I am so sad, that at age 48 and a huge U2 fan, I'm only discovering this song "40". As I get older, I appreciate more the heavenly and soulful lyrics of each of their songs. It has more profound and deeper meaning with every passing of my life experiences. So glad I had one chance in my humble life to hear them live in El Paso, Texas in the early 90's in the beautiful Sun Bowl stadium carved out of the Franklin Mountains. It was a beautiful setting for such an incredible band.
Sometimes many of us get mad at Bono and his ego, the company he keeps, his antics whatever, and then we listen to this and we remember what their music meant to us in those good old days
40 - U2 I waited patiently for the Lord He inclined and heard my cry He lifted me up out of the pit Out of the miry clay I will sing, sing a new song I will sing, sing a new song How long to sing this song? How long to sing this song? How long, how long, how long How long to sing this song? He set my feet upon a rock Made my footsteps firm Many will see Many will see and hear I will sing, sing a new song I will sing, sing a new song How long to sing this song? How long to sing this song? How long, how long, how long How long to sing this song? Psalm 40 I waited patiently for the Lord; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the Lord. Blessed is that man that maketh the Lord his trust, and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies. Many, O Lord my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done, and thy thoughts which are to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered. Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire; mine ears hast thou opened: burnt offering and sin offering hast thou not required. Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written of me, I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart. I have preached righteousness in the great congregation: lo, I have not refrained my lips, O Lord, thou knowest. I have not hid thy righteousness within my heart; I have declared thy faithfulness and thy salvation: I have not concealed thy lovingkindness and thy truth from the great congregation. Withhold not thou thy tender mercies from me, O Lord: let thy lovingkindness and thy truth continually preserve me. For innumerable evils have compassed me about: mine iniquities have taken hold upon me, so that I am not able to look up; they are more than the hairs of mine head: therefore my heart faileth me. Be pleased, O Lord, to deliver me: O Lord, make haste to help me. Let them be ashamed and confounded together that seek after my soul to destroy it; let them be driven backward and put to shame that wish me evil. Let them be desolate for a reward of their shame that say unto me, Aha, aha. Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee: let such as love thy salvation say continually, The Lord be magnified. But I am poor and needy; yet the Lord thinketh upon me: thou art my help and my deliverer; make no tarrying, O my God.
How perceptive I am! Love this song forever! One of my fave groups. Watched this vid many times over the years. Think am only now realizing Edge and Adam were confused and grabbed to wrong instruments. Did they Mili Vanilla us?! Fake?! LOL

Don’t be sad. This song’s lyrics are actually almost word for word taken from part of Psalms 40.
You're lucky, discovered 40 in this fourty
@@marktaylor2502I loved this song many, many years before one day I'm reading my Bible.......and Wait, what? I know these words.......
I am sad I discovered this song at 14. Didn't know where the name "40" came from. Til o was about 25. And have hated u2 ever since.

so true, and sometimes what it newly means to us now
And then we remember what a megalomaniacal asshole He is. Love the music, but wouldn't lose any sleep if he wondered into a dark alley somewhere.
40 is actually Psalm 40....blew me away when I first realized that! we sung it at church! Amazing!!
Yes, it is! I hope many will see and understand...
@@brettscott8288many will see. Many will see and fear.
Yup. Who else could get 100,00 people singing along to Psalms 40?
I have asked worship leaders to play it in church... waiting for one to take me up on it...
I love this song. One of my U2 favourites.
Me to
Larry Mullen Jr. Is easily the coolest MF that ever lived.

Awesome song! Cool that Edge is playing bass and Adam is playing guitar :D
''For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that has overcome the world: our faith.''

AMEN❤❤
Psalm 40. Who'd think the bible would supply the lyric to such an iconic U2 song. These guys are amazing. Always have been, always will be.
Many of their songs are straight from the Bible... actually all of their albums have Biblical references.
I give Thanks to all my blessings including U2.
"I'm not even the best bass player in U2." -Adam Clayton
bionicbigfoot that's a Ringo-ism..
4:15 Adam putting out melodious little riffs. With a bit of slide!
Adam nailed it in this!!
He did. He totally did. The long, wailing, mournful tunes, the little jam in the end...
He made it his own.
40 - U2
I waited patiently for the Lord
He inclined and heard my cry
He lifted me up out of the pit
Out of the miry clay
I will sing, sing a new song
I will sing, sing a new song
How long to sing this song?
How long to sing this song?
How long, how long, how long
How long to sing this song?
He set my feet upon a rock
Made my footsteps firm
Many will see
Many will see and hear
I will sing, sing a new song
I will sing, sing a new song
How long to sing this song?
How long to sing this song?
How long, how long, how long
How long to sing this song?

U2 wrote this song but nobody plays and sings it like Michael W. Smith.
compose* this song the lyrics are from the bible
That's a touching ode to MWS, but I beg to differ
David wrote
In Europe mr.Michael j.Smith is a perfect unknown
