Moonlighting is an American television series that aired on ABC from March 3, 1985, to May 14, 1989. The network aired a total of 66 episodes (67 in syndication as the pilot is split into two episodes). Starring Cybill Shepherd and Bruce Willis as private detectives, the show was a mixture of drama, comedy, and romance, and was considered to be one of the first successful and influential examples of comedy-drama, or "dramedy", emerging as a distinct television genre.
The show's theme song was performed by jazz singer Al Jarreau and became a hit. The show is also credited with making Willis a star, while re-launching the career of Shepherd after a string of lackluster projects. In 1997, the episode "The Dream Sequence Always Rings Twice" was ranked #34 on TV Guide's 100 Greatest Episodes of All Time. In 2007, the series was listed as one of Time magazine's "100 Best TV Shows of All-Time." The relationship between David and Maddie was included in TV Guide 's list of the best TV couples of all time.
The series revolved around cases investigated by the Blue Moon Detective Agency and its two partners, Madelyn "Maddie" Hayes (Shepherd) and David Addison Jr. (Willis). The show, with a mix of mystery, sharp dialogue, and sexual tension between its two leads, introduced Bruce Willis to the world and brought Cybill Shepherd back into the spotlight after a nearly decade-long absence.
The characters were introduced in a two-hour pilot episode that preceded the series proper. The show's storyline begins with the reversal of fortune of Maddie Hayes, a former model who finds herself bankrupt after her accountant embezzles all of her liquid assets. She is left saddled with several failing businesses formerly maintained as tax write-offs, one of which is the City of Angels Detective Agency, helmed by the carefree David Addison.
Between the pilot and the first one-hour episode, David persuades Maddie to keep the business and run it as a partnership. The agency is renamed Blue Moon Investigations because Maddie was most famous for being the spokesmodel for the (fictitious) Blue Moon Shampoo Company. In many episodes, she was recognized as "the Blue Moon shampoo girl," if not by name.
I’m 47 years old and I still remember this was my que to go take a shower and go to bed. Damn those 80s are gone forever people, and all we have are those memories. I’m gonna tear up now
Man I miss the 80's and 90's. What iconic decades have there been since? After 911 America has been declining artistically, culturally, economically and in every other category. I think that we can now look back and understand how pivotal 911 truly was for our country.

Same here, but the funny part of it is that I never watched this show till now when I am almost 35.
Was just reamong myself away to when this was airing on Swedish TV. Was some reallt nice years back then:)
My college sweetheart and I would watch this together in my dorm room. It was our ritual. She would bring a Cherry coke for us to share. Rest in peace Tracy

Sorry for your loss. It's painful

I was young but still remember the show when it first aired. I miss my neighborhood, I miss my mom, I miss those nights of watching our shows on a small black and white TV.
Back when TV was SPECTACULAR! 💙
Amen to that.
Damn, this Moonlighting intro brings me right back to 1987. I was just out of the army, making good money, was single, had an awesome car..good times.
Gud times..gud times😎
Yep 87 is when I was talked into going into the Army LOL. This intro brings it all back!
Oh my gosh I’m 40 years old now and I still remember the first I watched moon lighting
Tengo la misma edad, y al escuchar este tema me pasa lo mismo, distintos idiomas, distintos países pero mismo sentimiento, la magia de la música por suerte no conoce fronteras. Saludos desde Argentina colega.
Makes me want to cry.
Oh my gosh I am 54 years old and this show was too good. If Cybill and Bruce got along this show would have been an all-time great! Bruce became a superstar in the movies and Cybill's beauty and grace lasted for many years from The Last Picture Show to Moonlighting to her CBS show in the mid 90's which was really good.Moonlighting was special!
If ur 40 then u were just a kid when this aired, u actually remember it?
@@Baharigak - I'm also 40yrs old and I remember this show very well too. It was one of my Mom's fav shows and she would let me watch it with her sometimes. She also taped every episode on VHS so we were able to enjoy the series even after it ended. I also remember the show Dallas extremely well too, another fav of my Mom's. Point being my memories of the late 80's remain strong to this day. Some people just have better memories than others I guess. 🤷♀️
I can totally see why one would stop doing whatever they were doing and come sit in front of the TV when this theme song came on! One, they don’t make theme songs like this one anymore, and, two, that crackling chemistry between Willis and Shepherd was just legendary!
Yes, legendary! I thought I was going to go crazy waiting for them to get together! I had a huuuuuge crush on "David"! Ah, those were the days!
Yes, I think the other aspect is that they never "slept" together in real life. That is what they claim, but I think it enhanced the friction between them.
Cybill Shepherd and Bruce Willis had amazing chemistry. This song helped.
People did these back then not so much now😕
I miss the 80's so much ! 🤦♂️
I do too man, I do too! :0(
I'm in the same boat as you.
I was born in 83 it’s depressing seeing this haha

