- We're back to Queen in 1982, looking at how they start a show. I talk a lot in this one, so for the people that asked for more talking, here it is lol! Apologies to the rest!

Brian May said that they never made money on their tours, until 1986. No sponsorship back then. Every penny they made touring, they poured back into their show. The whole lighting rig was original and designed by Queen. You are amazing at deconstructing a Queen performance enabling a regular person the ability to understand. Thank you so much!!!
No problem!
Thank you for a terrific reaction...me sitting here applauding you...yes, Queen were their own genre...also about Roger and John...People might be more aware of the drums rather than John’s masterful bass playing..so shout out to Deaky...Hi John, I hope you’re keeping well🌺
I LOVE Queen and they're definitely in a league of their own. I really admire them all individually too. I think their motto was probably "play hard or go home - anything else is a waste of time."
This is just one example of why they were the best live rock band ever!
I saw Queen about 1982 in Chicago and I was not even a huge fan back then. But, I didn't know it until this concert, but Queen could rock and roll like no other. Just incredible. Have seen hundreds of concerts but I rate Queen numero uno. Because a huge fan afterwards. The live albums just couldn't capture the live sound with its raw power.
Yeah they were awesome, but to be there must have been amazing.
I seen Queen The Game tour in Columbus Ohio
While in high school in the late 70s I saw Queen at the Omni in Atlanta. Pushed my way to the stage (concerts were different then) and touched Freddie Mercury and Brian May on the foot. I remember Brian May watching all of us in the front while playing amazing lead guitar!
Awesome!
You must have seen them on either February 21st 1977 or December 8th 1977.
So lucky. What a great memory.
Another great job Fil. I'm so glad you say Queen was more than a rock band! People who don't really know Queen say they were a rock band, but people who understand Queen know they were way more than that, they spread across most genres of music.
One interesting thing I notice about this video is that is shows how macho Freddie became in the later years Queen toured. Up until 1977, he was performing in a leotard, toasting the audience with champagne, and acting as camp as a row of tents (and it was great). But here you can see he is very much the alpha male on stage. The man obviously knew how to adjust his performing style to move with the times.
👍
I saw Queen at New Bingley Hall twice in the late 70's. The first one was full leotard mode the second one they kicked off with Tie Your Mother Down.
@@joylunn3445 Too cool! I got to see them perform at Mount Smart Stadium in Auckland in 1985. Freddie was heavily intoxicated, as he had spent the day knocking back vodkas with Tony Hadley, but I still had a great time! I would have loved to have seen them in the 1970s.
kerryloc I would have loved to see Freddie getting drunk with Tony Hadley.
@@imgoodatmoaning9561 It was certainly hilarious when Hadley came out onstage to join the band in a chaotic rendition of 'Jailhouse Rock'! As he told the story years later, Freddie turned to him during the song and said, "Hadley you bastard, I'm completely pissed!"
Queen owned the stage. Period.
👍
You can tell they loved their fans and each other
Definitely!
Queen was in a category all their own, saw them 5 or 6 times and never saw a bad show. Live Killers Tour was the best imho!
Awesome!
Princes of the Un-i-verse! Blast of total joy! Right! All four excellent musicians! They also understood how to construct a concert--start of loud and fast, stirring up the crowd, take it down and touch everyone's heart, and then blast out an ending that would leave people up and exhausted! They understood how to strategically use the differences in dynamics. Oh, I love Queen!
Yeah they were epic!
QUEEN; greatest band ever
Amen!
I keep hearing new(old footage) live performances from them, and keep getting floored.
i dont believe that any band was more precise in knowing exactly what they wanted to do ,and how to go about doing it.both in and out of the studio.i love thier first album ,and your absolutley correct they mastered many forms of music.god i graduated high school in 82 lol, rock on fil.
Cool!
Saw them at Madison Square Garden during this tour in '82, amazing show. Had seen them at the Garden during the Game tour a couple years earlier. I'd have to say one of the best, if not the best, live band ever.
Awesome!
I agree! Best live band I've ever heard. They were incredible!
Freddie changed things because other bands singers like Robert Plant, Ian Gillan, Dio, back then sang to the guitar sound. Freddie sang to the whole music like a story and with the bass it made the changes of the song as was really heavy rock Opera. Nothing like Freddie Yet.
