    Lovely film! Nice to see Timothy Whites and Woolies and a whole host of other locally owned business's. I wish I could go back in time and just stay there. When I look around at our towns and cities today it's heartbreaking.

      Yep, Redcars a dump now, full of junkies and beggars, closed up shops, kebab shops and charity stores, no choice in much of anything, just different prices for the same items, even the gulls look depressed

    So wonderful. My dad had a Wolsey in a deep maroon red colour, walnut dashboard and massive comfortable seats! Our local high street had a butchers, fishmongers, green grocery, sweet shop and post office, chippy, hardware store, off-licence and a shop that sold ribbons 🎀 and materials that my mum used to make dresses 👗 for me! I wish I could truly live back there again and appreciate the beauty

    Road fatalities; 1960 6970, 2010 1850. A reduction of 73% - even though there were 3 times less cars about then. Watching this you can see why!!

    • @marklittler784
      @marklittler784 Před 5 lety +2

      Most of the cars are either stuck in traffic or only doing 5mph through it now though, not to mention more are travelling in cars now and less walking. Cars are better designed now with a safety cell, air bags and compulsory wearing of seat belts front and rear.

    • @gerrywhelan5761
      @gerrywhelan5761 Před 3 lety

      And from the film I can see why, imagine what was then not uncommon, a drunk driver, and what damage he could do with so many walking on the streets.

    • @mxbx307
      @mxbx307 Před 3 lety

      The standard of driving back then was nothing like as high as today, that and old cars were notoriously unsafe and didn't handle well or brake as efficiently. No seatbelts and even if you did have them, wearing them wasn't compulsory.
      They also hadn't invented proper traffic management in those days either - no pedestrianisation, cars just veering all over the road, park where you like, speeding etc. There were also a lot more motorway breakdowns because people just ragged incapable cars until they literally blew up. The speed bump wasn't introduced to British roads until 1983.

      @@mxbx307 I sat into a friends restored Ford Anglia the other day and it scared me even as it wasn't moving, I was thinking as I was looking around its interior that I wouldn't like to crash into even a paper bag in this, a 30mph crash in to anything solid would really hurt in that car and its like at the time!

      It might be the Morris version, which was launched in August 1962. The film isn't clear enough to see if its radiator slats are straight (Morris) or wavy (Austin)!

      This is probably very early in the 1960s because I can't seem to see many - if any - vehicles with the new suffix registration introduced in 1964. The cars and fashions also give off an earlier 60s vibe compared to similar footage I've seen from 1969.
