Dan Hartrman passed away from AIDS several years ago, just FYI. I'm HIV+, and followed Dan's career closely, both with the Edgar Winter Group and solo. He did have a disco hit - "Instant Replay" - which is simply charming. Thanks for delving a little into his work - I appreciate it.

Dan was an amazing singer and performer (look up this one on Letterman) but also write songs for other artists. He actually offered this song to Hall and Oates because they were good friends. It has soul, power, tenderness, sweetness all rolled together. His lead vocals are outstanding. And I love the backup vocals. My favorite line is "Moving sidewalks -- I don't see under my feet". Dan was riding in a limo in NYC, getting around to doing some Christmas shopping, when he noticed that shoppers were hustling and bustling along, yet not really at all enamored with shopping for Christmas, which gave him the idea of this song, which he was in the middle of writing as it already was.
    "Moving sidewalks
I don't see under my feet
Climbing up from down here below
Where the streets see me lonely for you, oh"
It was his way of expressing that Christmas shopping has turned into a chore, not fun anymore, just going through the motions, as having these strong feelings for another and wanting to just be with them instead.
Pretty clever and genius, yet also very relatable with the thoughts and words that he chose for this song, his signature solo song.

Fun movie if you just go into it just looking for fun, not seriousness or importance. That movie also has some scenes with The Blasters which is a band y'all should really check out. They are hard to categorize, but I'd say they have a lot of rockabilly influences, spiced up with some TexMex and punk. 😁 That's as close as I can get on a description. Great song from an underrated artist, who, sadly, left us way too soon, passing from a brain tumor at the age of 43. One of my other favorite Dan Hartman songs is "Get Outta Town" (wayyy more upbeat, Jay!), which was used in the hilarious 80s Chevy Chase movie "Fletch". I think you two would love that film - it's kind of in the vein of Beverly Hills Cop, lots of comedy and some action but with a dramatic story line. Chevy Chase is BRILLIANT in the role. This song also appeared in a movie (soundtrack) called "Streets of Fire," a rock musical also from the 80s.

Dan, who helped produce Edgar Winter on a few of his album, who was a member of the band for many year, and was the bass player on the "Frankenstein" video you reacted to had quite a few hits. His greatest two IMO were his great, classic dance singles "(Vertigo) Relight My Fire" and "Love Sensation" both featuring the great Loletta Holloway.

I really don't remember this song from Dan Hartman. I loved him in the Edgar Winter Group though and a lot of his solo work.
When I was much younger, I used his record "Instant Replay" for my routine when I tried out for a semi-pro football team cheerleader position and ended up on the squad. Those were a fabulous few years for me. Got noticed and even became a model based on it. For that, I'll forever be grateful to Dan Hartman. It was fun at that age. Of course, after a few years, I moved on from that and the superficiality of it all. I had more in mind for my life.

Interesting fact about this song, before Dan Hartman recorded this song he had offered it to Hall & Oats. They declined the song since they had just finished their album and had no more room on the album. They were watching MTV months later and heard the song with Hartman singing it. … said it was one of the best songs they never recorded. LOL

The story goes that a planned music video for this song was made using footage of The Sorels performing it in " Streets of Fire", and it used this version sung by lead singer Winston Ford. When Dan Hartman got wind of this, he put a stop to it, as his contract stipulated that any version released commercially or for promotional purposes had to have his voice on it. Hartman recorded a new vocal for the video that replaced the one recorded by Winston Ford. A new video with Hartman lip-syncing was later made for the song. Winston Ford himself tragically died young at the age of 55 in a car accident in 2007

First time I ever heard him was in the movie Streets of fire way back in the early '80s. That's why you see it on the TV there It's a scene from the film as a back vocal for the band in the film. Awesome song still love it to this day. I hope that you guys also look into other music films on your other channel streets of fire are being one of them. But also my favorite music film was Eddie and the cruisers one and two. With the background singing done by John cafferty and The Brown Beaver band. You guys should react to their music as well. Much love to you and your family and all the Rob squad family is well

What confuses many people with this song is that if you watch the movie it's in, the group singing it is black. They Lip synced it. I myself was like what?? when I first saw Dan sing this because I saw the movie before I saw the video. The soulful voice as you describe it crossed over well to make you believe the group was really singing. copy/paste ... "I Can Dream About You [Official Music Video] The Sorels (Dan Hartman)" , and see the group perform the song. Good movie too!

SO happy for this! My first experience with this song was the MTV video...from the movie...my high school had a talent show each year, and they did a Lip Sync segment, because it was big at the time. I came up with a performance....I "lipped" lead, and actually did a good moonwalk...based on the video. Got a ton of kudos. But always love the song as well.