Amen!
i always follow the bass myself. The guitar often leaves you with little to follow, depending on how defined the rhythm is. i can do it, but i prefer the bass as my platform. In any event, Great Point!
Just came across this. Love, love, love Queen! Freddie had the audience in the palm of his hand!
You could be up in the nose-bleed seats ...
but Freddie always let you know he knew you were there!
I love me some Brian May and some of the Red Special!!!!
And some Freddy Mercury
Amen!
Last year I bought myself a Brian May Guitars Red Special!!! What an amazingly built versatile guitar 🎸👍🏼🎵🎶🎼
Freddie oozed charisma. Queen were Princes. That whole band was great. I loved them all. But Freddie was my boy.I still listen.💖💖😎😎😘😘
Freddie Mercury - supreme showman and one of the greatest rock vocalists ever. The crowd were doubly lucky, first to see that gig and second because them missed the Milton Keynes monsoon season.
I was at the Milton Keynes Bowl in 1982 as well, to see Six of the Best (Genesis and Peter Gabriel) and it chucked it down for the 14 hours we were there. It was far too wet and muddy to sit down so we had to stand for 14 hours and then go and dig the car out of a swamp at the end. Still, unique gig, wouldn't have missed it for the world :)
Dam! It's always the way!
I still get goose bumps when Freddy struts out...aaaand...BOOM! Off and running! 💥
Fil. You gotta do a study of David Lindley. He can play ANY stringed instrument, but he warms up.... and it’s amazing
I read (it must’ve been Freddie) say that at the beginning of each concert… “we DEAFEN and BLIND the audience for the first ten minutes, and then we carry on from there!”😄👑
WONDERFFUL! Teamwork by 4 guys who loved making music and perfection! All fun to them thus for us a grand time with them. Loved your insight.
RIP Freddie. we miss you so much
Amen.
Queen simply RULES! I wasn't hugely into them (Had A Night At The Opera) until about a decade ago. I broke my foot, and grabbed their Wembley concert video. Well, my foot only had an ace bandage on it, and when they came tearing out on stage, I jumped up- ouch! Now I have almost all the live dvds; no one can match them live as you said (paraphrasing). Great analysis, Fil- and great fun! ROCK!
Thank you for giving John and Roger credit. There all hot.
Please do more Queen! I'd love to see you do some of their better gigs(Live Aid was a mediocre performance for them) for us! Plus, I've just now found my George Purvis book which breaks down every single song, every single show...from the writing to the production...I don't know if you're a reader, but, if so, definitely try to get your hands on a copy of this book!
I was at this show.. great memories...
Getting the levels right is for sound check so you can pull out all stops first song.
Yeah I guess they wouldn't have the problem of some idiot changing the levels from the sound check! But then some bands do doss around when they get on the stage, even though they've sound checked!
Yes LMAO you busted him
Masterful performers, such a tight band. I am not a huge fan, but I always admire good quality musicianship!
Amen!
最初からバンド全体がハイボルテージでギター掻き鳴らしながらキックステップでステージ前方に飛び出していくブライアンの楽しそうな後ろ姿がたまらん。
Yes they were one that’s why they are still awesome and always have been best bass best drummer best lead guitar best lead singer! Ever still
Another one! Thanks for posting once again an amazing video!Am a huge Queen fan! That's how you do it man!You are a real musician and you have the skills to make comments. That was awesome!Greetings from Italy.Rock on!
Thanks Nick! Will do!
Hot Space Album is one of the most interesting ; It was a new fresh sound in Their artistic creation; Wasn't it ?
Always said as well, Drums and Bass are the bread to the sandwich, guitars and vocals are the filling
Amen!
Sting once said in a video interview that in rock music you need to burn from the word go.
True!
I saw Queen many times late 70s in the UK.. Fantastic yes they was live experts...
Awesome!
Liked that. Don't think I've heard it before.
I remember Roger saying in the Classic Albums: A Night at the Opera video that they always followed the same formula when it came to live shows.
And that was to "Blow them to hell" with a few opening numbers, then take it slow (or even acoustic) for a bit, before building up to the next climax.
So the whole show was really ebb and flow like that. And of course, the last song had to be at least as magnificent as the first.
As for the rhythm section? Yeah, they are underappreciated next to Freddie and Brian. They're more rich and famous than we'll ever be, so I don't feel sorry for them,
but rhythm sections are almost always hidden in the back, aren't they? So it can hurt their professional pride, I suppose.
