  • Stretchy wraps, like this beautiful bamboo Izmi Wrap, are perfect for newborns. But how long can you safely use one for?

Realistically, you're going to get the most use out of your stretchy wrap in your baby's first 2-6 months, especially while they're still in the snuggly 'fourth trimester' newborn phase.
Once your baby starts becoming more alert for long periods and developing their upper body strength, it's likely the stretchy wrap will feel less supportive. You might feel like your need to hold on to them as they're liable to try and lean backward or out the side of the wrap, no matter how tight you tie it.
This is the point where many parents move on to more structured baby carriers like the Ergobaby or Tula Baby, or one of the MANY other brands available. Other parents who love the fabric feel will move on to a non-stretchy woven wrap or Meh Dai.
Does that mean you 'can't' use your stretchy wrap anymore? Not at all!
Many are safety tested - and usable - up to big toddler weights. This Izmi wrap (a 2-way stretchy wrap - which is not as robust as more robust 1-way stretchy wrap) is safety tested for babies up to a whopping 20lbs/9kg. It's not going to be anywhere near as supportive as a non-stretchy sling or carrier, BUT for naps at home, for short trips and to soothe and calm an older baby or toddler on a rough day - they're still brilliant!
Here, Eszter (Wear My Baby Chelsea) and Lily show an alternative way to tie your stretchy wrap, to make it more supportive for bigger kids. (For those of you who are familiar with woven wraps - yes this is a Front Wrap Cross Carry).
Note how Lily has her arms free (you can do this from 4months+), BUT she is feeling co-operative so not flinging herself back. If you've got a 'flinger' on your hands then either wrap them with their arms in or reach for something non-stretchy for added security :)
