Sparrow Rescue - part one

  • On July 5, 2016, this baby sparrow was found incessantly chirping for food, at midnight! Someone had placed him in a container in a tree in front of a busy, brightly-lit hotel, and no adult birds were present to feed him, or keep him warm. Unable to find the original nest, human intervention became necessary for its survival.

    I had a house sparrow a few days old. Called her wonderful. She got fed constantly.and eventually she'd eat on her own. Fly around crawl up your side and sleep. She eventually was take outside I'd love her cage open and in a tree. I'd come home she'd land on my shoulder and we'd go in .3wks latter she showed up with a male and they flew off. I kept cage outside for a few wks never saw her again.i can only hope she had a great life and babies.

    Mike, I saved a sparrow who wouldn't open his/her beak. I was watching your video for advice. Once "Beep Beep" (kids named it) heard your bird, he/she joined the conversation and I was Finally able to feed this sweet baby.

      Leslie Harris-LeBard I recently found a baby sparrow and the same thing happened😂 He didn't eat for a whole day then I started playing this and he immediately ate a lot. I gave him dog food mixed with water until it was mushy like applesauce, through in some mashed meal worms and earth worms and he loved it!❤

    I raised a sparrow, my dog found two on the ground under the tree they were in, I built a cage and made a nest for them. one died the other made it and when he got his feathers it jus wanted to leave, so I opened the cage . it flew out and went right back in the tree he fell out of. I hoped it survived. its a real job, they eat constantly,

    I found a fledgling in a pool of water. It looked dead, but I noticed its feet shaking. Looked like the very last movements before death. Just in case I fetched it out of the water, it was very near death, most likely spent the night in the water. I put it near heater and it came around a bit more. as it neared being dry, I pet it a bit but it did not respond much. I began to look on the internet for what I should feed it. Heard the scolding of others for those who pick up birds who appear alone but are not because their parents are always near them while they learn to fly and eat on their own. So I thought if I could only chirp like a bird, maybe it would have hope. So I looked up on youtube and this video came up. I played the chirping loud for the bird and it instantly began to chirp back. It actually moved around a bit. Then I heard those that wrote how the parents are always near, so I sat it out side near the spot I found it. Many sparrows were outside and they were chirping, the little bird instantly began calling out. I prayed the parents would hear it. Not but 4 maybe 5 minutes and it flew out of the bucket and right to it's parents near by. They greeted each other and have hours later now been flying around out front. Never had anything quite like it happen to me before. Happy ending indeed. So this video brought life back to a little bird and those who spoke of not picking up birds that appear lost were so very right. Made my day, and just wanted to share. God bless

    Great video. I also have a sparrow that is older than yours. I found him yesterday trapped inside my school hallway while I was picking up my sister from Summer Camp. There are no other sparrows or nests around that area.
    Was unsure what to do, and have been keeping him/her inside a box filled with grass in my house. It's not very lively and seems to be very weak. It also may have a leg injury as it has difficulty keeping itself upright. I've been hand feeding it bread and a bit of water but it refuses to eat most times. The internet tells me to feed it protein - either puppy food or insects. I do not have either and there are no pet shops in my area. The temperature in my house is about 21-22 Degrees Celsius and I have difficulty keeping him warm. Used some cotton cloth with some paper towels and grass to create a temporary nest.
    I have also taken it outside to a park a few blocks away from my school where it interacted with some other sparrows, though none of them appeared to be the parents. It can not fly yet at the moment. I'm not sure if that is because it hasn't learned yet; isn't mature enough; or if it is because of the leg injury.
    I'm afraid it will die. Please help.

    • @mikeyfranz
      @mikeyfranz  Před 8 lety

      You have to feed protein, because it is growing like crazy every day, it will not survive on bread and water. Any store in your area will sell dry kitten food or puppy food, that you can soak in water until it is soft and spongy, and feed it little pieces of that carefully with a tweezer. Alternately, you can feed it any food that has protein, like Gerber baby food that is high in protein, with chicken, multigrain cereal that you add water to, like in oatmeal consistency, or cooked egg yolk, even bits of scrambled egg, tiny pieces of fruits like strawberry or blueberry.
      If it has no feathers it has to be kept at 90°F, if it has feathers 80° is OK. You can use some kind of heating pad, or a hot water bottle that is covered with something so it does not get burned.
      Keep us posted!

    • @mc6148
      @mc6148 Před 8 lety

      Thank you! Fed it some cooked egg yolk with tweezers and it seemed all right but kind of weird feeding a bird chicken eggs every few hours. It does have feathers and I've put it next to a warm water bottle. It's weaker than it was yesterday though.. I think it might be sick or stressed. I have washed my hands before and after every time in contact with it. Btw, can I catch a disease from it/ Should I take it to some sort of vet?

    I also found a little baby sparrow outside. He couldn't fly properly, only a meter or so, he would mostly run and jump about a foot or so.. I took him home to help him get bigger but he did not eat nor drink. He would sit by the window and callin all the time, it looked like he was calling his mother. By day 3 I got worried about him not eating. I thought maybe his trying to tell me that he is not happy that I brought him in, maybe the mother is somewhere outside and waiting for him, maybe he would be better off outside and the mother would look after him, and many more maybes.. as I don't have much experience about baby sparrows and how long it would take for them to trust me and start eating the food I offer them, finally I decided to let him go out.. I'm still not sure if I did a right or wrong thing.. but I didn't want him to die of starvation inside my home.

    We have our own baby sparrow. She will not let us pet her without snapping at the 'finnies'. It's so adorable but after 2 1/2 yrs, it's getting kind of annoying that she doesn't like being loved and petted. She'll insist on landing on our shoulder but doesn't like it when I try to show her affection. Is there any way of getting a sparrow to learn to like being petted? She's going to be with us for at least the next 5 years so...