Facts
They don't make em like this anymore. I miss enjoyable, witty, fun and engaging shows like this and Hart to Hart that EVERYBODY watched from little kids to grandma and grandpa. Back then it seemed like everyone watched the same show in the same household and around the world. R.I.P. Al Jarreau, this is a kickass theme song, man.
I LOVED hart to hart!!!
@@Ivy94F Me too! Great chemistry between the leads and very fun and sexy.
The ATEAM and dallas good days
@@cerianne2783 Yes! And Magnum, Knight Rider, Miami Vice, Who's The Boss, The Incredible Hulk, The Cosby Show, The Equalizer etc. So many gems, man.
This was a lot like Cheers in how it made the connection wait far too long. It was maddening how ping it took for them to get together
This is what the eighties was like, all wrapped up in one show.
I just remember a time when it was my Dad, Mom and sisters... being a kid and having no responsibilities except going to school. This used to come on, I think on Monday nights? My sisters watched and we all loved the theme song. So much has changed but this brings back good memories. The 80s were magical ya'll! No other decade can touch them!!
It was Tuesdays at 9. And I so feel you. The 80s had some of the most iconic movies, tv shows and music that today can't touch at all. There's nothing.... distinctive? about this current era imo. The sixties, seventies, eighties and nineties seem to have such a specific, distinctive feel and vibe to them that makes people so nostalgic now. Special times.
I use to watch it not regular, we'll have church service at night sometimes for a special event, some how manage to get home this will be on.. it was a treat
At fridays nights was airing on in Türkiye ...only the difference was this, all the feelings ,first loving ages times.... puting yourself instead of David ,and your love instead of Maddie...and loving and living the episodes with these feelings....
Same but I can’t tell you anything about the episodes because I don’t remember. 😔
Now it’s just bills every month
I remember when my parents would watch this show in the 80s. I was never allowed to stay up for it. The theme is iconic. Definitely catapulted Willis into stardom. If you dig up interviews from the 80s, when Willis was a bartender, people knew he was going to be a star. 80s was everything.
The chemistry between him & Cyrillic Shepard was palpable.
Cybill - autocorrect went rogue🥴
@@davisholman8149mainly because they never slept together
The 80's was a sunset that lasted almost 15 years.. and then the sun set.
Well said😊
I get so nostalgic when see this, the 80's were such a beautiful time compared to the chaos we're living in now.
It was . . but I guess we lived in ignorance to be honest :) Pre internet - a different world! We only knew our own communities and we all watched the same TV but it was good TV. Reagan was good, the USSR bad. The internet and an awareness of what really goes on in the world changed everything! Happy memories tho . .
Lmaoo u mean when child kidnapping was at an all time high, we were on the brink of nuclear war, and a narcissistic madman ruled the country? Oh yeah sure nothing like today 🙃
@Cats&Bats Bitter ain't you? Lol things weren't perfect but a helluva lot better than now. The best tv shows and movies too that they're still ripping off today which means now most of Hollywood is lacking creativity and drive.
Hate to tell you it's exactly the same as it was in the 80's. No one gives a shit about anyone.
@Cassidy Alexis-Starchild First off that's bull and second, might want to check into getting some Xanax.
My 10-year-old self had no clue what good stuff I was watching but man I lived for this show. I throw on the DVDs whenever I need an escape from reality and a look back at simpler times.
I remember when this premiered as a 2 hour TV movie! I always thought this was one of the most glamorous and unusual opening credit sequences ever filmed. Paired with Al Jarreau's haunting vocals made an indelible impression. This show aired at 9:00pm PST every Tuesday night on ABC. Nearly 40 years later and I can still remember that. That's crazy.
Cybill Shepherd and Bruce Willis had amazing chemistry. This song helped.
I get so emotional when I hear this. My grandmother loved this show and each time I hear it makes me miss her dearly. Tears run down my eyes at how fast time flies.
I used to watch this show daily with my mother. It's a melancholic feeling.