But then again, Roger doesn't seem to mind. Unlike many other drummers, he's definitely a STAR of the show. And John Deacon, well, he's an introvert, so he's fine... :)
Speaking of Roger. A drummer friend of mine (a trained pro) hates his drumming. He's been going on and on for years about how Roger is always muting the hi-hat
instead of letting it sing, and he will leave the room if I put on a Queen album. I personally have no problem with his playing, but my friend is deadly serious. XD
Haha yeah players listening to other players is sometimes difficult!
A guy came up to me during a break at a gig one time
He said hit your snare drum.
I hit it.
Hit it again.
I was a bit confused but I hit it again.
He sort of hung his head in disappointment and turned away.
I don't hear too well so I wasn't sure what was going on.
The guitarist in my band said. Sit down and play and do that thing with the hi hat that queens drummer does. Roger sometimes eases off the hi hat on the upbeat with the share drum and gives a sort of "pshhhht" sound to the snare.
The fellow in the crowd was delighted. He was wanting a friend of his to take note of how good my snare sounded. It wasnt the snare as much as Rogers technique of putting variable pressure of the hi hat as he plays.
Your friend should see a doctor.
I saw them in Philadelphia Killer Queen tour. Even though we were far back it was still very loud and Freddie Mercury's voice carried absolutely amazing! He loved performing and he loved his fans. Have you ever been to his home? Also have you ever been to David gilmour's old mansion?
No I've never been.
A series of punches from the rhythm section ! 😉
this only makes me miss Freddie more!
Brill review and analysis! Bravo! 👏
Woo, appreciation. 🤘😌
All of the songs from Hot Space are great performed live , although the album guitar solos are also blazing !
Especially Put Out the Fire !
I’ve seen them 8 times, including on that tour, and yes that opener was fantastic!!!! Been a fan since 1974 and in my opinion no one else comes close. ❤️
Classic fm have today published Freddies vocal, with the music stripped away, for We are the Champions, worth a listen.
Four really talented guys in the words of Carly Simon, nobody does it better.
Freddy was a hell of a Showman I got to see them live back in the 80's they were great. Saw them in ft. Worth Texas. Freddy came up out of the floor of the stage with all that fog. It was the best
Awesome!
Agree 👍! Each performance is kinda breathtaking. You know you're in for a great night!
I love all your videos but I really absolutely love when you do queen. Freddie Mercury is so mysterious and itch to see more and more about him. So sad that we can only wonder.
Yeah he went way too soon.
Best band ever!!All Dr.s I believe except for Freddie. Astronomy, Engineering, Dentistry and Freddie.
Yep!
Saw them in 82 in Seattle 4th row in front of Brian. One of the best shows I've ever seen. Freddy's connection with the audience was second to none.
Awesome!
I agree, Queen had like there own genre, no other group could claim such a thing. A combination of great musicians with high level entertainment and energy unsurpassed.
Amen!
I was fortunate enough to see Queen back in the day.....saw them in 1978 in Lakeland Fl........they were just so killer magical....
Awesome!
it was...
Now i'm just seeking out bands i love to see if you've done a video on them! haha! I'd love to hear your thoughts on Queen back in 1975 with their Queen II material! I wish i had a time machine to see Queen back then!
lucky to have seen them, such a powerful band. Then There is Freddy who lets you know he is in charge.
if i could bring one person back it be Freddy, RIP
Would have loved to see this guys live.
Another great performance, very sad for the lost of such a great vocalist!
Amen.
And were u born yet? lol? I remember when they came out...most of the guys I hung with and went to all my concerts with did not like them or Yes bc they said it wasn’t rock??? So I went with a Date...I sat front row with Yes...loved watching Steve Howe...
Cool!
Saw Queen live in the late 70s. Total high energy spectacle! Musically, vocally and visually! Need l say more? Sheer perfection!🎼🎶🎵😎
Looking forward to the next one!
Thanks!
I Love Queen ! Great Video and commentary ! ....thanks
No problem!
Another great video mate 👍Somebody To Love during this gig is phenomenal !!!
Thanks Gav!
excellent analysis mate, queen rocks, forever a fan
Thanks! Amen to that!
I saw Queen in 1986 at Wembley now that was a gig and 1/2 and the start was totally electric - check it :)
Awesome!
