Dangerous Ride Zanzibar 🇹🇿

- ■ TANZANIA, ZANZIBAR: All over Stone Town I've seen locals cruising around on classic looking bicycles. Most of these bikes seem to be at least 2-3 decades old. After a couple of days filled with jealousy I decided I also wanted one. But where could I get one? It's not like these classic bicycles are sold in stores anymore.
So I went for a walk with Polo School in search of someone willing to sell me theirs. Before we'd reached the area we expected there to be a lot of cyclists at, and before I'd even started filming, I spotted one of these classic bikes locked and parked outside a coffee shop.
The owner was an old man who said he'd bought it over 20 years ago for 8000 shilling. He also seemed quite fond of the bike. A few minutes later though, I was the new proud owner of this classic bicycle and the old man had more money in his hand than he'd ever expect to get for his old bike.
I was now ready to commence my journey across the island on the narrow dangerous not made for biking roads of Zanzibar.

Erik Sorto… funny because my husband is Eric Soto…
Stay strong man!
At 24:05, what you drank is porridge (Uji in Swahili), specifically Uji wa mtama (porridge made from sorghum flour) not soup (supu in swahili).
At 27:36, the guy is telling you to take the money you paid to the woman. He wanted to pay for you. And at 27:57, he is telling you he would like you to take him to Norway to see the place.
Probably the most important words you may want to learn for your trip are:
1. Maji = Water; Chai = Tea; Chakula = Food
2. Asante = Thank you; Asante sana = Thank you very much
3. Karibu = Welcome ; Kwaheri = Bye bye
4. Ngapi? = How much (money)?
Enjoy the rest of your adventure!

Those mahogany doors were an absolute masterpiece. $1,000 for those would be a huge steal compared to the value they'd be priced in the states. Incredible craftsmanship!

All the kids screaming "Jambo!" was the best part.
Starting reading comments right before this and wondered if I missed it, truly puts a smile on your face.
Cutest part it is!
"how long have you had your bike?"
"20 years"
"Well now it's mine!" 😭😂
Total savage 😅
The bike you rode was a Vintage 1960s Raleigh Superbe Gents 4 Speed Roadster made in England, which looked like it hasn't been serviced or maintained since then. Amazing effort to make it that far in the heat filming.
you seem different in these videos, the most free i've seen you. You look happier, smiling more than i've ever seen you. God Bless brother
The place is so nice and friendly!
He is not wearing the uniform all of us are doing on our face right now to cover our nose and mouth because of what is happening around the world. That's why he can happily smile in Tanzania.
Because he’s finally plugged into the mother board. I hope he does more of Africa.

The carpenters making those doors are world class craftsmen ✊
@Cass Cass What do you mean ? Cheap or Expensive ?
It is too cheap i think. I am willing to pay 2K in Bangladesh
Just reached this point in the video, my god they are talented.
@Cass Cass I'm from Zanzibar and the prices are true I recently got one made fro my house. I paid 1.8 mil around 800USD and that was discounted coz I knew the guy that was making them. These doors are expensive because the timber is imported from mainland(mahigany) and that's what makes it expensive.
Where I live that’s $4000 to $5000 door at least...beautiful work.
Just spent an hour of my life watching a guy bike across Zanzibar and have no regrets
This might be one of Harald's greatest videos...
Headline in newspaper - "Strange man inflates local bike, bread and banana markets"
Headline:' strange man kidnapped after biking on spooky empty road in africa '

I love the overall chipper attitude you have Harold. You know when to bargain when it’s just greedy vendors and when it’s back road vendors you gladly pay the price they say and often give them more $ or any extras you have. I don’t now how you can be so friendly when the locals are just constantly laughing at you. But you take it in stride and always are happy and joyful. Much love and be safe Harold! You show a lot of us parts of the world and cultures some of us we’ll never get to see. This I thank you for and for all then smiles, laughs and cheerfulness you give me watching these.