My thoughts and feelings exactly. I remember so vividly watching this with my Mom, and seeing this video just hit me so fiercely how much I miss her now she's gone far too soon.
Boy does this bring back memories. I was a kid in the 80s and this was my mom’s favorite show. I wish we could go back to those days!
Yeah this and dallas, A-team, good days
100% the same for me. Thank you for CZcams!
RIP Al Jarreau aged 76.
This was part of my Tuesday night as a kid.It was Who's The Boss Growing Pains and Moonlighting.I would sing each theme show each time it came on.Great Shows Great Memories.
YES! I was in front of the TV tuned to ABC from 7pm to 9pm. Actually a tradition that continued on since the Happy Days/Laverne & Shirley/Three's Company/Too Close For Comfort line-up
Cherish your family and memories. I remember this as a kid in the 80's also with those shows.
Mine too, I remember doing the same exact thing....good memories.
The intro makes me sad because in Spain was on Sunday what meant the following day we had to go to school 😂😂
Darn right. And now "lockdown drill" the next day in school. For the most part we watched positive things. What a coincidence.
Memories of care free days in the 80s and even those people from that era that you lost 😢😢😢
I used to watch this with my dad and now he only has weeks to live. Oh take me back.. 💔
Sorry. Hope you are well.
I'm so sorry.
Back in the 80's, the very first time I watched this show's opening and heard this song I thought "Wow, who is this amazing voice, and where can I hear more?"
Within a year I was at my first live Jarreau concert and I was hooked. Great days.
Wow I remember as a kid during the '80s just being overwhelmed with great TV shows (intro songs included). Memories I will forever cherish 👍
I was in my mid-20s at the time. The show was a big hit on ABC and the theme song was a big hit on the radio. Good times. Very good times.
Exciting, aspirational, neon lights, city scapes, creativity, pastels, fun, big hair, real telephones, wit, seduction and all to the greatest soundtrack imaginable. God I miss the 80s and I was only a kid observing it all.
I really love the intro's version of Moonlighting more than the radio version 🤷♂️ The city scenes bring me back to the 80s with sunsets and seeing the hard working class travel home and to bars after work. I have a warm feeling about US having more back then while financially making less without today's technology and social media vices. Eating T.V Dinners and having a house phone or a phone booth on the corner. No 24hr news or Internet but we made it through the night until the next time we'd meet face to face.
you know, we may have better technology now, but when factored for inflation income has not gone up since the 80s

I was born 2001 and I loved shit from the 80s. Just like this. Even ALF and Married with Children.
A sphincter says "what"?
I watched a lot of reruns of 80s shows but i was born in the 90s they where not retro yet when i was a kid.
This, Dynasty, Falcon Crist, and Dallas were the epitome of 80's evening night tv shows, and what it was like back then.
Don't forget Knots Landing.
The Equalizer and Tour of Duty were awesome as well
knight rider
Johnny Carson and Letterman to end the day.
What about Cheer’s Miami vice and Spencer for hire
i was 20 in 1985 and were all longing for the old days when we were younger and stronger and happier
I was 20 too. We didn’t know how good we had it, however imperfect life is even in the best of times.
It’s amazing how I could relate to most of the comments here despite the fact that I was 14 or 15 when I would watch this show late at night at a cramped single room home in Lagos, Nigeria. I was staying with my sister and her husband then. They haven’t had kids at that point and we would stay up late to catch shows like this. The coolness, charm and funny attitude of Bruce Willis’ character was so inspiring and this is how I still see him to this day. Cybill Shepherd was elegant, beautiful and also very funny and made me see blondes in a totally different way.
Wow! That's cool that you got this show in Nigeria at the time.
yeah, total 80s guy archetype
It's great that people around the world watched the same tv shows, listened to the same music. Shared connections like these really remind you that we're all a lot more alike than we are different.
Los Angeles, the 80s. Good times.
Each episode felt and looked like a movie, great production in sound and direction it was ahead of it's time
This show's intro holds a special place in my heart
What memories I have of living in LA during this time! Loved this show and loved LA!!

