That's how my walks go too.
Ahhh I remember those the constant rest periods between the multiple scent stops with my basset... takes an hour to walk 200m. When will possums and other wild animals learn to travel in a straight line rather than from tree to tree.

I have a basset-pit mix. The most hilarious dog ever. I like watching Dean's vids--- helps me understand my boy. The basset side is so stubborn, it cracks me up. He just looks at me like, "yeah?" and keeps doing what he's doing, which is usually stopping in the middle of a walk and just sniffing the air for 10 minutes.
Dean should consider being a life-style consultant to the rich and famous. That guy knows how to live.
My basset, Pierre, whom we called Pooper because he had “that” problem (too lazy to ask to go out), got to where he would go to the edge of the property line (how he figured that out, I will never know!) and go flat. And anyone who has ever lived with a basset hound knows, once they go flat, they “ain’t” gonna move!
Yes, these animals do go "flat" from time to time.

I’m getting a basset tomorrow any advice
Spend every minute of every day and night with your hound if you can. Handle him as much as possible like his paws so he gets acclimated to nail trimming and such. Lots of praise and no punishment. Read every book on dog training you can find and TRAIN him. They can learn any trick. My hound did 14 tricks. Time flies. Mine has been gone for a decade now.