Stone Town looked 😨 Harold is very very braved.
It looked desolate
"l don't want to recommend it but it's business and he's the owner!.." what a line from Paul Scholes
It's Pool Schoole 😆
😃😃😁
That man had some really beautiful doors. It's a shame they don't export those. Those merchants could get 5-6 times the price in the U.S.
@Cass Cass would be a pretty good idea, if setup well logistically
"Those merchants could get 5-6 times the price in the U.S."
- Sure I don't doubt that they'd cost more in the U.S. but most of that price hike reflects shipping costs, import fees, state sales tax, salary for sales staff and shop rental. Doubt these guys would make any more by shipping and selling in the US. Then there's potentially the cost of obtaining special permits for the wood etc. I know this is the case in Europe where we've banned the import of teak for example unless it comes with a special permit from a licensed producer.
Damn. The effort this man puts to give some quality content to us is remarkable. Love & respect from Sri Lanka.
Harald, thank you so much for sharing these wonderful adventures with us. I am trying to be more brave and wanting to travel. But you go to places I never would have dreamed of going and talking to simple everyday people. It's so nice to see everyone friendly. Thank you for taking me along with you.
"People look. They look really confused. Then I say, "Hello, Jambo." And then... oh, the milk man." I thought Harald was making a joke in reference to his skin but he actually passes by a guy carrying milk on a bike. LOL
😆 😆 😆
lmfao same dude
Yesssssssss! I laughed so hard when he said that, I had no idea there was an actual milk man... beauty!
Harald single handedly inflating the local economy.
@Cass Cass I doubt much tourism will come from the vids I've made thus far (maybe first bargain vid being a small exception) but the next 3 hopefully will 👍
I'm sure it will help somewhat,if only for that certain type of tourist, the badass adventurous kind like Mr Baldr
Love how Harold always keeps supporting all the locals, even if he won't eat or drink whatever the person is selling, he'll make sure to buy his stuffs so that the person gets a sale and then gives the double or even more than the asking price, which of course brings a huge smile to that vendors face. That's what shows how Harold is so caring and respectful towards locals especially, he makes their days and never fails to give a hefty reward to all those who he sees as deserving 🥰
really like how positive harald is. please stay safe and take care of urself!
that bike is probably worth 20$ but I love the fact that u gave him 100, that’s very kind. :)
It's a classic. It's worth more

@Cass Cass He is just a truly good man. Imagine we had this kind of attitude running countries; for better or for worse -- look out for the people. And over generations, we have failed at that. But Harald shows me, there is still some hope.

I love the way you’re making all the locals laugh! You could do a one-man tour through Zanzibar.🤣🤣
Hello! Back with the translation!
Pongwe is very far for a trek on the bicycle; I guess it’s gongo power!
So first of all, the bread was 200 but then because you couldn’t understand and you’re a mzungu the price turned to 400 which is why you got 5 for 2000!
The sign board said karibu mkoa wa kusini which means welcome to the southern region.
The place where you had tea is actually porridge the guys were really surprised! When you asked for change she didn’t have any and the guy was actually telling you take back your money and he was offering to pay for you! It’s the same guy who asked you to take a picture of him with his truck and he said to show the people in Norway his struggles and life!
The door that you saw is called Zanzibari door and it’s very famous and mostly only made in Zanzibar; it is also very expensive as it is hand carved and made from strong wood. They usually last more then 100 years as you might have seen in stone town.
The guy who was putting the wood on the motorbike when they guy asked you why you decided to take the bag and bicycle was telling the other guys when you go back home won’t they ask you why you have that what are you carrying(maybe drugs 😂)
The lady on the way who you asked pongwe at the crossroads and was laughing out load called you a hooligan( muhuni) 😂 she prolly thought you were telling her to go with you 😂
The apartment building you saw in the middle of nowhere is government building like state housing for the people or government employees.
What you had is called mandazi. It’s dough which is lightly fried. Thank you is Asante is Kiswahili or you can even say Shukran like in Arabic.
The kid with the CD player was actually a toy. It’s meant to be wheels and pushed around!
Looking forward to your next video! And if you visit dar es salaam please get in touch and I’d love to show you around!
Gongo FTW! Cheers for elaborating 👍