I find it funny that many of us just find back to this tune, after like..decades :)

Still gives me goosebumps 😍
Once David and Maddie FINALLY got together, that was it. Killed the show. No more Moonlighting. I remember learning that Cybill Shepherd used to insist on a softening filter when she was being filmed. Back then that looked very obvious Ha! The camera would be on him, and things looked normal. When it would then jump to her, everything would get all pink, glowy and fuzzy. I think SNL (or some comedy show?) did a skit on that. She had a bit of a reputation for being difficult and snotty.
The way the photos are displayed and panned seem so timeless
Exactly
I was 23 years old in 85, what a decade!
I was 21. Loved the 80's music.
@@TheOnlySgtRockI turned 10. I miss the 80s!
I was 25 and I knew that the 80s was a much more fun decade than the 70s (don't get me wrong: I love the 70s, but in the 80s people seemed happier and the future seemed brighter).
I was 21. TV shows during that time had the best intro/outro music.
So happy that this show is going to be on Hulu next month. October 10th
Such Nostalgia best time of my life, best show on television
Not just the music, but also these nostalgic images. I want to be there, in Los Angeles in the early 80s when those images where captured. Pure magic. Message to all who are feeling nostalgic. Keep in mind, 40 years, what ever we're doing now, will seem like magic as well.
Right one thing I loved was the intros then especially told you what the show was about
Like Since they're both private investigators , they show snap shots of people and places like an PI would
When ever I want to take a trip back into time when life was happy and pleasant I watch this intro !
Such a classy theme. Thank you Maestro Jarreau for the music
This TV show was launched in Russia in 1995. I was 3 at that time and credits with Al Jarreau opening theme made impressions for lifetime! Thanks to Moonlighting I fell in love with the USA and particularly with LA! It had been my dream to visit LA before 2014 when I visited USA! Certainly LA became one of my favourite places in the world!
Absolutely loved this, back in the eighties. One of the best American imports into Britain, along with Cheers and Miami Vice. ❤
The first and probably the role I loved the best, Bruce Willis did. Sad to hear his career had a hard stop. Life happens, I guess. This intro will instantly teleport me to my childhood. What s great series ! Thank you !
One of the most memorable and powerful TV series opening... Al Jarreau and those photo slides are complementing each other and that what makes it perfect...
I came here tonight Moonlighting family because it was just announced that all 5 seasons of our favorite show is now on HULU!!!!
Who’s going back to watch with me?
Enjoy everyone! Now the 80s and this amazing theme song never have to end!
Hill Street Blues, Moonlighting, Perfect Strangers, and the Great American Hero great theme songs.
Believe it or not I’m walking on air, I never thought I could feel so freeee….
As a kid I loved to watch Moonlighting come on this sing is so perfect.
Glenn Gorden Caron made this show something special and he has wrote some other great shows too ! -He's a genius ! - Moonlighting was & still is something special to me - the storylines the humour - Bruce Willis was a breath of fresh air back then ! Cybill Shepherd brought the glamour to the show and also the humour - The way she would pull a face or snort down her nose - Stumble around her office in he muddy stockings with a heel missing off one of her shoes - You watched each episode not knowing what stunts they would be using in this show that broke all the rules Thanks for reminding me of those better times
I am only here to relive a moment in history that I perceived to be merely a dream…only to realize that I had lived this moment and that, somehow, life and reality itself, had escaped me. Long live the 80’s. Long live “me.”
We can bring it back. With great effort.
