 Some sturdy old bridges and no gobby cyclists!!!😂😂
Wither agatha christie?.....
It's Disley, not Dilsey. It's been pronounced incorrectly at least twice.
Well spotted
So let me get this straight…You can’t put a drone up to film an active railway line from a distance but you can film on the platform and inside a train at Rosehill station…Explain.
Drone's have many rules. There in the air and can malfunction.
@@TrekkingExploration I don’t think that answer explains anything…
@@johnhalley974 get yourself on the Civil Aviation Authority website. I'm not going to start flying over railway lines
@@TrekkingExploration I’ve been through the whole guidance…Apart from the 50m guidance I don’t see a problem
@@johnhalley974 ok it's up to you to fly one as you wish. I've chosen how to use mine and will continue to do so. Have a good day
Too many adverts! Greed?
Possibly. They Chuck longer ones in nowadays out of my control
