A great upbeat song. Hartman wrote this for the 1984 movie Streets of Fire, where it was performed by the fictional group The Sorels, with the actor Stoney Jackson playing their lead singer, Bird (they do a sweet moonwalk at the line "moving sidewalks" when they perform it in the movie). The real voice behind the version used in the film was Winston Ford, but Hartman's version was the one used on the soundtrack and released as a single. The song also appeared on Hartman's album I Can Dream About You

Dan did a lot of production for that band and for Edgar's brother, Johnny. Dan later went on to do one of, if not my favorite dance songs "Relight My Fire" which was a huge hit, along with "Love Sensation" which he wrote and produced for the great singer Loletta Holloway. Both of which I far prefer to this, although good, cut.

There is a kick-ass killer live video of the Edgar Winter band playing the song Free Ride... Cuz every time Dan opens the song playing the six string electric guitar and then as it kicks in he switches over to a four string bass guitar and sings the lead vocal. The guitar he's playing is a double neck so six string guitar and a 4-string bass but it's amazing to watch. And his vocals were great.

This song was written and performed by Dan Hartman. It was written for a movie called "Streets of Fire:(1984) and the music video was made not only tto promote the song but the movie as well..The clips of the singing group singing and dancing on stage are actual clips from the film."Streets of Fire" . The movie was trying to capitalize on the music video craze at the time made popular by music channels such MTV(which was 3 years old at the time) and VH-1. Movie studios used music videos to help market and promote their movies. I don't think this is the original music video of this song. I think this particular video was remade in the early 90s but they still used clips from the movie.

The story goes that a planned music video for this song was made using footage of The Sorels performing it in " Streets of Fire", and it used this version sung by lead singer Winston Ford. When Dan Hartman got wind of this, he put a stop to it, as his contract stipulated that any version released commercially or for promotional purposes had to have his voice on it. Hartman recorded a new vocal for the video that replaced the one recorded by Winston Ford. A new video with Hartman lip-syncing was later made for the song. The talented artist Winston Ford himself tragically died young at the age of 55 in a car accident in 2007

This song is from the 1984 movie Streets of Fire. A great movie to add to your movie watching list. It stars Michael Paré who also stars in a musical movie Eddie and the Cruisers 1983.

You're not alone Asia! The other video that was shown on MTV was just the act from the movie. Many folks (me included), thought the group sang this song. I was shocked when I found out it was a white guy!

Even though everyone knew Dan Hartman sang the song, not many people really knew what he looked like. Matter of fact, when the song's video debuted on MTV in the mid 80s, they showed the movie with the black group performing the song and everyone, including myself, thought that they were the actual artist. I bet a lot of people never knew it was a white guy that sang it. I didn't know for years!

Asia, BJ, this is from a movie, Streets of Fire, Diane Laine, Willem Dafoe(from Platoon, Spider Man, he's goblin),...Michael Pare`(Philadelphia Experiment, Bad Moon),..the scene of the performers on stage, is from the movie, Diane Lane(think she was lip syncing?), comes out singing too, just before the villainous Dafoe crashes the scene, it's not the best movie, but the soundtrack is awesome, Sorcerer, a song written by Stevie Nicks is on there, Marilyn Martin sings it, but I like Stevie singing it more,..so love in the 80's, there was a lot of throw back to the way, the style of the "doo wap" days of music, and you see here the group on stage(Robert Townsend, believe he's the one on the end dancing, didn't know who he was at the time, then he started doing this crazy show on HBO, too funny, plus a crazy movie he single handedly financed off of credit cards to make, Hollywood wouldn't finance it, you know I guess when he pitched to them,.Hollywood Shuffle,..you never know when you see someone just starting out, how or when they're gonna blow up, he just had this small role, doing a dance routine in a movie 🎬)..dancing, fantastic dance moves, like the Temptations, The Spinners,..and that wonderful song by Dan, it hit the charts, did better than the movie it was featured in, ..and when I saw the movie, that concert scene to me was the height of the movie,..do keep going, check out The whole soundtrack,..check out Tonight Is What It Means To Be Young,..Rory Dodd Holly Sherwood,...Godspeed, Peace ✌

The white dude is the real singer, but the scene of the black singers is from a movie called "Streets of Fire" where it's the black singers singing the song. You should check out the movie. It has a lot of music in it and action as well. The black singers are actors: Robert Townsend, Stoney Jackson, and Mykelti Williamson. You might know Mykelti from "Forrest Gump."