Fortunately, they didn't perform Body Language that night. It's too bad John is retired. He's one of my favorite bassist and I'd love to see him working with Fender on a Precision Bass with his specifications.
Phenomenal! They finish the first song like it's the end of the entire concert
Yeah it's awesome!
Fil absolutely right that Queen started their shows at 10 and there was nowhere to go from there but down. The opening number was the highlight of the show.
👍
Woohoo! This is the year i saw them in Kansas City! To date still the loudest show i've attended, but hell man, they owned from pole to pole.
Cool!
This is the tour I saw here in Portland, Oregon. One of the best shows i've seen for sure, but seeing Iron Maiden on the Number of the Beast tour with the Scorpions is still my favorite.
Thanks for the video Fil.
Cheers!
Cool!
Interesting they kept those color moveable lighting rigs off for the first song. I notice on the second song We Will Rock You (fast version) they came on. Notice how low they were set at 0:36 just enough height to clear Brian's hair lol.
Loud and Proud before Freddie came out. Super musicians and performers
Would love to see the famous live clip of Sultans of Swing back in the 80's!
Thanks for the suggestion!
Hmm, I see Brian kicking some cables to free his legs, he he
I saw Queen back in '82 on the Hot Space tour and again last year, both were great shows but the '82 show was obviously better. I've been amazed at how hard Brian and Roger try to keep Queen moving forward. Unfortunately for them, there's no substitute for Freddie Mercury.
John Deacon may have had the right idea... just walk away and call it a day! After all, how are they ever going to match what they were with Freddie?
Yeah it's impossible.
Performance nailed✨
👍
I saw Queen on The Works Tour at Mt Smart Staidium in New Zealand, very very very good concert
Awesome!
I saw that one too in 1985! It was great, but it took ages for the band to take to the stage as they were desperately trying to sober Freddie up because he was monstered on vodka! Brian May was superb as usual and the lighting rig was amazing.
This is so 😎 cool!
So if understood you correctly your fandom can place a suggest in a comment box? Because one of my all time favorite Queen songs is Innuendo. It's so often overlooked, but any time I play it around a guitarist friend they flip out over Brian May. Personally I am in awe of roger Taylor esp at the beginning. Not sure if it's a viable suggestion? But it's an awesome song.
I never have seen this before, and my first reaction was: Wow, any other band would do this at the very end of a concert. I think after this opener, Queen has got the audience by their balls (to say it with Jethro Tull, just hope one can say it this way in english).
Maybe many people have this feeling about it...
Listening to you. I have just scrolled down the recommented videos, I just saw your video about Sonny Landreth, so I have to watch this right now...
They opened with Rock It (Prime Jive) the 2nd time I saw them which was a bit of a change of pace from what I had come to expect but of course after the brief intro it takes off like gangbusters. Of the 3 different opening songs I have seen them do (Jailhouse Rock and The Hero being the others) that one topped them both.
But I think their ultimate show starter is the fast version of WWRY.
👍
I really love your appreciation of the music, its written on your face. Please (begging) do The Who 'Wont Get Fooled Again' at the Pontiac Silverdome, an historic performance!
Thanks for the suggestion!
The Hero...ftom the end credits of the Flash Gordon movie. A great song!
Only saw queen 1 time .
The Game Tour, in Dallas Tx at Reuion Arena . It was in 1982 as well . I was in high school. It was a Amazing show. Unfortunately it was my 1st and last show to see queen . Freddie is my 2nd fav. Singer . Robert Plant is my fav. Fil, review
"Get Down Make Love" Queen has a few vids and live performances of this song or "Dragon Attack" .
Thanks for the suggestion!
Also the lighting and timing of turning them off added to drama.
Cool vids Phil, I keep following through on your links. And thanks for your comment/replies.
No problem Bill!
You're charming and enjoyable! Thank you
Thanks!
Fil...can you do an Uriah Heep analysis with David Byron ....either way...you rock...great job as per usual....ROCK!!
thumbs up for Queen
👍
They always said "First songs are to blind and deaf"
😂
Yeah this gig was one hell of a show from start to finish.
Amen!
Hell yeah!
🤘
Queen came out and gave you their best shot right out of the gate, and then somehow managed to beat their own best shot with each song, Their only competition was themselves.
Amen!
Have you heard Queen sing Somebody to Love.
Yes!
