Art is in the eye of the beholder. I love the artistic choice to put distortion in her voice for that part. You know she could easily hit those notes without the distortion so it's not a skill thing. And the fact that she cried during the performance tells you that its coming from the heart. This was truly a display of raw artistic expression right here, not that manufactured shit you hear on the radio.

What does it mean
Its so powerful, it made me cry. Miley is a soulful singer and I love her. And people are talking about the screaming part, and some of them are laughing at it saying "omg she can scream!". But, as a Musician myself, I can tell you that not many people can even scream being perfectly in tune. It is an exceptionally difficult job to do that. Miley pulled it off without any flaw, and at the same time, she made that "screaming" part the soul of the entire song.
She didn't. She is using her throat, it can damage her voice.
She's out of tune.

Not even close to true. Rick Astley's song wasn't bad. It was a great song, but people have meme'd it like crazy and now nobody can genuinely enjoy the song anymore because it's been meme'd to death. For the longest time, I couldn't take Sound of Silence seriously because of how freaking meme'd it was. Hello by Adele, great song, meme'd like crazy.
But get it; that's different. Nobody was making fun of the way the singers themselves sang. But ultimately, I used to laugh my ass off at the screaming part of this song. But once I heard the whole song and what led up to her screaming, I actually cried. I didn't expect to come to this song and find it as emotional as I found it. I too thought her screaming was funny and stupid, but not really anymore. It's all based on what you like and whether you can take her screaming seriously or not. I can, maybe you can't. And that's alright. People don't meme things that are objectively bad, they meme things they think are bad. It's subjective.

I echo sentiments below. This is actually a brilliant song. Miley is taking us on her journey through the grief of losing a pet and she lets us in! Everybody feels her emotion when they hear this and they tap into their own emotion from their own experiences. And those screams were heartbreaking, pleading for answers but beautifully controlled.
I'm almost 60 and I dig rap and metal and watch obscure horror movies. I think for anyone over, say, 30, who has more mature musical likes feels a bit embarrassed to like Miley. I get it cause I can be as well. It's the Hannah Montana legacy. But that girl is all grown up now. She's got an incredible voice, has cut some brilliant records and she's drop dead gorgeous with a body to match (not that that means anything). I think we owe it to ourselves and Miley to let ourselves be free to love her. She deserves it. She's worth it. I love you Miley!
I am almost 40. Grew up with my dad listening to Pink Floyd, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Janis, the Stones, LedZep, Doors, Rory Gallagher and the likes. But man, Miley is something else. I used to snort when she came up, but then I heard her version of Jolene a few years ago and dug a bit deeper to see more of her. I love her now.
I honestly think people should stop making fun of this. Yes, I can take a joke but if you actually listen to the lyrics and the song it talks about screaming and her screaming was actually very emotional.
