A peahen utters an unusual call...then she and a peacock (heard in the background) keep repeating the call she utters. Taken at the L.A. County Arboretum in June 2010.
Just played it for my peacock and peahen and they both responded with signs of distress. He start a new making the call and they puffed their neck feathers out.
Confirming that is a distress call. Peacocks and peahens will honk and/or make that "cuckoo" sound when they think there's trouble. Hens with eggs will make the same noises when they get up off their eggs to find food, to lead predators away from the unprotected eggs.
This is a danger call. My peafowl make this noise if the see a dog and sometimes it is also a locater call to find other peafowl or if they are stressed out they will make this call.
@MinxFox I think she made this call to be in contact with her relative peacock, since right after this she disappeared to "nest" for a month...and then she reappeared a month later with 3 peachicks. I think she contacted him to let him know she'd be gone for awhile.

I don't know about Peafowl, but a lone Peahen has been roaming around making those very calls. She appears to have lost the lone male and is looking for companionship in a roaming chicken. They often will fight, but they haven't injured one another.
Y'all keep saying they make these noises when they think there's trouble. So, tell me something... All those times we humans ever say "Uh-oh..." did we learn it from these guys?
The description says a peacock responded to her call however which is heard in the background. So she probably got freaked out by something and started making the call
holy shit sir this is an amazing peahen call. never have i heard the mate call of the boisterous peahen jesus its so cool let me know wut you other peahen lovers have to say send me peahen pics pl0x

How does that sound lead predators away?
Thanks for your comment. The peahen clearly wanted to be in touch with the peacock who uttered the call back to her.
That's the distress call. They do it when they're separated, too.
Yes you're right thats the same sound my peahen did when i first got her to me sounds like a goose
I call it the "bamp-caw" sound.
+Torwyn11 I'd love to know the reason for the name you chose for it. Thanks for watching!
It sounds like that's what they're saying. "BAMP CAWWWWW!"
She is calling for her mate.
Almost sounds like it's saying "Hello!"
+civilwildman LOL! Thanks for your comment! Have a great week!

Thank you for your comment. The peahen could be using the call to find the peacock or to draw attention to something.
My peahen who i raised and follows me around did this when i cleaned out their coop
Very interesting. She wanted to call attention to it. Have a great week!
I love it
Thank you so much! Happy Day!

The peacock in the background called back to her.

All those times we humans ever say "Uh-oh..." did we learn it from these guys?
That's a good question!!! Thank you for your comment and thanks for watching!
So funny.
Sounds like uh oh
Where’s this place? (So much peacocks & peahens)
At the Los Angeles Arboretum in California, United States.
I have got pecans and peacocks at my house and turkeys
@AndromedaChao2 LOL!
By Zoology, This Is A Destress Call, As This Is Uncommon To Hear This Call Is Probably For A Lost Mate.
The description says a peacock responded to her call however which is heard in the background. So she probably got freaked out by something and started making the call
Would this call disturbed the neighbours?
This footage was taken at the Los Angeles Arboretum, so everyone who visits is used to their calls.
That female peafowl the Peahen did say YAHOO! YAHOO! YAHOO! YAHOO! YAHOO!
+Dustin Griffith It's "A-ho, A-ho, A-ho." Thanks for watching.
Do peacocks make this call as well or is this call exclusive to peahens?
Peacocks make it as well. In this video, a peacock in the background which you can't see is answering the peahen.
peacocklover27 it sounds like a broken trumpet
