  • Treadmill Exercise Test: Horse Heart Rate
This is a short video (canter part only) from the treadmill exercise test carried out for learning purposes at Hartpury College. The aim of the exercise test was to record the changes in horse's heart rate during exercise. Horse was fitted with Polar Equine Heart Rate Monitor and Televet ECG.
Horse: Mynydd I'm The Man (Freddie), 7 years old gelding, show jumper/all rounder
    HEART RATE
Rest Heart Rate: 33 (which wasn't really his rest HR as this was measured after fitting the equipment)
Weight before exercise test: 584 kg
    Step 1: 5 minutes walk, 1.6 m/s, 2% incline; HR = 77 bpm
    Step 2: 2 minutes trot, 3.2 m/s, 2% incline; HR = 98 bpm
    Step 3: 1 minute trot, 3.2 m/s, 4% incline; HR = 113 bpm
    Step 4: 1 minute canter, 5.5 m/s, 4% incline; HR = 142 bpm
    Step 5: 1 minute canter, 6 m/s, 5% incline; HR = 150 bpm
    RECOVERY
After 1 minute walk, HR = 77 bpm
After 2 minutes walk, HR = 56 bpm
After 3 minutes walk, HR = 62 bpm
After 4 minutes walk, HR = 54 bpm
Weight after exercise: 574 kg (10 kg lost: sweat and droppings)
Freddie's maximum heart rate was calculated as 217 bpm, the highest heart rate recorded was 150 bpm which means that Freddie worked at 69% of his maximum heart rate.
Interesting fact: incline is better than speed
